CU gets a positive mention in article on realignment

Jason King. article is linked on the yahoo NCAAB home page with a pic of Boyle, and some unclever pun on CU being a "tad" better. but, beats getting your 20 win team ripped by Gregg Doyel for a month....and we've been there.

PAC-12

(Added Colorado and Utah)

The good: There don’t seem to be very many positives about the revamped Pac-12 – at least not in terms of basketball. But Colorado will benefit from this move immensely. Tad Boyle, who recently completed his first season in Boulder, has the Buffaloes headed in a good direction and is clearly the right man for this job. He’ll have a much easier time building fan interest and confidence among his players in the Pac-12, where wins will be a bit easier to come by for the next few years.

The bad: Mainly because it lost some of its top stars early to the NBA draft, the former Pac-10 has been the worst of the six power conferences in recent years – and it doesn’t look like it’s going to get much better anytime soon, as some of last season’s top stars (Derrick Williams, Klay Thompson and Isaiah Thomas) are turning pro. Adding Colorado and Utah to the league certainly doesn’t do much for the conference in terms of basketball. If anything their presence waters down an already mediocre league. Utah has struggled in recent years and just made a coaching change. Even though Colorado appears to be on an upswing, the Buffaloes are a long way from becoming a household name.

Well done article.

Definitely sees Colorado as being on the rise. But it's realistic. Until we become a consistent winner and regularly go to the Dance, we do bring the overall prestige of the Pac-12 down in hoops.

Well stated Buffnik and Ronson...CU is on the upswing but the prestige isn't there. We have a serious opportunity to have more than football to offer in terms of prestige.

next year is so important for growing CU hoops. we won't be great, but 18 wins and .500 in the new conference would go forever as far as bridging support in the future for CU hoops. college hoops is such a great game in person and i think we have some fans who are starting to discover the CEC ain't so bad. sightlines are good, not a bad seat in the house, gets loud. the band does a great job, students are showing up more and more. a lot of sports value for your $$$ there. they still skimp you on jalapenos for your nachos but you ask for more and beer and a legit OOC would be nice.

if Alec can make some splash in the NBA, CU's name will be out there....with him and Chauncey.

This is a fair expectation for next year. No?

i probably put the o/u at slightly less than 18 wins. we lose so much scoring and will need to step it up on the D end (and were not a great D club last year, imo....way too many easy buckets....@ISU comes to mind). not sure we've got the 80+ ppg or the 50 point 2nd half we could rely on last year to sometimes offset poor D. Carlon Brown giving us 15+ a game would be a nice start. losing the money 3 we got from Levi will be tough to replace.

20 wins should be the goal for the Buffs in the Pac-12. It's not like asking for 25-30 wins per season from powerhouse programs but that should be our expectations for CU basketball.

agreed. Given our OOC alone this should happen. Boyle seems intent on playing as many OOC games at home as possible. This means we should be using our Home Court advantage. 20 wins is the goal. Anything less than 18 will be seen as a bad season. From being in the band and being in the student section during tournament time, I can see that the support is definitely growing. The students love to watch this style of Bball. Brown, even without playing has become somewhat of a fan favorite. Roberson is a growing star on this team. and eveyone love Ben Mills. There is plenty to get excited for this basketball season. I am glad to see Buff fans coming out of the gloom and doom stance that was prevalent since the end of the NIT.

S2S - I think you got it right. I want 18 to be the baseline going forward. Winning season, but kind of mediocre. That would be the type of rebuilding year I could be very happy with as a Buff hoops fan.

Now, speaking of which, looks like no signing anyone for us the rest of this year?

How many non conference games do we have? Looking at the conference schedule we should be hitting around 12-13 with just that alone. We play nine home games and there are only 3 games I can see us losing. Washington, Arizona, and Cal. Cal is not likely but they, to me seem much like UCLA, it only takes one class kind of thing. The other home games should be wins. So thats 8 wins right there. Add on to that 4-5 wins on the road, and we dont have to do great in our OOC schedule to hit 20. I think this team is going to reload and not rebuild as much as people are expecting. We have two top 150 recruits. One JUCO transfer that if he plays anything like he did in HS will replace Burks + an inch. Brown should be ready to go and will easily bring some experience and some talent to the bench.

Don't you ever denigrate Burks again. That is an insane statement. Burks is one of the top 3 players in the last 20 years for CU, easy. Maybe ever. We cannot, repeat, CANNOT, replace Burks with one player.

I agree burks is a star, had insane talent, and will not be easily replaced. However if this kid comes in and plays the type of game he is capable of then he will replace the offensive production that Burks gave. No one will ever replace Burks as a person and a player, that will be proven when his number hangs in our gym. But the production that Burks had can be replicated by this guy.

again, that is an insane statement even in a best case scenario for a guy who was not a star at A&M and transferred out...

Its all about the system. Burks did what he did this year because of not only talent, but the system. The way Tad plays BBall allows players with the ability to score to do that. This JUCO kid has that ability.

ya, cause Burks really sucked in the completely different system we ran in his frosh year...

From a numbers standpoint, we'll probably score about as many points. Those will come from somewhere, so in a way we'll replace Alec's production. But there's so much more to it than that. His offensive efficiency was through the roof, largely due to his ability to draw fouls and make his free throws. Another guy who was efficient as hell was Levi. I don't worry so much about replacing their points, but can we get those points with as few shots taken? Gonna be damn tough. And I highly doubt that anyone on the roster will be able to completely take over a game like Alec did at times when nothing else was working within the flow of the offense.

an eloquent and well thought out :stupid: to my post :smile2:

Hopefully everyone is in the gym shooting FT's... because we will need all the points we can get. Losing Higgins, Burks, Levi (our top 3 FT shooters) will hurt. Unfortunately, I think we take a step back in that regard and it will probably cost us 2 games next year. I hope I'm wrong though!!

You think we'll only go 28-2 due to our FT shooting? :wink2:
