Easing on restrictions for academically at risk student athletes at CU

Sounds like HCMM has managed, with RG's help to start breaking down barriers that were seen as challenges to our competitiveness. It also seems that we have improved our academic support for athletes and HCMM is not afraid to suspend kids who are not putting in the time on their schoolwork.

This bodes will for our future!

reserving judgement. in general I'm not in favor of lowering academic standards -- let the SEC and Big XII play their game and the B1G, Pac and ACC play ours. Just because they gave up on the "student athlete" doesn't mean we have to.

It's also not really changing entry requirements, as much as allowing the staff a little flexibility with kids who just make those minimum requirements. As long as the academic support is there to help these kids be successful, it's a win.

Yes. If the support is there, and effective, then this should succeed.

It also isn't uncommon for kids who are heavily into athletics to not be tremendously motivated academically early in high school. There are a lot of kids who do poorly in their first year or two of high school and then turn it on academically once college becomes a target for them.

The show that they are willing and able to do the work but their overall academic record is dragged down by their early mistakes.

If M2 is looking at kids like this then the academic risk isn't that great.

Get some players. 40 or so athletes with academic issues isn't going to hurt the rep of the University as a whole. OTOH, the FB team not getting boat raced every weekend in the fall will help the University overall. Why is this even an issue?

No, I'm pretty sure JE's first full class was similar. What I do like is that there seems to be much more emphasis on supporting the AD recently, and working with HCMM and admissions to get a few more kids in is just another example of this.

He did. It takes a strong organization with the right leadership and a supportive administration to make that work at CU. It's rare that we've got all that in place.

It must be tied to the coach or maybe the athletic director, because I remember when I was at CU, all freshmen athletes - regardless of sport or gender - were required to spend a certain amount of time in study hall. Once you proved you didn't need that, you were allowed to study as you saw fit. But the point was that every Freshman had to be there. I don't think that's the case anymore. I know this because I was dating an athlete who was a Freshman who told me this. Now, it's entirely possible she was not truthful with me. Knowing her as I do now, that wouldn't surprise me. :lol:
