Dillon Interview

FYI: I will be talking with Shane this afternoon and post a blog exclusively here by days end.

He told me last week before the rumors began that he was going to do this. It was a tough decision for him but ultimately its what he thought was best for him. He's a good kid that just felt let down by the University. More this afternoon.

Hurry.

Thanks in advance.

:why: I have no axe to grind, but the only way I think he could be let down would be if he was promised the starting QB job by Embo....and I would be dumbfounded if that happened. I re-watched a portion of the Spring game, Dillon simply isn't ready. Maybe he could be, but the injury puts him in a bad place with Sefo, Gehrke and Apsay hitting campus this fall and next, respectively.

That really wouldn't surprise me at all. Embree was all about playing his guys.

The articles have all been very positive and I am guessing that will be the standard response. Shane had nothing but nice things to say about CU and his time here. Reed, please do not lead him down a path where he changes that tune. Let sleeping dogs lie.

amen

Never would have led him that way...and didn't in anyway. It's not scandalous in anyway, and by being let down, he basically meant his second family got fired and he felt lost...again. I will have something up by 5pm.

Will also begin weekly chats next week...getting ready to grind on the season.

I can see that. Happens a lot when there is a coaching change...good luck to Dillon.

I'll never understand the loyalty to a losing coach, but good luck with basketball I guess.

The colonel enters with a zinger! I am glad Dillon has seemed very cordial and mature with the media, but the whole thing just stinks of a simple truth. He wasn't on top of the depth chart and wasn't confident he would ever become a starter, probably because of his shoulder.
Case closed.

I wish Dillon the best of luck. Sounds like his shoulder prevented him from physically and mentally being up to the task.

Knowing that he wouldn't have made an impact on the team, I'm glad we'll have another scholarship to continue our search for a quality signal caller.

The university has let us all down.

Agreed. And still having 4 QB's, this really shouldn't be to big of a surprise.

I don't know much about Dillon's genetics but 180 to 200 lbs isn't going to get it done at 6'4" I think he needed physical development to play at the Pac level and when Embree left he lost his biggest supporter. A guy who was willing to groom him to be the guy. Now Dillon is in a battle to be the guy and he isn't ready and won't be for another year or two. Wood wins the job. The new coach has no loyalties to him and is picking guys who suit his system better. I'm not sure Dillon is a pistol type QB with that physique. The guys coming in all are more pistol type guys at 6'1" or so and closer 200 lbs. Dillon was really going to be in trouble to ever see the field if he didn't really see growth this year.

My guess he realized this and decided he didn't have the love of the game to be a guy who may never play at CU after being considered the golden child for a recruiting cycle and a Freshman season. I hope he goes somewhere where he can play both b.ball and f.ball. I still think he could be a good QB one he puts on some weight and plays in a spread/passing type offense.

Is it not yet 5 pm or did I miss the post?

Tick tock. Why post to the biggest CU fan site in the world that you'll post something at 5pm and then NOT do it? Isn't this the same guy that already was discredited before a few months back? Maybe it was even a year ago. Smart move on OP's part...

Shane would compete for the starting quarterback job against teammates and friends Connor Wood and Nich Hirschmann. Following the spring, Hirschman decided to transfer to Akron when it was said he would not be the starting quarterback. Dillon again reached out to his family to discuss the possibility of returning to basketball. "I just didn't preform very well at all in the spring. I gave it 100% but was pretty awful overall" Dillon told me today in a phone conversation.
It's hard to acknowledge that you've reached your ceiling, especially when it is lowered by injury. Props to him for having the maturity to acknowledge that to himself (and even more amazingly, to others) and to take the appropriate action.
