Did Plati Coin the Term "Red Zone?"

I have heard that as well. IIRC, it was while he was official scorer for the Broncos many years ago.

From his CU bio:

"He has worked 321 Bronco games through the 2010 season, and among the many innovative numbers he is credited with first charting was “scoring percentage inside-the-20,” which is now commonly known as the red zone."

Looks like Plati was the one to first start tracking the statistic. I belive ther term "red zone" originates from the military's use of red zone as being within firing range.

This is from his bio on cubufs.com
He spent his senior year in college (1982) as the public relations director with the triple-A Denver Bears Baseball Club of the American Association. He has been a member of the Denver Broncos statistics crew since 1980, creating and maintaining miscellaneous stats (he received game balls from the NFL team for their back-to-back Super Bowl wins). He has worked 321 Bronco games through the 2010 season, and among the many innovative numbers he is credited with first charting was “scoring percentage inside-the-20,” which is now commonly known as the red zone. In the 1980s, he worked as a statistician for TBS for NBA telecasts and continues to work freelance for several networks, both television and radio, in a similar capacity. In 2004, he was appointed by major league baseball to serve as one of two official scorers for the Colorado Rockies baseball team.

And here's a link to a story that confirms it -> http://www.denverpost.com/sports/ci_7595238

It was George Allen while working an NFL game with Vin Scully. I went something like this, "Hey Vinny, that linebacker is red-dogging in the red zone!"
