Maybe it's because I quit following recruiting about a decade ago, but I found this article really helpful. It pulled together the bits and pieces that I had a sense of (but wasn't fully grasping) quite nicely. Thanks Stuart!
 
He has a couple of points wrong. First the 25 initial counters rule has been waived for this year and next year. Previously all transfers and high school recruits would count toward the 25 limit. Second the rule regarding continuing of athletic related aid not counting toward the 85 limit is 15.5.1.8 and basically says that if you played under the old coach you can remain on scholarship if you don't participate under the new coach and not count toward the 85 limit, but if you do participate anytime after the new coach takes over than all years count to the 85. This rule does not allow a coach to take a kid off of scholarship, but it would allow them to tell the player that they won't be playing or participating in team activities, but they will stay on scholarship if they chose to remain at the school.
