Defensive line solutions

Trump's Eunuch

I'm 6'4" and "own a gym" (not in my basement)
My opinion, a small part of the pass defense woes are because the linebackers have to cheat on the run because the line is so poor. Which is how Arizona killed us with play action seam route.

Regardless if that is or isn't correct the defensive line needs help. After wsu it's clear we need Wells, Tchangman, Montgomery and Allen (with Falo to sub) to play line. I know hockey and baseball way more than football so I don't know the formation name but it's the one with 1-2 down lineman and 4-5 linebackers on the l.o.s and 3-4 rush the play.

I remember only 3 tipped passes we have had this year (I'm sure there's 2-3 more) 2 happened last night by Montgomery and Allen.

I know they aren't lineman by trade but Tchangman Montgomery and Wells are all ~6'4 250. That is plenty big enough to play d line in college especially if they can get off the ball fast. Allen proved he can play end last night. Tchangman has been our best interior line disrupter after Mustafa and from what I've seen I have more faith in Wells and Montgomery to play on the opposite side of Lang than any other player.

Wells didn't have his best game but Tchangman Allen and Montgomery played very good at times against wsu, more so in the second half. To me it's obvious these four guys give us our best chance on the line in addition to Lang and Mustafa

Care to explain why? Tchangman has been the second best pass rusher this season if you ask me

You say he and others are big enough at 6'4"/250 to play DL, but that is how you get gashed in this league. Sacrificing some size for speed can work in unique situations, but it gets exposed over the long haul. A team like Utah would just feast on that lineup.

The problem with the pass rush is even the "good" pass rushers on this team are average at best.

Outside or delayed pass rush technique usually has you getting blocked more by TEs and RBs. Mucking it up with a three point stance against guys who are 50-60 lbs heavier than you is not a good idea.

There is no way Tchangman, Wells or Montgomery can play inside in the Star D. At DT or DE? Zero chance.

In the Dime/Money, they all struggle inside as well.

No.

Getting Antonio Alfano and Jason Harris to commit would be a huge step in improving our D line.

So would having Clemsons recruit class. Considering neither is on the table right now, let’s just focus on reality. Hopefully those 2 become reality but that changes nothing right now.

I can count on one hand the amount of times our young dt made plays not including Lang. It's one thing when your 17-18 year old kids are in skill positions it's an entirely different situation when you're down to nothing but true freshmen on the interior line. Nothing against them as players 17-18 is too young against good power 5 teams to expect much better. Allen showed me he can play.. as a linebacker in a role against wsu was basically d end (like I'm talking about), Wells is consistent and tchangman has been one of our best in the front this year.

They can't be much worse and I really hope the idea at this point isn't playing time for next year **** that win and get to a damn bowl

The defense doesnt get any pressure unless there is some kind of blitz. Tchangam, Wells, Falo, Lang, Sami, Callier, and even Mustafa are all kind of just guys, tbh.

I think that's selling the top 3 a little short, but I mostly agree.

Sami does his thing, it's not shades of Vince Wolfork, but ugh remember that first year of Javier Edwards? Dude was getting pushed 8 yards back per play. Lang is aight and Johnson is good, but they aren't going to blow anyone away in a passing down situation.

Where we really lack is on the edge, those guys just aren't good. Can't set the edge, can't rush the passer. We need a Jimmie Gilbert and a Chido blitzing.

I think the front 3 are fine at doing their jobs, particularly against the run, but I don’t think Lang or Sami are great at pushing the pocket and generating a pass rush, and Mustafa is probably more average time just above average than most CU fans want to admit.

He was near the top of the NCAA in qb hurries and tfl last year. We have players but we also have huge holes that need to get filled

I don't disagree, I said about the same thing in a thread, idk if it was this one? I think we should just say **** it, and play balls to the wall. Keep coverage simple and disciplined as possible, just go give effort. Obviously, have to fix the JAG thing, I just think this would be the best remedy for now. Have someone kick your ass because they are flat better, not running around like you don't know what the hell you're doing.

we have to get better upfront on defense for sure. it seems like the plan is to get bigger and stronger and have a larger rotation, which on paper allows the dl to fight to a draw while the lbs make plays. yes, our lbs have to play up in order to cover the dl issues, but the game breaks systemically. we can't cover in man in the secondary, like at all, and often we aren't athletic or experienced enough to play zone. so, we have systemic failure. when we won 10 games like 3 years ago, it was primarily because we had an athletic experienced secondary that could make **** happen. broken is broken and it is a shared burden.

I would like to see sacks/hurries team stat. I like analytics. I’ll look it up when I get time. It might help explain some things.
Good then you'll have no problem checking out his player page on cu's website. He had the most tfl at cu since Sam Rogers also posted 18 in 1993.

10 sacks in 253 attempts. Three each by Mustafa, Lange and Tchangham.

31 hurries. That seems inflated.

Even a strong back end needs more help than that.

Some of that is a lack of playmakers; some of that is just a defense that is extremely passive by design.

Have any of the freshmen flashed at all? I dont think I've seen Rodman or Williams make a play. JAG's?

Space eaters. Better against run. Not very agile. Ways to go. Likely will be recruited over and some will probably get “the talk”. I liked Murray coming in. Obviously that didn’t work. Weed and seed.

2020 should be quite a bit better on the DL.

Where we need to see improvement is with getting off blocks. Thud and shed. Our players catch a lot of blocks, not getting into position to make tackles or pressure the QB.
