"According to research by the CU sports information staff, CU ranked eighth nationally in kickoff coverage, 40th in punt coverage and 25th in kickoff returns over the final nine games of the 2013 season."

Interesting. I did a YoY statistical comparison of all 3 phases of the game and posted it here on Allbuffs - ST showed no improvement. However, there appears to be some masked data, because if you back out the first 3 games, it appears we did improve quite a bit. Now with Lindsay at KR, I expect some real excitement on kickoff.

Go Buffs!

Crazy that the ST stats look good when you only look at our Pac-12 games from last season. Need to be strong in the opener this year.

Better be seeking a strong start this year. Dude got clinic'ed by CSU last year.

i can't handle more special team gaffes, man. it has been years since we've seen even mildly competent unit play.

where is the riddler now? i hope he's got a backup career lined up.

If you take out awful games, he is a great coach.

BTW, that KR yardage stat is very misleading.

Kind of like when AZ analyzed last year by taking out the games Embree got blown out in and take away the ones MacIntyre won there was no progress year to year.

Hmmm. No one on this site would do that ever!

We almost won at Texas 7 years ago if you don't count pick 6s and PRs that go for tds.

at the least, special teams improved despite harder competition as the year went on. That's a good sign.

I agree that selective statistics are bunk. For instance, I always have a huge problem when people say things like, "If you take out those two 60-yard touchdown runs, he averaged under 4 yards per carry today."

But in defense on this one with STs, the Buffs played against better competition in the final 9 games than in the first 3. Also, it points to improvement over the course of the season. It could be random that the stinker ST games just happened to occur in games that were in the first quarter of the season, but I doubt that.

Also, while I'd say that STs are almost always at their worst at the beginning of the year and that everyone improves... the fact that we're talking about ranks takes that out of the equation since it's relative to the rest of D1. Most everyone may have improved over the last 3/4 of the year, but the Buffs improved more.

We'll find out on Friday whether it's a legitimate long-term turning of a corner.

Didn't we try to use a lot of walk-ons/non-starters on ST the first couple of weeks and then figured out we had to use starters.

The facts are there for everybody to see. In Embree's first year, he had a better conference record than MacIntyre did in his first year. Those are undeniable facts.

Special teams does seem to be a point of emphasis for this staff. It did appear (to me, at least) that there was some improvement in this area last year as the year went on. It would be hard to not improve after the disaster of the first game. Nevertheless, a passable special teams would be an upgrade over what we've had since Mason Crosby was here. We can't be starting all of our drives at our own 15 yard line, and we can't be allowing our opponents to start all their drives at their 40.

I get the feeling that there is a dislike of Neinas. I assume that dislike stems from the fact that his dad was involved in hiring Hawkins and a perception that he pulled strings to get his son this job. If that is true, I think it is unfair.

Block some kicks, have great coverage and get some returns this year and Toby will be loved.

Bottom line business.

P.S. I don't think the family connection is at the base of this. He's got good connects in Colorado and with the specialist gurus like Sailer. The issue is that it was the last staff addition and many believed that we needed a RB coach who was also an ace recruiter. Since HCMM went with a ST Coordinator who doesn't coach a position and doesn't have a rep as a P5 recruiter, then that decision is open to question... especially when we saw a decline in the team's statistical ST rankings last season and the ST performance almost cost us the CSU game.

I get your dry humor, but for those who don't: I dislike anyone who is incompetent and is not qualified to do a job. Neinas didn't have the experience to get this job, has proven he doesn't know how to recruit, coach, or make necessary changes in a game. The fact that he was probably brought here through nepotism is just embarrassing. If his dad got him the job and he was GOOD, then nobody would care. But there lies the rub.

I am going to guess CU wishes this particular puff piece had not been written. Neinas is a joke. One that only his Dad finds funny.

O'Neill was great. I just can't believe how bad our kick return team and kick coverage teams still are. We hardly ever look like we have a remote chance at breaking one, and the other team almost always looks like they might.
