BOULDER — University of Colorado men's head golf coach Roy Edwards announced the team's 2022-23 schedule Wednesday, and it once again features many familiar annual tournaments along with a couple of events for the first time in decades. Edwards is entering his 17th season at the reins of the Buffalo program, with this team having as much if not more potential as he's had during his tenure. Despite being young – one senior, six sophomores and two freshmen – the sophomores are all experienced and the two frosh include the state of Colorado's top prep performer. Leading the way is sophomore Justin Biwer, who set 19 school records as a true freshman last season. The season gets underway on Sept. 4-5 in the Notre Dame Fighting Irish Classic, the fourth time the Buffaloes are entered in the prestigious meet; CU finished ninth out of 14 teams last October in the event, with true frosh Dylan McDermott finishing third with a 7-under 203 score. "We are playing one of the best schedules in the country once again this year, and as always on some of the top courses," Edwards said. "We typically start the season at Air Force, but with Notre Dame moving earlier we will be starting in South Bend this fall, which always features one of the best fields in the nation. We really like the sequencing as we round out the fall on Maui in the Kaanapali Intercollegiate. The Buffs then have their usual three tournaments next on the docket (playing in all well over 100 times combined), the Gene Miranda Air Force Invitational (Sept. 9-11), the New Mexico William H. Tucker Intercollegiate (Sept. 23-24) for the 66th time and CU's own Mark Simpson-Colorado Invitational (Oct. 3-4). The Buffs have won their own meet eight times in the 11 years of its existence, though tied for fifth a year ago; senior-to-be Adam Matteson placed third with a school record-tying 13-under par performance. CU closes out the fall portion of its schedule at the Nevada Wolfpack Classic (Oct. 10-11), the third time it will participate and for the first time since 1983, and then in Hawaii's Kaanapali Classic (Oct. 28-30), where the Buffs posted their best finish – second – during the 2021-22 campaign. "Starting at Classic Club in Palm Desert against a diverse field will be a good kick-start to the spring season," he added. "We go back-to-back over spring break on two of the best courses in the West-Eugene Country Club and at TPC Harding Park. We are looking forward to a great season ahead." Colorado will again open the spring season in the Wyoming World Match Play Championship in Palm Desert, Calif. (Feb. 10-11); one player will then immediately head west to Los Angeles to play in Tiger Woods' Genesis Collegiate Showcase at the famous Riviera Country Club on Feb. 13. After a dual match against Nevada on Feb. 27, March begins with Wyoming's (Palm) Desert Intercollegiate (March 1-3). CU will then play in Oregon's Duck Invitational (March 26-27) for the first time in nine years, and then closes the month in Stanford's "The Goodwin" in Palo Alto (Mar. 30-April 1). The BYU Cougar Classic in Provo, Utah (April 21-22) closes out the regular season schedule; CU last participated in the event in 1989 after playing in it 17 times beginning in 1968. It will be the final tune-up ahead of the 11th annual Pac-12 Championships, which will take place at Stanford's Golf Course in Palo Alto, April 28-30. The NCAA regionals are set for May 15-17 at six different sites: Salem, N.C.; Auburn, Ala.; Bath, Mich.; Norman, Okla.; Las Vegas, Nev.; Morgan Hill, Calif. Those six regionals will each send five teams on to the NCAA Championship Finals, which are set for May 26-31 in Scottsdale, Ariz., where Arizona State will host the meet at Grayhawk Golf Club. Individuals who are not on the travel squad or who rotate in-and-out will also play in some select other tournaments as long as they are within their competition day maximums to do so.
