Firing Miles and hiring a coach like Jimbo could cost LSU $20 - $25 million

The cost estimate includes the costs of Jimbo's buyout ($5 million) and the various assistants involved in both sides.

That AD better be very, very sure he knows what he's doing. We're more likely to give up football than we are to attempt something like this, and we'd get crucified in the press for even attempting it. Keep in mind LSU actually declared bankruptcy earlier this year

So, really, in consideration of what Les is paid every year they might be able to position the coaching change as saving the university money in the midst of difficult financial times.

LSU coach Les Miles didn't come out and say it but let the Tiger Gridiron Club know Friday that Saturday's game against Texas A&M will be his last, two sources who attended the group's luncheon said.​

"He didn't use those words but he made it clear that Saturday is his last game," one Gridiron club member said. Miles regularly speaks to the club at lunch on Fridays before all home games.

"He said, 'We're a second family to him and he's going to miss us, he appreciates his real friends, and then he told us good-bye,'" the source said. "It was very emotional but in control."​

Miles reportedly left to a standing ovation.​

And they sent the SID to cast some doubt on this story...

An LSU spokesman said Friday that Miles was not announcing his departure but rather thanking the boosters for their support.

"He didn't say it was his last game. And he wouldn't say that because he doesn't know what's gonna happen yet," sports information director Michael Bonnette said. "What he said was, if indeed this is my last game, thanks for all y'all have done for me."

Miles is 110-32. Typically a team that replaces a coach that was a consistent winner like miles results in a decline in the program about 2/3 of the time. Just ask Nebraska, they've done it twice (Solich & Pellini).

We already have a thread speculating on wether we can get him. So maybe just the news on this goes here. I'll guess that he already worked out the terms of the buyout.
 
I just don't get it, what are those people thinking? Do expect a coach to go undefeated every year? Maybe all those corndogs they supposedly eat also contain hallucinogens.

I guess if you get beat by both Alabama and Arkansas, and dont appear competitive in said games, you get fired. Just like Gary Barnett.

I agree with what your saying. LSU is just having a down year. Thats no reason to fire a coach.

While I agree it is a premature firing, been more than one down year.
 
I know it's hard for us to comprehend at CU, but at some point, LSU expects to beat Bama and seriously contend for a NC in late November, not mid September.

I'm not saying they are right to fire him, but the big time program boosters don't settle for perennial 9-10 win seasons. The want 11-12 win seasons.

It's been downhill ever since the Ryan Perrilloux saga. If Les has that QB and he lives up to the hype, they're building a monument in Baton Rouge.

All Im saying is that firing a coach that wins because you think you can hire a replacement that will beat Saban is a very very dangerous proposition. What if Jimbo Fisher says no?
 
LSU AD Joe Alleva hires...

Carl Franks, 7-45, including two 0-11 seasons.
Ted Roof, 6-45, including one 0-12 season.
David Sutcliffe, 46-53
Bill Hiller (baseball) 121-214

Was AD and during the Duke Lacrosse scandal which was later proven to be unfounded and has led to numerous lawsuits against Duke but he left before it was settled.

I'll venture that LSU is aiming substantially higher than a Cutcliffe type of hire. There is nothing in Alleva's background to suggest he's the guy to successfully make the decision that annually beats Saban.
 
I get that LSU needs to beat Bama, and that apparently isn't Miles, but the dude averages 10 wins a season. Maybe he needs a few new assistants? IDK...but firing someone like LM at such a hefty price tag seems ridiculous to me. But I've been mired in the pathetic-ness of CU for so long, maybe that blurs my vision.

Sometimes you just have to realize you are up against it. Saban at Bama is like that. LSU would be better served to wait him out and keep Miles. Saban won't be at Bama forever. But perhaps their mistake will be our gain. I can't believe I'm actually thinking this is possible.

Nothing has changed from a few days ago when this thread was started. people have been saying that he was unlikely to come back for a while now.
 
Nebraska thought they were aiming higher when they fired a coach who had won 9 games (Solich) and replaced him with a big name NFL guy in Callahan.

I would say Miles telling a booster club that he is coaching his last game at LSU changes things substantially from what they were when this thread started. That's just me, though.

Sorry I was thinking about the other Les Miles thread where links were posted on Monday speculating about his inevitable departure. I guess I have been under the assumption he would be gone from LSU the whole time, so this news about the boosters doesn't change much for me yet.

Or when they decided that Pelini winning 9 games every year wasn't good enough.
 
LSU is 13-10 the last three years in SEC play. This trend along with losing the last 5 outings against Bama is their beef.
