CHAMPAIGN, Ill. — Colorado improved to 7-1 this season after defeating Illinois, 3-2, in a five-set thriller on the second day of the Pac-12/Big Ten Challenge.

The Buffs and Fighting Illini played a very close match, with four of the five sets decided by two points. CU won the first (25-23) and third sets (28-26), while UI took the second (26-24) and fourth (25-12). The fifth and deciding set went extra points with the Buffs earning the exciting 17-15 win.

WHAT HAPPENED: Four Buffs recorded double-digit kills in the victory. Alexa Smith tallied a season-best 19 kills, while Naghede Abu had 15 kills with a match-high .619 hitting efficiency with just two errors on 21 attacks. Congrats again to the vball Buffs for what could be a valuable "resume building" win (IF of course they take care of business the rest of the season) when NCAA selection time comes!

Note- looking ahead to next weekend, hope some folks in the Denver/ Boulder area are able to make it to Friday evening's match in Boulder against Xavier, as well as some making the trek (maybe after the football game?) on Saturday to Moby Arena in Ft. Collins, to give a little Buff support for what I'm sure will be a raucous Ram "rivalry-fueled" crowd when the Buffs and Rams face off at 7:00 PM. There's also a morning match Saturday morning match at Moby against Albany.
(For those who don't follow volleyball closely CSU, 7-1 so far, already has two quality wins this season, having taken down (then) #15 Florida State last weekend and #16 Michigan yesterday evening. They were ranked #25 in last week's Coaches' Poll, but assume they'll be higher this week after the win over the Wolverines.)
