Even without Kiffin Tennessee managing to look like a bunch of a-holes

The kid is welcome to transfer to a JC or D-II school and redshirt (or play) and still have 2-3 years of eligilibility. Plus you don't know how bad things really are with his dad vs. the family going to the media with the sympathy card trying to get a release.

Saginaw Valley State (his home town) would be delighted to have his talents and then he could live at home and really be there to support his dad versus being 90 minutes away in Ann Arbor or 75 minutes away in East Lansing.

Well, 1) regardless of whether they release him, he'd have to sit out next year unless he goes I-AA or DII, so I don't think not wanting to sit out is really the issue (although there are waivers you can get for hardship -- actually pretty sure UT had a receiver from Iowa transfer in under that rule for the same reasons in the last few years); 2) do you really not see a difference between going to Michigan or Michigan State vs. Saginaw Valley State (or any of the directional MAC programs)? Not even just for football, but also for school they are just much better, and the drive from either Ann Arbor or East Lansing is not bad at all -- much better than Knoxville, and could go home pretty much whenever he wants; 3) Does it even matter whether his dad is on his death bed, or the kid just realized after a year away and not seeing his dad get better it was time to move back closer to home, or you're right and he just wants to leave because UT blows? It still makes them looks like a-holes since he's not asking for a release to go to Florida or even to open it up to a nationwide search, but just to schools in his home state who UT doesn't even play.

Nicely said. I agree there could be some back story here we don't know about, but suggesting Saginaw State as a viable alternative is disingenuous on several levels.

This has gotten way out of hand. Universities already have a system in place to discourage FBS transfers on a mass scale. That is, players who transfer must sit out at least 1 year and a denial of in-conference transfers. But to establish a policy where a kid cannot transfer to any school they recruit against, that's totally vague and BS. These kids are not slaves. The NCAA needs to step in and codify the rules better and not leave it up to the whim of a potentially vindictive coach or AD.

I'm sure Eastern Michigan would be interested also ... the MAC is a FBS conference and doesn't suck (3-1 in bowls so far with one more to play). And EMU just missed becoming bowl eligible this year.

And it's about an hour and a half drive from Saginaw.

Of course my suggestion has nothing to do with the fact that EMU is my undergrad alma mater.

having attended Vandy for a couple years, i think Vol fans are scum. Vandy fans (what few of them there are)...are silly, but Vol fans. ugh. I still kind of pull for Vandy hoops. I like Stallings.

Knoxville is one of the ****tier towns/campuses of the SEC too.
