DirecTV merger with AT&T could be good news for Pac-12 Network subscribers

I forgot to post this since I was banned... DirecTV guy at Sams said they'll have Pac-12 network in 4 weeks

A young-ish black guy? Yeah, he has told me that the last four times I've been there.

at this point, it's too late. They lost my business a long time ago. I hope they pick it up so there's additional revenue to the league, but it makes little difference to my life now.

This is huge for CU.

I'm not sure that it makes much difference in revenue, but it makes a monumental difference in recruiting. Family/Guardian/Friends of recruits nationwide will be able to see the CU games. On that same note, it makes a big difference for CU fans who live outside the footprint.

Let us pray.

It's also pretty big to have the games available in bars.

The linked article says "expect approval of the acquisition by end of May": http://www.digitaltrends.com/web/att-directv-48-5-billion-merger-expected-to-proceed/

I'm not sure what that means. Is it approved but will take another year to implement? Is the merger instant (doubt that). After the merger, how long to add the Pac12? Is adding the Pac really a done deal after the merger? Who runs the DirecTV operation? AT&T or DirecTV?

Ill venture to guess that there is language in ATTs deal with the P12 that addresses a merger like this. So, its probably back to the negotiating table.

All the M&A in the content delivery space tells you the rose is off the bloom for that industry. There is no growth in subscribers and they've likely reached the wall for what they can reasonably charge customers. Yet, content providers likely continue to ask for more money. M&A does increase negotiating power for the delivery company when they negotiate with content provider companies because a blackout causes them to lose more and more eyeballs. And then there is that whole streaming thing thats going to allow you to have a la carte TV.

Larry Scott missed the boat for bigger money by about 10 years. The model is unsustainable.

I disagree a bit, Miami. Sports is an unusual content source where to those that watch, live or near live with a slightly delayed recording start is critical to the enjoyment of said content. You really cannot say that about any other content type. If anything, sports will be more valuable going forward as people continue to push to cut their cord.

This is how I have heard most industry experts explain it. Sports continues to be more and more valuable with advertisers because it is the one thing people do not want to DVR.

It sucks when you have an unavoidable conflict and are dodging people, the radio, and the TV until you are able to settle in front of yours to watch it later. I will go so far as to have my wife turn on the TV and start the recording so I don't unintentionally catch a score or a highlight before I am able to flip over.

Sports, awards shows and the news.

Also competition reality shows like Idol & Voice where live voting determines who gets to stay.

Nothing else is all that valuable to advertisers.

Television shows need to incorporate sponsor products into the storyline somehow. Like, "Hang on baby, I have to get my Trojans. Great protection with that natural feel, ya know."

I dumped cable last week. Will sign back up when football season rolls around. The cost is ridiculous.

You're denying ESPN their monthly revenue ($5) that affords those big contracts that puts money in P12 coffers and feeds money to p12 schools. You bastard.

I remember several years ago when Scott said the P-12 network was in serious negotiations with direct tv. They had all of us hanging on to every rumor about how close they were to an agreement. Time Warner, Comcast, Cox Cable, Dish Network and others were signing on, one by one. Hell, my son who is close friends with the Direct tv sales manager in Cali kept telling him they were close to a deal. Those of us who had, or still have Direct TV were calling them night & day threatening to cancel contracts if Direct didn't sign on with the P-12 network. It never f-c-ing happened! I'll believe it when I see it on my menu screen.
