CU student section vs. CSU

I know it is very late and I promise you despite the rough loss somehow I am completely sober. I've made the mistake of going through twitter and noticed Terran's tweet (he posted here while being recruited right?) about the fans giving up on the team even though we had the lead. I was going to respond on twitter but 140 characters I didn't think did justice and was going to sleep on it, but I got to let it out. He is mostly right. The Student Section did give up, but that was before the game even began. I can't talk on behalf of the alumni sections, but the student section tonight was as pathetic as I have seen for a CSU game in my three years.

Why is this? I think there are a couple reasons. We have been so bad for so long that football has turned into a "joke" to the students going. The negativity was unbelievable. I heard a bunch of comments like "I am just here to drink" or "we even have a football team?". The drinking part is just the nature of college. I understand that. I like to have a couple beers before a game, but not enough that I am just tanked and don't even care about the game. That is what our student section has turned into. The majority of the section was tanked and just complacent. It was like a Rockies game. People were there to be with friends and drink and didn't give a **** about the game. This is disturbing to me. I am not sure how we get out of this mentality without a better product on the field and it sucks. I grew up going to CU games as a little kid and could not wait to be in the student section. They are always the loudest and most into the game. This is not the case anymore, but the opposite. I am at a loss of words.

Another issue I believe is the CSU game as a whole. Our student culture now is entitled. We saw this at the Kansas ticket fiasco last year. We as a student body believe we get what we want when we want it. Like most of us here, we feel superior to CSU and I honestly feel like we just assumed we would demolish them. The second things went south, people just stopped watching and socialized. I have a couple of my best friends on the football team and the second I got back I apologized on behalf of our student section. These guys work their ass off and can't wait to get in front of 50000 fans cheering them on. Instead they have fans that really don't care what happens and almost seem to disrespect the team to an extent to where it seems like we could be the enemies. It is late so I am sorry if this is jumbled up, but to Terran and the entire football team I apologize on behalf of the student section. You deserve better, but I am honestly not sure if it will get better in the near future.

tough call. Business is business, and like Monfort said, if you don't like it "don't go." CU Football is a joke, and the students will get into it as soon as the team gives them something to get into. We can make fun of fair weather fans all we want, but it is hard to blame a bunch of kids that know nothing less than Buffs failures to not give a **** and act like it.

I agree with that, but what irked me was how amped the CSU students were. I know they just beat us, but I really do not think that the product on the field CSU is putting out there is that substantially better than ours, yet their fans were substantially better than ours or at least the student section was.

I had at least a dozen CSU fans scream **** you at me. Their entire fan base was fired up last night and so was their team. I guess CU fans and the team just showed up and went through the motions.

the cu fans and defense went through the motions!

I'm not blaming them, but our student section sucked last night. Period. The CSU student section actually gave a **** about the game. Sad.

Let's remember that this isn't totally on the students. CSU plays this game up, big time. Our students are looking for reasons to be disinterested in football. But more importantly, Rick George did everything in his power to NOT pump this game. No marketing, nothing to get students excited. It doesn't surprise me in the least that the students and CU fans were lethargic.

Excellent point. I was actually thinking that, but too lazy to make more than one observation in the post.

There wasn't a peep out of CSU's side for 3.5 quarters

That's a complete load of ****. I was on CU's side near their student section, and me and my friend had trouble hearing each other all game because of those ****ing CSU students.

I was on the 20(toward the north endzone) behind the CU bench and the CSU fans were very loud.

This, CSU students were actually into the game, every time I looked over at CU's. Nothing just a bunch of drunk, high students who didn't give a damn about the game. Did they even do a cheer? Never heard them making noise when on defense, hell CSU makes noise on offense as stupid as they are but at least they do something.

Its the same every year at this game. The huge video board is opposite the CSU student section and above and behind the CU students. The video clips that alternate back and forth between student sections get them foaming at the mouth. CU students have forgotten how to cheer, how important that is for the team

Very quiet for as many students were there on the CU end...it was pretty full. My son and I did our part when we could (even standing at times, a lost concept) but this game has this weird vibe. When we are up it is always a nervous thing awaiting a collapse (didn't we all know it was coming after settling for that FG?) and when we fall behind it's even worse.

It's difficult to be loud and excited about ****ty football and getting your **** stomped in by a MWC team.

Give the students something to cheer about.

We were up 17-7 at one point. What more do they need? The students were embarrassing last night.

The team was not good enough last night, don't get me wrong. However the students need to step up their game. The players feed off that energy and it wasn't there.

Sounds like CU students are pretty apathetic toward football and it doesn't help with having so many out of state kids from Cali. Granted the program has been in the gutter for the past 8 years but football has never been a big part of the culture at CU. I was very surprised to hear when Sacky was saying in a thread a year or 2 back how the administration does very little if anything to promote student excitement for football.

Of course all of those rabid supporters will be up at Hughes to support their team against UC Davis and Tulsa. That is why I hate CSU fan. Win or lose they abandon their team after their Super Bowl, yet they love to crow about their game against the Buffs. 3 weeks from now, I'll ask them what they thought of CSU's game over the weekend, and I'll get a blank stare.

To be fair to the students, I wasn't getting into it either after the last five minutes of the second quarter. None of the CU non student fans were. We were in "here we go again" mode.

Are you guys seriously blaming the students for not being into the game? Most of them have never seen an even average quality CU team in their lives, how can you expect them to be passionate about the team? How passionate are the fans of Northern Idaho State?

Doesn't excuse how bad we (they) were

No, actually it does... watch "The Waterboy" for an example of what happens to a team's fanbase when the team sucks for an extended period of time. Also, for an example of what happens to the fanbase, when the team stops sucking

None of that excuses the student section last night

I'd rather aim my anger and disappointment on the negligent and apathetic school leadership who have wrapped Bill McCartney's Ferrari around a lamp post.

The hole has never been deeper.

Its foolish to pin blame on the lack of spirit displayed by students when the true root cause is an absence of football passion for fifteen years at the highest levels.

**** you Judith Albino. **** you Betsy Hoffman. **** you Hank Brown. **** you Phil DiStefano. Thanks for finally bank rolling the facilities project Bruce, but **** you, too, for not waking up and smelling the coffee back ten years ago. One more. **** you regents, for being pencil dicks with low expectations.

This is so true, they only have 5000 season ticket holders because their fans only give a rip about the CU game

Colorado (student) fans are the college football equivalent of Miami Heat fans. There's WAY more interesting things going on in Boulder, between the outdoors, partying, and beautiful women. I graduated in 2007, and the atmosphere shifted drastically after Hawkins came in. It's a legitimate joke on campus, and the games are just an excuse to get drunk at 8 AM. The general population on campus simply doesn't care. And to be honest, the administration doesn't mind this.

I think this discussion is another reason why this game needs to go away. Permanently. I didn't tailgate it or go to dinner downtown last night because I didn't want to run into any CSU fans. The Denver media has tried to force this game down our throats (when they don't have their heads so far up the Broncos' ***es), and its gross. Not only that, but MM hasn't helped by referring to CSU as our "rival" and talking about how great this game is for the students since he's been here. Our students looked like they were waiting for a collapse the entire game. Heres the reality to me: Our students don't care, and nobody here can blame them. This team hasn't given them much to get excited about. That being said, its time to quit punishing the season ticket holders for a game to cater to a group who isn't that interested.
