Expectations '13-'14

I know the 2012-2013 season just ended, but I wanted to see what everyone thought next years expectations should be. We are going to be a year older and also have another year of Tad's recruits. I think its safe to say I expect to be a preseason Top 25 team, legitimate contender for the Pac-12 regular season title, run in the Pac-12 tourney, and a 5 seed or higher in the NCAA Tournament. I know a few years ago these expectations could've seemed crazy, but Tad has elevated our program to new heights. Thoughts?

We'll have a lot more depth, that's for sure. The think I hope for is more consistent scoring. No more of those damned 8 minute droughts.

I think finishing the year as a top 25 team and being one of the top 2-3 teams in the Pac are realistic goals. I don't think we'll start out in the Top 25 though. Might get some votes.

Some of this depends on if Andre Roberson stays or not

contend for regulare season and tourney conference championship, start the season top 30 in the country, finish top 15 and head to the NCAA Tourney as a 5-6 seed.

I don't see anyway we don't start in the top 25 with or without Dre. This team is going to be very good.

25 wins
Top 15 ranking
Conference title, either regular season or tournament

We won't start out with a preseason Top 25 ranking, the eastern media won't give CU that much respect out of the gate. Had we won our game with Illinois, then maybe. But we're going to have to win some early games before they take notice.

Good lord 'Tini, you and have the exact same expectations. I'll add no more bad losses. Winning road record in conference.

If Dre, Chen and SHT are the only personnel losses, I'd say top 20 nationally is realistic, as well as a top 2 finish in the conference and our first Sweet 16 in decades.

Finish the season in the top 4 in the Pac-12, at least make it to the conference tourney finals, get a 6/7 seed in the dance, and make a Sweet 16 run.

Two guys on First Team Pac 12 again
Top 4 finish in conference- Boyle has finished 5th every year so far
Top 25 ranking at end of year
6 seed or higher in NCAA tourney
Sweet 16 appearance or higher

That would be great!

Should be 20+ wins in the regular season and a bye in the Pac-12 tourney.

I understand your logic with the east coast bias and all, but I just don't agree. The tournament has gotten us a lot of exposure (countless times today we heard "in the Colorado game" during the UI vs. UM game) and we return nearly everyone. We will start out in the top 25, I'm going to guess #19.

To me it is pretty simple

With Andre - League champs, at least Sweet 16

Without Andre - League champs, at least Sweet 16

This is where things should take off for CU basketball to the final level....the program has become set and now it is time to make some noise nationally

If Dre comes back then definitely a run to the Sweet 16. If not then at least a tournament appearance and either way, finish top 4 in the conference standings. I'm not as concerned about how we do in the conference tournament.

Way too many variables in play:

Does Dre come back? Almost assuredly not
Does Spencer declare? 50/50
Do we lose Adams to a med retirement? Rumored at one point, but unlikely.
Does Boyle leave? Unlikely, not unpossible.
Do any potential unknown transfers come in or go out? Very possible.

This was an inconsistent team. You don't win the PAC 12 by losing to ASU and OSU at home, even if you have a starter out. Is the inconsistency attributable to youth? Maybe, but we went offensively cold (pun intended) too many times and nobody stood out as a go-to scorer. Right now, I expect a bye in the conference tournament and an invite to the dance, so just a bit better than this season. If Johnson, Booker, Scott or a freshman become consistent scorers, I'd bump my expectations.

IMO, a lot of the consistency issues can be attributed to the youth and lack of a bench. We won't really have those issues next year. We should expect a big improvement next year. If Boyle can take a team that goes only six deep to the tournament, what's he going to do with the most athletic team in CU history along with returning nearly everyone and a bench that goes 9 or 10 deep?

If no one steps up and is able to shoot consistently from the outside, we are going to continue to have problems going forward. It's no coincidence that the only time we looked like a legit tournament team in the game vs. Illinois was when ski was making shots during the first 7 minutes of the second half.

Totally agree 'Tini. I think a big problem with our scoring droughts is caused by our starters wearing down and playing too many minutes.

If Boyle can rest Dinwiddie/Booker/Scott/XJ a few more minutes/game, they will definitely feel better and make more shots, and our bench next year will have some serious scoring ability.

Next year, I think Boyle will start pressing/trapping teams more often, and we will develop a consistent bench that doesn't dropoff when a few starters gets into foul trouble.

Also, we will have more shooters off the bench: Thomas, Jenkins, Fletcher and Hopkins. Each one of them offers something different to our offense.

I'm not sure if we will have a sharp shooter, but we won't suffer through as many scoring droughts as we did this year.
