After what I am sure he'll call a long strange trip on the Hawkins express Coach Kies goes back to where he came from re-signing with Cal. likely absolving us of paying most if not all of his 2011 salary:

Kiesau will be the Passing Game coordinator and WR coach for the Bears. A step back from his job at CU but still ahead of where he left Cal 5 years ago.

And I trust he'll continue to do a good job of recruiting and coaching receivers there, which was where he looked most brilliant (and comfortable) here. Good luck to coach Kies against 10 of his conference opponents.

good way to land on your feet with the obligatory back-step. he'll get another shot to move back up the ladder with much less Hawk stink on his resume.

I originally hoped he might stay on, but this is probably for the best. Especially sense he had a guaranteed contract which would have paid him too much for a positions coach.

I really hope Kennedy turns out to be the TX recruiting star we need, because Kiesau is definitely a very solid recruiter himself (and a good WR coach) and now we're going to be fighting against him for kids out of CA.

I wish we could have kept Kiesau. He wanted to stay, even as a WR coach.

I'm sure he did want to stay, he was due about 220K to be a WR coach.

He and his wife really liked it here and wanted to stay long term, not just for the next year.

That is all well and good, but five years in one spot is a lot better than most college assistants get.

WR coaches are just about as interchangeable as any position on a given coaching staff.

Kiseau seemed like a good coach, but Kennedy has a lot more going for him imo. If that guy can use his connections to get us 4-5 players from Texas every year while being a non awful WR coach, we're a lot better off.

We'll see. Kiesau proved he could get quality players to Boulder. Kennedy's going to have to produce before I am convinced we made the right move there. Perhaps bring in a quality kid out of Texas for this class?

What's the opinion here of Ashley Ambrose?

Seems to be a solid recruiter and decent position coach. However, it's still very early in his coaching career, and he hasn't proven much yet. Most around here are of the opinion that he was one of the few coaches we would have liked to have kept.

I know. Just saying we had a good coach who wanted to stay. I hope Kennedy is as good as advertised.

but Kiesau wasn't Embree's "guy". i think that has as much to do with it as anything. i applaud JE for cleaning house minus Buffs. I'm not 100% sold (or even 75%) on the "back to the past" moves....but, as least there IS a logic that is consistent in the Cabral/Hagan/EB/Jashon moves.

Don't get me wrong, I have my doubts on Kennedy. Being mr. recruiter of Texas kids to Texas is not at all similar to getting Texas kids to Colorado. Especially when we play in the P12 now. That said, I'm sure he has all kinds of contacts down there with the coaches of the high schools and such. Plus, if Texas likes a kid, but has no room for them, they might be wise to steer them Colorado's way since they won't play us anymore and Kennedy was one of their own.

That is my big concern. Anyone can be a good recruiter at UT. Will it translate to CU? That remains to be seen.

It remains to be seen, yes. But Kennedy has the connections at the high schools now. Same for Kanavis. We aren't going to have to try to establish those connections. We have them. Now it's a matter of using them properly. I don't know how much we can legitimately expect UT to steer kids our way that they can't fit in their classes, though. Once a kid finds out he can't go to the school of his choice, I doubt he's going to be very receptive to whatever school they recommend.

for Kanavis, I think it's something to hope for and expect. Kennedy, a lot depends on how his departure affects his relationship with Mack, the new staff, and the UT mothership. if there's ill-will, or a scapegoating for the lack of production at WR (Kirkendoll was passable at best *and* there will be scapegoating), and the 5 win season (blame is a Longhorn specialty to shore up that absurd sense of "Everyone wishes they were Texas"....not sure the rally up to CU and our good friend Coach Kennedy bandwagon has much ooomph.
