Details start to emerge from Vanderbilt sex crimes investigation

Pretty effed up if true.

Ainge opted not to reveal any names, saying only that four players were involved and that after a night of drinking one player "allowed" the other three to rape his girlfriend. "They were out," Ainge said, "they were drinking, boyfriend Vandy football player had sex with his girlfriend, then allowed his three teammates with him to also have sex with his girlfriend, and she did not want that to be the case."

That's very sad. Only slightly different than the Sipili (sp?) case.

What would be even worse is if they were recruits who didn't commit to the school.

I don't understand how people can have such disregard for another human being.

And I think we're getting a glimpse into what has happened with the Vanderbilt football program in order for them to upgrade their on-field talent as much as they have as quickly as they have.

Those four deserve their rears kicked but mostly the boyfriend of that woman who was raped...he ought to be shot.

James Franklin is bit scummy. Could have told you that from his time at Maryland.

Wasn't he the guy who said that part of the interview process for assistant coaches is to see if the guy has a hot wife (to know if he can recruit)?

I loved that comment, but it does make you wonder about the guy if it wasn't tongue-in-cheek.

I wonder if Vandy fans are catching grief from their SEC brethren? Gotta defend another black & gold team in that case!

If they're catching grief, it's for Vandy's inability to sweep this under the rug in true SEC style.

that may or not be true. but these kinds of generalizations based on the actions of a set of individuals are exactly the kind of thing we objected to during the Barnett _scandal_ (and Ward Churchill "thing") at CU in the early 00's. i hate to see us do it, too.

if true, these actions are despicable.

i went to Vandy for a year and it's a very serious academic school. proud of it's place in the South (almost too much imo). i doubt that climate has changed.

as far as upgrading talent, Vandy has a lot to sell. they have been good at basketball for a while. i guess my point is Vandy becoming another cheat/crime factory for success is not going to happen.

edit: if Franklin is a scumbag, i can't speak to. but that would be a big big break in hiring at VU.

Yup. That's James Franklin. And we wasn't kidding.

He's a scumbag.

One big difference between the Barnett non-scandal and this one, arrests and charges filed. But we that never mattered here in CO where the medial convicted the program before any facts were detailed and then they decided to ignore the facts once they were being revealed.

Yep. After it was deemed okay for Hnida to not name her offender, it was open season after that. And nameless accusations cast suspicion on 100+ guys, the whole program, and really the school. You can't distance your program from an alleged rapist if you don't know who it is.

This does not look good, apparently the girl was an unofficial recruiting hostess:

The filing also includes a new allegation about interactions between the alleged victim and former head football coach James Franklin and former director of performance enhancement Dwight Galt — both now at Penn State University.

Referring to records, the attorneys said the victim was contacted by Franklin and Galt during a medical examination four days after the rape to explain "that they cared about her because she assisted them with recruiting."

It went on to say that at some point, "Coach Franklin called her in for a private meeting and told her he wanted her to get fifteen pretty girls together and form a team to assist with the recruiting even though he knew it was against the rules. He added that all the other colleges did it."

A football coach who allegedly got involved in covering up some kind of sexual misconduct?

I think somebody got confused when they told the search committee to go out and find the next Joe Paterno...

This isn't to say that this kind of crime couldn't happen in another D1 conference, but those SEC schools seem to have some of the biggest scandals in all of CFB. I would have thought that one of his buddies would have had the common sense to help prevent this from happening. Unbelievable.

It was tweeted and removed promptly. Someone in sports marketing wasn't thinking of context and recent history.
