CU passes (for now) on full stadium Wi-Fi or DAS at Folsom

According to school officials, there is no full-stadium, fan-facing Wi-Fi or cellular distributed antenna system (DAS) network in Folsom Field, and no plans to bring either to the venue anytime soon.

Instead, most fans at the on-campus stadium will rely on one of two nearby macro sites, one each from top wireless carriers AT&T and Verizon Wireless. According to Jeff Lipton, director of real estate for CU, the school decided to pass on bringing Wi-Fi or DAS to Folsom for a number of reasons, including the cost of the systems, the infrequent use of the facility, and potential loss of network control to prospective suppliers.
Hard to justify cost of connectivity for lightly used venue

“Nationally, stadiums are challenging” when it comes to cost justifications for installing wireless networks, Lipton said in a recent phone interview. While Lipton claimed that CU “hasn’t been sleeping on this,” saying the school has been reviewing wireless stadium options for several years, he added that CU had concluded that a cellular DAS wasn’t a good fit for Folsom, which has been the home of CU football since 1924.

I do agree that there are other priorities for investment such as an audio system and other stadium upgrade. Especially in consideration that it's likely that new technologies might bring the cost of Wi-Fi/DAS down into a cost effective range in the near future.

But, man, as someone who doesn't have to write the checks it's simply frustrating that it's so hard to send a text from inside Folsom or Coors.

The same issue at USC and LA Rams games. I can't access anything using Data in the stadium. You would think they would be able to afford it too, but maybe it's just not a priority.

I'm sick of people yelling at me to sit down when I stand on the bleacher and hold my cell phone up in the air.

Stadium priorities:
1. New audio system
2. Bathroom upgrades
3. Chairbacks for every seat not in the student section
4. Wifi and cellphone access (I think this is actually a big one given that students are always sending texts and snapchatting throughout the game).
5. Better concessions

This year I haven't had the urge to checkout scores of other games. Texting would be nice but I haven't had too much trouble

I was a little frustrated this weekend trying to get access. I realized that my DVR needed to be extended to cover the whole game and I couldn't get the damn signal. Funny how the article says that there is a Verizon tower there, I have Verizon and was consistently denied.

Amazing how fast I became attached to the instant gratification of wireless internet access.

Wifi would be nice. I have found that I'm watching the scoreboard more this year because of the relevance of the Buffs. But it's not a huge deal, IMO.

I didn't notice #1 as a problem at the ASU game but the rest of items on your list were obvious. It would be nice if they just had more concessions as gettimg in line at the begining of halftime took the entire halftime to get the food. Oh yeah, I bought what was advertised as pizza but when I opened the box at my seat I found some sort of microwaved product that must have come from a gas station.

Data is atrocious at Folsom, can't load a whole lot. I don't usually care but I like to sometimes check stats and opposing scores.

Fify???

boooooo.
So stupid that the DAS/WiFi is being looked at from a stadium/athletic department perspective.

The entire CU Boulder campus should have crazy fast wireless service in every dorm room, study hall, classroom, cafeteria and public space from Sewall to Kittredge. From Old Main to the C4C. From Will Vill to Wardenburg.

High speed WiFi and cellular access is the new oxygen. Skimping on connectivity is as backwards as avoiding indoor plumbing.

Doing nothing means my cell phone battery dies faster, and my ability to share the magic of Folsom is just not a priority.

Buy my products, says the guy who works in the telecommunications industry...

Can't you get us a deal on a system? I don't know what DAS stands for but I assumed that the S stood for Skid. Am I wrong?

I think they do. However I also think they throttle that wifi. Think about the demand 20,000 or students can put on band width while they live stream their own narcissistic stupidity or watch someone elses.
