CU Offense vs. CU Defense in 2013

I know it is way too early to judging our potential this year but based on the last scrimmage I am left thinking that maybe our offense will be close to average rather than last in Div. 1. But I am also left thinking that our defense is really as bad as we were last year and am not sure we have the right staff to turn it around.

I know, I know we can't judge next season on the basis of 1 spring scrimmage but I believe that usually early on in spring and fall scrimmage the defense usually wins the battles until the offense starts clicking.

Anyones else now cautiously optimistic that our offense may actually be able to put points on the board but that they will rarely be able to match the points opposing teams put on our defense?
 
If we can get consistent QB play from Wood or whomever else is starting I think we'll have a good offense. Another key is our OL needs to stay healthy. Any injuries and we may be ****ed.
 
The offense needs to find a way to stay on the field. Three and outs just kill your defense.

It has been years since the offense has averaged 20 points a game. As we have seen scoring 14 points a game just won't cut the mustard.

I'm not holding out a lot of hope the defense is going to be better than last year but if the offense is better than we are going to be a better team.

There's really no way the defense won't be a little improved. When you finish at the bottom you've got no where to go but up.
 
Don't read too much into those scrimmage results. What happened is what's supposed to happen when the QB doesn't have to worry about getting hit. I'm encouraged by the fact that we are where we are supposed to be.

What do you mean by good? Top half of the conference good?

I agree with Nik. These guys look like All-Americans in the 7 on 7 that I watched last week. In scrimmage without QBs being live, they look pretty good. And I'm pretty sure I was saying this last spring. Live Bullets make a big difference. I'd expect the defense to "catch up" on Saturday if they go live with the QBs.

Relatively good compared to the past three years or so, which I know isn't saying much. I'm thinking 7th in the conference, 6th if Wood is above average and we stay healthy on the OL and PRich.
 
The defense is much further away IMO. Even with a lot of improvement, we could still end up with the worst defense in the conference.
 
Sorry guys but name the teams we will finish above. Do you really think the Pirate will have a bad offense this year? **** no. Oregon state just plays solid football. Arizona state is getting good. Zona has Richrod. Utah has a young stud who's accomplished at QB. I just don't see it.
 
The only conference teams that should feel really confident on offense: Zona, ASU, Oregon, and UCLA. Every other team has pretty major question marks.

  8. Utah 26.7 ppg
  9. Washington - 24.0 ppg
  10. California - 23.0 ppg
  11. Washington State - 20.4 ppg
  12. Colorado - 17.8 ppg

  • San Jose State - well ESPN sucks and won't work for me right now.

I see us, WSU, Cal, Utah, and UW fighting for the 8-12 spots for offense. So I'll change my prediction to 8th and 7th if Wood is above average. I really think JT and PRich are going to go HAM this year in this offense.
 
Like I said in another post - I would (wood) much rather have our offense go apes#!t against our crappy defense (2013) than not be able to move 200 yards against our crappy defense (2006-20012).

Totally 1000% agree. We haven't seen that kind of production in spring practices in forever. And our D was crap the past several years and I doubt it is going to be worse than last year. Of course maybe they are also just having difficulties picking up the new schemes, etc.

Should be interesting how much the D improves and how close to a repeat on O we can get in our final scrimmage.

I'll believe it when I see it. The way I see it there's only 2 teams we could barely beat. Utah and Cal. I only put cal there because they have a HC who's in his first year there. But hey guess what! Cal has 10 times as much talent and speed then we do.

Right

The only thing I'm confident in right now is our RB situation should be solid.. unless Tony Jones is out there. Hopefully he learned how to pass block. I'm a huge fan of Powell and Ford. Abron started to win me over late in the year too.

We just don't match up on either side with the talent level in the conference. We match Utah, but they have had less attrition, the same staff stability (which isn't necessarily a big plus, but it's been better than the last 5 years here for sure) which gives them some benefit of "learning".

I would pick us a solid 12th on both sides but could possibly see an improvement to 10th!

It's also a hell of a lot easier for Utah to plug holes with juco guys from Snow C.C

Not so much from where we were. If we were already over 20 ppg, I'd say it's HUGE. But coming from under 20? Now we're just talking about being a regular college offense. That's not a lot to ask.
 
Erickson working with Johnson as OC has disaster written all over it. I'm not sure how hot Whittingham's seat is, but after another OC hiring fail it'll be pretty damn hot after this season.
 
Our talent at WR is impressive, to me at least. With the right type of offensive planning we could be a high scoring team.

The secondary is a problem. What ever we score we give it right back up.
 
At this stage I am prepared to go on record with a prediction that our offense will not be 12th in the Pac 12 this year. I think the system is better, the coaches are better, and we have upgraded talent in key positions. And I don't think we have ever seen that kind of production in a scrimmage in terms of big plays and passing efficiency.

The defense however could be as bad as it was last year. That could equal only 2 more wins this year but fewer blowouts.
 
I have always been the ultimate glass half full guy until now. This time they are going to have to show me. So I feel very confident in saying 100% without reservation we will take the field and play offense next fall, beyond that I will withold judgment.
