BOULDER — John Stearns, a legend on the baseball diamond and football gridiron for the University of Colorado in the early 1970s, passed away Thursday in Denver after a courageous fight against stage IV cancer. He was 71.

I met him at the Living Legends banquet and events in 2021. There was no indication he was ill. Did not hear anybody mention it. He was on the field for the 1971 team celebration, and I was shocked at how thin he looked. RIP Bad Dude.
 
He was the catcher when my cousin pitched for the Mets. Stearns was my favorite player on the team. Sad day.
