ShaDon Brown
Assistant Football Coach/Cornerbacks

ShaDon Brown enters his first season with the Black Knights as the cornerbacks coach.

Brown comes to West Point after five seasons as an assistant at Wofford College. For the first four seasons he was the cornerbacks coach before moving to safeties in 2015. Brown spent the summer of 2015 working in the National Football League as a defensive backs intern with the Super Bowl 50 runner-up Carolina Panthers.

Each season at Wofford, Brown had a cornerback finish in the top five in the Southern Conference in interceptions and he coached three All-Conference cornerbacks from 2011-15. The Terriers were 15th nationally in pass defense among FCS teams in 2011 and 17th in 2012. Wofford led the Southern Conference in total defense twice (2011,2012) during his five years in Spartanburg, S.C.

In 2015 under Brown, Brion Anderson had three interceptions to lead the Terriers and tied for third in the Southern Conference. During the 2013 season, second-year freshman cornerback Chris Armfield led the team in interceptions with three, which tied for the most in the Southern Conference.

In 2012, Brown mentored College Sports Madness Third Team All-American cornerback Blake Wylie. He earned Second Team All-Southern Conference honors as he led the team and was fourth in the league with three interceptions.

Wofford was a two-time Football Championship Subdivision Playoff Quarterfinalist with Brown as an assistant in 2011 and 2012.

He also spent two seasons as the special teams coordinator from 2013 to 2014. During that span Brown mentored Kasey Redfern punter for the San Diego Chargers. Brown was promoted to recruiting coordinator in the spring of 2015.

Prior to Wofford, Brown spent three seasons as head coach at Rowan County High School in Kentucky. In 2010, the team posted a 10-2 record and won the Class 4A District 8 Championship for the first time since 1982 and reached the quarterfinals of the state playoffs. He was named the Kentucky Class 4A District 8 Coach of the Year in 2010 as well.

He led the Vikings to a 4-7 record in his first season and improved to 7-4 in 2009. Overall, Rowan County transformed from 18 wins in nine years to 21 in three years under Brown. He mentored 10 former players that went on to play college football.

In 2001, Brown started at linebacker for the winningest football team in Campbellsville University history. The team won 10 games and finished the season ranked #10 in the NAIA. After graduation, Brown became a graduate assistant outside linebackers coach at the University of the Cumberlands in 2003.

He was promoted to a full-time assistant for the 2004 and 2005 seasons, coaching the inside linebackers. While coaching for three years at the University of the Cumberlands, Brown was part of 24 wins and nationally ranked teams, defense, and rush offense in two of the three seasons. In 2005, the Patriot football team climbed to as high as #5 in the nation. In 2006, he returned to his alma mater Campbellsville University as the inside linebackers coach. In 2007 Brown coached at Boyle County High School in Danville, Kentucky.

Brown is a 1998 graduate of Danville High School in Danville, Kentucky where he was part of the 1994 Class 2-A State Championship team. Brown has a B.S. in Physical Education from Campbellsville University in Kentucky, where he was voted team captain in his senior season in 2002. Brown received his M.S. from the University of the Cumberlands in 2008.

His family includes wife Rhonda, daughter Shaelyn and sons Braylon and Keenan.

I like that distinction that he's replacing Clark and not taking over for both Tumpkin and Clark

Though I'm far from blown away by this resume due to lack of experience coaching at CU's level or within CU's recruiting footprint, I do think he's a good position coach.

He did a fantastic job at Army this year. Poor 2015 secondary that lost 4 of the 8 guys in their 2-deep right at the start of the season and they ended up turning in one of the best pass defenses in the nation.

I actually think this is an upgrade from Charles Clark. Certainly from where Clark was at the time he was hired at CU in the first place.

He seemed to be a very active recruiter for Army and Wofford from what I have seen, we'll see whether it translates to success on the recruiting trail here given the lack of Western ties and a very large difference in style and caliber of recruiting here.

With the background in the south, including as a HS coach, I'd think that he'd be good relating to recruits if Chev puts him in the Louisiana/Houston territory that Tumpkin had been doing. We'll find out.

The fact that he was a HC for high school is a good sign, imo. It's small time, but it takes some confidence and ability and to run any program, no matter what level. I question his 5 years at Wofford, because if he was that impressive, he wouldn't have stayed there that long, but maybe there were personal reasons.

Last year at Army doing so well excites me a bit. I don't think this is a project of a coach that Mac will need to babysit.

Hope his youth + HS coaching + personality all make him a good recruiter.

Clark doesn't get any credit for our improvenent in secondary? People pretty quick to label brown as an upgrade.

You're probably right about people under rating Clark's contributions. However, he did have the safety net of another DB coach in Tumpkin, and a very involved head coach with DB coaching experience. Wasn't really in a position where he was fully running the show. From what little I have read, it sounds like Brown did not have the same luxuries. Only time will tell, though.

I would hope they are going to replace tumpkin with a p5 guy with west coast ties.

At least someone with similar qualification as Tumpkin had when he was hired. JT was a good coach and smart guy, from all accounts, whose experience coordinating a defense was very valuable here.

Is this hire an upgrade, downgrade or a push compared to Clark?

Somewhere between a push & upgrade if we're comparing to Clark in 2013, I think.

Somewhere between a push & downgrade in 2017, considering Clark's growth under MM and established recruiting ties, I think.

Think it's hard to judge Clark's contributions and whether this is a push/upgrade/downgrade until we see someone else in his role and what effect Brown has. Tumpkin's role in our success was always a bit more obvious, and we should be able to tell if the hire we make there is an upgrade/push/downgrade.

Don't know anything about Brown other than what I am reading here and on the links but have a couple impressions.

One is that it may take him a year to adjust. He had an internship with an NFL team (Panthers) but other than that he has no time working with and against this level of player.

Balance of that is that everywhere he has been he seems to have excelled and he has been with winning teams. Gut says that his ceiling is very high.

With Brown coaching corners this past season, Army was sixth nationally in pass defense, allowing just 170.2 yards per game. The Black Knights tied for 11th with 17 interceptions and 42nd in opponent completion percentage (56.5). Only 16 teams allowed fewer touchdown passes (14) and only eight allowed fewer passing plays of 10-plus yards (82).
Army ranked 17th nationally in pass efficiency defense (115.11 opponent QB rating) after ranking 99th in 2015 before Brown arrived.

Coaching is not the question mark.
Bingo. If there is one position we can trust MM hiring, its a defensive back position coach. Recruiting is going to be key going forward with this program at every position coach.

Not a splashy hire, but I think he has a much higher ceiling then Clarke both teaching and recruiting.
It is crazy that this hire took so long. Hopefully, we still land Miller and Cotton and it is a moot point.
Maybe because it took so long anyone would be good, but I like this hire and am optimistic that he and Edwards will bring new energy to the staff.
The d coaching staff is going to earn their pay next year replacing a special group of seniors. Hopefully they all work together well.
Where do you think Brown will recruit?
My guess is 50 % Texas and 50% SEC country especially FL and LA.
That would be fine provided the next 2 slots go to so cal. If they replace Bernardi, which seems like a no brainer, that spot should go to CA too. Hopefully one of the remaining spots will go to someone with Polynesian ties.
