CU-Nebraska... It's a Rivalry, Huskers

I am always fairly astonished when Cornhusker fans get dismissive when discussing the extent to which the CU-Nebraska series is a rivalry, as if the question bears on the perception of their storied program.

Over the years, the general sentiment from Husker fans is that the CU-NU Rivalry is one perpetuated by CU fans only, and started by Coach Mac. Nebraska fans kind of went on a "candidate search" this year for a rival, trying to latch onto (recently successful) Missouri, when it became obvious that their rivalry with Oklahoma is not only a) on a serious wane, but b) not a rivalry with Sooner fans, who consider Texas and Okie State their rivals.

Here are some of my own reasons why this is a rivalry:

-Tom Osborne interviewed for and nearly taking the Colorado head coaching position (eventually taken by Fairbanks) after nearly being run out of Lincoln
-Coach Mac circling Nebraska in red letters - then winning a MNC before Osborne, forcing Osborne to mimic CU's recruiting
-"Sal is Dead, Go Big Red" bumper stickers, signs, graffiti, etc. Umm, that's vitriol reserved for your worst enemy
-Colorado driving a stake into the heart of Nebraska's dynasty: 62-36
-Nebraska edging CU into the BCS game in 2001 by .05 pts

Don;t take my word for it Bugeaters: The Sporting News recently ranked the top 20 college football rivalries, and CU-Nebraska came in at #15.

I've rarely ever heard anyone say that we're not a rivaly? I think it's common knowledge?

And hey...IT says we are in NCAA 09...that's when I bring in my recruits to see the slaughter!
 
It is just another game, all it means is the Puffs will stay home and have a nice white Christmas this year.
 
I've witnessed nu fans tearing down their own goal posts after beating CU.

It takes a lot to get those red-polyester-clad cadavers to spend that kind of energy.
 
I do look at CU as Nebraska's rival....but to be fair

I don't think it was CU driving the stake into the heart of the Nebraska Dynasty...CU did play a great game but I don't think that one CU win against Nebraska is "driving the stake"

The Stake was driven by Steve Pederson when he fired Frank Solich after a
9-3 record...because then we got Callahan.

Just a husker point of view :thumbsup:
 
I think it is a rivalry by default. It really doesn't have the passion and history of great rivalries (Mich vs OSU, OU vs Tex, etc). Everyone knows the true rivalry for us was Nebraska/Oklahoma. Maybe in 20 years; if both programs play at an elite level and they keep the game on Thanksgiving weekend, the intensity of the rivalry can be compared to some of the others.

Fair points. I remember the discussions - when the Big 12 was being formed -about moving the NU/KSU game to Thanksgiving weekend to replace the NU/OU game. Would that move have made NU/KSU a rivalry? Not really.

You are correct in that both teams need to play at an elite level over an extended period of time, and have each game be for the Big 12 North title (and, occasionally, much more), for a deep seeded rivalry to emerge.

Still, if you look at the Buffzone comment area, there have been NU trollers there all season. Other than a few Longhorn fans who hit the site the week of the CU/Texas game, and a few CSU fans before the opener, there has been little interaction from any other tream's fans.

At least those posters see a rival in CU!

1992? That was in the heart of our rivalry. We both came in ranked #7 I believe and CU left with their tails between their legs. FYI: That was the last time that the field was rushed and the posts taken down in Lincoln.
 
I would say the rivalry peaked in 1994, when CU was #2, NU was #3 and the Husker win in Lincoln catapulted Nebraska to #1, where they finished (CU finished 3rd). I've always felt that the 1994 CU team was the best ever assembled in Boulder, and would have beaten many, many of the great teams of all time (easily comparable to Nebraska's fabled 1995 team). But the 90's solidified the rivalry, as nearly every game was extremely close and involved top 10 teams, and whoever lost was knocked out of the NC race as a result of the game.

The 2001 game brought it back to that level, as the teams were #2 (NU) and #3 (CU) in the BCS poll going into the bowl season.

Even in "off" years though, something is almost always on the line, such as this year and the Buff's bowl hopes (sometimes a head coach's job has on the line...).

That was the one. Ouch! I talked a lot going into the stadium, and a lot of folks remembered. Painful, painful spanking. Ended up having a great time anyway!

in 2001 NU was #1 in the BCS poll and CU was right around #15, before the game.

but you're right....going into the bowl season, it was #2 and #3

I've never saw the big deal with teh crying kid thing...the OU one either...he's a little freakin kid...they cry about everything. And he's probly not even crying about the game, probly wants a new batman action figure or some **** or he's tired and wants to go home

Interviewed later, the kid revealed that he was crying about Eric Crouch, his hero, being sacked. He did not pay attention to the score (neither did I .. :huh:).

Ummmm what? Is that why all of the husker fans talk so boldly on Allbuffs. When the clock ticked zero, the last time CU/nu shared the same turf, the score favored The Buffs. Typically that gives the winning team bragging rights until circumstances change.

Score be damned...we're big red!

That firing has to be one of the biggest mistakes Nebraska ever made. They stabbed a guy who was loyal right in the back, and the program has never recovered. I guess this is a rivalry, but both programs are nothing compared to what they used to be. It's just 2 midiocre programs slugging it out.

Mistakes are made in all programs from time to time, thats for sure. But it was no mistake to fire Solich, there was probably more going on there then meets the eye.

Both programs, CU and NU, are making strides to be back to a much higher level. We will see results next year.

I was aware of something more important than the score.. I am in the habit of watching the lines battle, the pit, the D line and the O line of each team battling it out each play..

In that game I was amazed at the job the Buffs were doing on offense against our D line (as well as against our linebackers and secondary too). The holes could have accomodated automobiles, not just your running backs.

And it went on nearly throughout the entire game.

To me, that was your big victory; busting up the blackshirts real good.

The score was pretty sick for a Husker fan, too (worse ones were to come 70 - 10, etc).
 
Good point DBT, when these two teams are playing at the top level again it's going to be fun to watch. I think this is a rivalry, but again it doesn't really matter what I think. I just know our teams want nothing more than to kill one another when they get on the field. All the pieces are in place, to me anyways, to call this one a rivalry.

As I remember the game, (and sadly, in my exhuberance I reached a state of intoxication which impaired my capacity to do so) the linebackers took themselves out of the play--the O-line didn't need to. We ran that counter again and again, and while I agree that the O-line dominated nebraska's D-line, the linebackers appeared to take the bait and push their momentum in the opposite direction of the play, and ultimately failed to fill the gaps.

But still, my favorite part of the game was definitely the score!

excellent stroll... needs a conclusion. You sort of ended with episode 2, "the Huskers strike back". I do believe that episode is followed by a game in 2001 in which "The return of the Buffaloes" is pretty emphatic :smile2:. After that its been a stalemate into mediocrity...
