The Buffs hope to get a 2nd straight Pac 12 win in a row in the back end of a home and away 2 game series against Utah this afternoon in Salt Lake City. They're also going for their 1st road win since November 25th, when they beat DU in Denver. (That is also their only road win so far this year.)

Game recap from Wednesday's overtime win over the Utes in Boulder- http://www.cubuffs.com/ViewArticle.dbml?SPSID=3910&SPID=258&DB_LANG=C&DB_OEM_ID=600&ATCLID=209849396

cubuffs.com preview of todays game- http://www.cubuffs.com/ViewArticle.dbml?DB_OEM_ID=600&ATCLID=209853726

A little bit about the Utes from that preview:

"...
Utah is 6-10 overall and looking for its first Pac-12 Conference win of the season. The Utes have dropped their last five and six of their last eight. Utah scored its second highest point total of the season in the 77-72 loss to Colorado on Jan. 11. Prior to that game the Utes had averaged just 45.5 points over their first four league contests. Overall the Utes average 56.4 points per game while hitting 38 percent from the field and 69 percent from the free throw line. Defensively, Utah is allowing its opponents just 58.2 points per game and 36 percent shooting, both numbers ranking third in the Pac-12. The 77 points given up to Colorado was Utah’s second-highest total of the season.

Senior forward Taryn Wicijowski leads Utah with a season double-double at 15.6 points and 10.4 rebounds per game, numbers that both rank in the top 10 in the Pac-12. She is coming off a 29-point, 14-rebound performance in the first game against Colorado. Freshman forward Tanaeya Boclair is second on the team in scoring at 9.1 points per game, hitting 43 percent from the floor. Junior guard Danielle Rodriguez tops the Utes and ranks seventh in the Pac-12 in assists at 4.2 per game while pitching in 7.3 points and 4.7 rebounds per contest. Sophomore guard Paige Crozon averages just under seven points per game and has made 20 3-point field goals on 36 percent beyond the arc.

14-11 Buffs. TO Buffs. They had it up to 8-0 with good shooting and Utah being VERY cold. Utah has started making some shots, and the Buffs have had turnovers 3 of last 4 possessions.

21-19 Buffs with ~6 minutes left in the half. They went stone cold for awhile (and the afore mentioned turnovers), but Swan has hit 2 mid range jumpers in a row, and then Kresl hit a 3.

27-24 Buffs at the half. Neither side shooting that well. Wish the Buffs wouldn't always be content with mid-range jump shots. They seldom even test the inside.

40-35 Buffs with ~12 minutes left after an exchange of 3's (Buff's was from Huggins).

Buffs win 73-54.

Solid win by the Buffs- now go get the Cougs and Dawgs on the road!

Ms. Kresl looking awesome right now for the Buffs- confident floor leader, solid defense and shooting well.

Big difference between Wednesday nights game and this one .... the Buffs defense figured out how to shut Utah #11 (don't even want to try to spell her name) down. It was a good team effort on defense and they continued with the good offensive performance. I wish Lexy Kresl had another year to play. She has been playing really well the past few games. She herself has said that she wishes she could get another year of coaching by Jamie Carey. Sounds like that was a terrific hire by Lappe.

That was the difference in the game. A big road win like this should give the Buffs confidence. #11 is in her 6th year and is a smart player but CU figured out how to shut her down today. She is who kept Utah in the game Wednesday. Happy Buffs on the flight home.

One statistical question that comes up when looking at this game's stats- I wonder if there's been many/ any CU games with better team free throw shooting, both by the Buffs themselves, and also when combined with the opponent?
Looks like the Buffs were 13-14 (92.9%) from the line, and Utah was 12-14, so a combined 89.3% between the two teams. Great job by both teams in that area.

This game cut down turnovers and another excellent showing from Lexy. Smart passes (and no moving screens), and this is a great offense.

Nice win. Not only a large margin in the road, but also a methodical one one. Under 10 turnovers for the game by the Buffs plus keeping the Utes off the boards while taking advantage of open looks from behind the arc. Ten Buffs got at least 10 minutes playing time in the game and all made some sort of contribution. Kresl seemed to get the shooting show started, but others jumped on the bandwagon and it meant the Buffs weren't dependent on one or two players to score.

On the other hand, let's be honest about Utah there's a reason they have lost all of their conference games. This means if CU is going to have more success in conference play they'll have to figure out how to defend the athletic perimeter players that have given them such trouble this season. It'll be interesting to see how they perform next weekend in the State of Washington.
