Unlike a football or basketball coach where it's hard to see where those ties make much of a difference, the AD job is very much about university politics, state politics, in-state fan support and the all-important booster relationships.

An "Insider" wouldn't have much of a learning curve on navigating these waters and would have at least a foundation of a personal network for fundraising in the state and with out-of-state alums.

On the other hand, there's a commonly held belief that many of the issues at CU are institutional and systemic. If the idea is to bring a new vision, maybe it's an advantage to bring in an "Outsider" who hasn't been tarnished by the way things are/have been and has fresh ideas & expectations that have worked in practice elsewhere.

Outsider. We need an overhaul. The right leader will be able to rally the state, the university, fans and boosters no matter their ties.

Hire whomever is the most qualified. Whether it be the Rangers guy who was at CU in the late 80's and early 90's or someone else, I don't care. Get the guy who can effectively raise money, provide leadership, and get the facilities project done.

Mike Bohn was the ultimate insider. Outside of hiring from within, he had the most ties to CU and Boulder of any potential candidates at the time of his hiring.
If the school wants to go in a different direction, they'd be we'll served to find a person with the skill set they're looking for with no thought given to the person's ties to the area.

I don't think he could be considered "the ultimate insider."

Bohn's only contact with CU was the fact that he graduated from Boulder High and his mom still lives in Boulder. He had never worked for CU in any capacity before he was hired to be CU's athletic director.

He did work at CSU (3 years as associate athletic director) and at Air Force (6 years as assistant athletic director), but he had no direct ties to the CU athletic department and no experience in the CU athletic department when he was hired to be CU's AD.

Connections to CU is not that important but connections to the Business community in Colorado would be important for Fund Raising connections. This is an area that Mike Bohn struggled.

I believe it was noted when he was hired that he was the first AD without any direct ties to CU when hired. Tharp had been a University Counsel. Crowder as a football coach. I'm not sure what Marolt's were.

Coach of multiple NCAA skiing champions at CU.

I don't give a damn about his/her ties to anywhere. I give a damn about his/her ABILITY TO CREATE ties to anywhere.

I pointed out last time around when Embree got the job -- that Coach Mac didn't have CU ties when he was hired but he became a legendary Buff. Ditto with Ceal Barry. If the AD is successful, doesn't matter if s/he's never been to the Rockies before, they'll become someone with substantial CU ties.

Ties to the University are actually a hindrance more often then not. We choose the comfort of a known commodity as opposed to finding the best person for the job. Cases in point are Tad Boyle and Bill McCartney. They are the best we've ever had and neither one had any previous affiliation with the University of Colorado. Plus our worst coach in history was a historically beloved CU alumn.

Great point and rep worthy.
