Defensive Performance

So for some reason everyone on this board refuses to actually appreciate the win so here is the biggest stand out from me.

The defense had its best performance of the year by far.
-Kept the offense out of the endzone for the first time since 2009.
-Kept a team that put 30 up on OSU, to 12pts.
-Only allowed 286 yards had 2 turnovers, should have been 3.

Sure we were on pace to clean the floor with them in the first half and apparently our team lacks the killer instinct to do that, but they still won by 2 scores against a team that took two fellow conference members down to the wire. It was far from perfect, but some of you need to quit bitching for a few hours. Enjoy the fact that on a gorgeous day at Folsom, with a decent home crowd, the buffs pulled off a victory without it ever being in question.

One of the things that really impressed me is that they did it without Gillam in that 2nd half. We've seen some rough defensive play when AG wasn't out there. Daigh stepped up and made an impact. Our secondary really had a good day in both coverage and run support. Interior of the DL took care of business.

Penalties hurt us more than anything. Refs are really calling the PI and Def Holding tight this year. HCMM may need to fire his CB coach for some of the techniques being taught. :wink2:

Put out on the field with little rest far too often. After the 2nd Sefo pick they stood firm and made the 'Bows settle for 3. Could have had multiple INT's but those will come.

Hawaii's QB helped. Don't expect to see a QB be that bad the rest of the year.

Hawaii's QB play, especially the lefty, left a little to be desired. That said, our defense played really well. After some really awful games, the LBers played especially well today I thought. DL was stout and disruptive as well.

Good effort, thought the LB'S played well, especially with gillam out the second half. Don't think the rainbows are a true test but compared to prior years and games, job well done by the defense. Keep improving!

We did a good job getting pressure on them, was good to see

i appreciate the win. I expected us to run up the score, so I was wrong about that. But I'm so glad to see our defense really step up and have another great game. In my opinion, HCMM and staff are coaching up these young players. We heard so many times from previous coaches about a young time, young mistakes. It's so great to see improvement. I believe in HCMM. DC Baer is also starting to seem like he is getting it done!

iMO HUGE improvement over game 1 this year. At times today, like when we had that interception that was called back, the stadium had an energy I haven't seen there for some time! Nice day!

'Bows would have beaten us in week one. Wouldn't have mattered if we played here, on the island or on the moon. That's a big reason why I'm happy tonight.

First time in 51 games that the Buffs have not allowed a touchdown. We have played against (and lost to) many horrible teams in those 51 games, with many worse QBs. No TDs is an impressive performance against anyone.

Hawaii's QB has been very effective running the ball or scrambling out of pressure this season. Washington and Oregon State couldn't deal with him. Buffs took that away. Our DL and LBs were so sound on assignments today. Night and day from what they were like the first week.

George Frazier deserves a little love as well. Playing some iron man football, making a couple catches and also a few tackles today.

I don't know if Baer's a red ass Kirk Gibson type but whatever adjustments he has made in the way they prepare it is helping. Maybe some of it is also the younger guys understanding their assignments and executing them as they gain experience on the field. Kent Baer has taken plenty of criticism from this board including from me, but I credit him for the noticeable improvement. They are keeping us in games and if Sefo ever gets his throws to connect to all available receivers and we can block consistently for any of the running backs we're going to close the gap.

Baer has a huge challenge ahead as every team remaining on the schedule has more offensive firepower than we saw in either of our wins.

So nice to see real tackling this season! Our defense in the past look like they were oiled up with all the missed tackles.

The Hawaii OC was picking on Henderson all game. And so were the refs. Not a pretty performance at times. But Greg did what he needed to do to break up passes and keep Hawaii out of the EZ.

Betcha Cal tries to repeat on Hendo.

Hendo lost the ball several times not looking back. They will be working on that this week I suspect.

I expect him to have a better game next week and make that idea a mistake.

I was talking trash back and forth with a UH buddy of mine during the game. I told him UH had to have the worst QB and WR's in college football. I don't think I was wrong.

This is the key to why the win yesterday was so impressive. How many times did Colorado end up making some mediocre opposing QB look like a Heisman candidate in the last few years? The D kept their QB's uncomfortable and never allowed them to get on track. Great job by the D.

All the Hawaii qbs were terrible. They could not throw an accurate ball over yards. We basically just had to play our safeties in run support.

I was happy to see Clay Norgard get a sack. He got absolutely mobbed by his teammates when he came off the field after that.

Impossible not to root for Norgard. He's a high-energy situational guy who is being used properly. If he can find a way to get 15-20 lbs onto his frame while maintaining his explosiveness off the snap, he can be more than a situational guy.

On that sack, he split and blew up a double team to bring pressure. That was a high-level play in a huge situation.

I actually thought they started to show some good form against ASU. There were a lot of solo, open field tackles that I was just cringing in anticipation that they would "standard CU" and totally whiff. Now if they just avoid over-pursuing, especially on the zone reads, I think we've got some something.
