So, the women's hoops team start their last weekend of the regular season in about an hour with a game in Tuscon against Arizona.

Arizona is 9-18 overall and resides in last place in the Pac-12 at 2-14. The Wildcats have lost four straight, but their last win was an impressive one, a 60-57 triumph at home over perennial power and then No. 12 ranked Stanford on Feb. 8, snapping a 24-game losing streak to the Cardinal. Arizona ranks 11th in the Pac-12 in scoring (58.0 ppg) and 12th in field goal percentage (.361). The Wildcats are one of the better offensive rebounding teams in the league, grabbing just under 13 per game. Defensively, Arizona allows 67.1 points per game on 42.7 percent from the floor. The Wildcats have done well defending the perimeter, allowing 30.4 percent from 3-point range, the fourth best mark in the Pac-12.

Sophomore forward LaBrittney Jones tops the Wildcats in rebounding (6.0 rpg), blocks (1.4 bpg) and field goal percentage (.434) and is second in scoring (9.4 ppg). Freshman guard Charise Holloway leads Arizona in 3-pointers made and attempted (25-of-97) and is fourth in scoring (6.7 ppg). Sophomore guard Malena Washington is second in assists (2.1 apg) while pitching in 7.1 points per outing.

I think Brecca has shown a lot of improvement this year. She looks in control with the ball, finds open shooters.
 
Tied up at the half. Buffs made a couple good runs, but Arizona answered each time. We still seem more in control of the game than the cats though
 
Well, it's all tied at 28 at the half.

Buff's went out to a quick 9-3 lead, immediately lost it, and since then it's been the Buff's with small leads that go away. 3 straight (???) turnovers late in the half didn't help.

Lexy Kresl left the game limping with around 4 minutes left in the half. They just interviewed Coach Lappe, and she thought Ms. Kresl would be able to play in the 2nd half.
 
I know the women have had a tough year too, but watching how they play together compared to our men's team. .. sharp cuts, give n go, some pretty nice passes and assists, always looking for each other

I've noticed that also the last few games; I guess makes sense for a freshman- but still good to see. Hopefully the improvement will continue, and with the incoming freshmen next year will give the Buff's very strong point guard play in the years to come!

Terrible offensive foul called against Jamee Swan as she stood there on a screen. 3rd foul on her. (Typical HORRIBLE Pac 12 officiating all night, and the Buffs are getting scr***d on most of them.)
 
Interesting the Buffs have gone to a zone periodically this half, which they've seldom been used this year. Seems to be working pretty well.

Buffs up 47-41 with ~8 minutes left.

Zone has really reduced how much Arizona is getting to the line

Buffs DO finish strong. Get the win 66 - 51!

Way to keep fighting. The backdoor play worked great in the 2nd half, as did the zone. Jen Reese and Jamee Swan with great scoring in the 2nd half. Props also to Lexy Kresl and Brecca Thomas. They were pressured full court by their defender all game, and only had 1 and 2 turnovers, respectively.

I think the new coach hired this season to coach the point guards has made a huge difference. Jamie Carey was one of the best ballers in Colorado when she was in high school and went on to be PAC 10 FOY at Stanford. A few years lost to concussion issues then she transferred to Texas and finished her college career. Then some time in the WNBA as a point guard followed by some time with USA Basketball and high school coaching.

If you listened to Lexy's senior night speech, she gave Jamie great kudos for mentoring her and helping her significantly improve all aspects of her game. I'm very hopeful for next season. As you say, Brecca shows real improvement from earlier in the season. And WBB has another potentially good PG coming in next year in Kennedy Leonard. So with Jamie coaching them up, we may finally get over the PG woes on the WBB team.
 
Nice job by the Buffs of taking advantage of some of the weaknesses of the Wildcats. Arizona can't score from the perimeter and thus the zone made it even more difficult for them and at the same time kept some of the CU players from getting into more foul trouble. At the other end the hand-offs really led to a lot of high percentage shots for CU.
 
Road wins are always fantastic, no matter who it's against. Conference road wins even more so. Looks like we're headed for the 9 seed. Irrelevant if we move up to 8 anyway, same opponent (Wazzu). Long day, but that's how I'm seeing it.
