NEW YORK — Colorado junior Darby Kiernan and senior Paige Soenksen have been named to the 2017 Tewaaraton Award Watch List.

The Tewaaraton Award, presented by Under Armour, annually honors the top male and female college lacrosse player in the United States. The selection committees are made up of premier collegiate coaches and are appointed annually by The Tewaaraton Foundation.

Players not named to the initial lists have several opportunities to play their way into a spot as the season progresses. Watch list additions, if applicable, will be announced on March 16 and April 6. On April 27, the field will be narrowed to 25 men's and 25 women's nominees. Nominees can be players on the watch lists or players not on the watch lists, effectively allowing for a third round of additions.

Five men's and five women's finalists will be announced on May 11 and invited to the ceremony. The 17th annual Tewaaraton Award Ceremony will be held in Washington, D.C., on June 1.

The Buffs are back in action on Friday, March 3 when they host No. 14 Denver in Boulder. The game is set for a 3 p.m. start at Kittredge Field.

Congrats to the 2 Buff players for being nominated, and the coaches and other players who help make it happen! Being 2 of 50*** put on the watch list is a great honor in itself, and shows the progress being made by the players, as well as the overall team.
(Looking forward, although the team loses great goalie Soenksen (along with a huge contributing senior class) after this year, great we get to enjoy seeing junior Ms. Kiernan in Buff uniform next season.)

A few random notes-
  • ***Wasn't sure how many were placed on the initial list (the Buffs article didn't note it). Per http://www.insidelacrosse.com/artic...s-watch-lists-presented-by-under-armour/48533, it's 50 women players (there's also an equivalent men's award) on the watch list at this point.
  • Knowing VERY little about lacrosse, found the award website, http://tewaaraton.com/ , and looks like the Tewaaraton is definitely THE national player of the year award for lacrosse. From digging around the website, looks like it's been awarded since 2001, and for comparison, looks to me similar to the Heisman Trophy in football, or the Bowerman for track and field. (As noted in the article in the OP, it's even similar to the Heisman in that the finalists (five for each gender in this case) come to New York for the award announcement.)
  • Again, with my GREAT ignorance of lacrosse, it was fun to read the tewaaraton website's VERY short (few paragraphs) history of lacrosse, which can be seen at http://tewaaraton.com/history/ .
