The Buffs look to improve on their two game winning streak (both against Utah) as they hit the road once again to play the Huskies in Seattle tonight. (The Dawgs are receiving Top 25 votes in both the AP (#28) and Coaches (#31) polls.)

cubuffs.com preview of todays game- http://www.cubuffs.com/ViewArticle.dbml?DB_OEM_ID=600&ATCLID=209860309

A little bit about Washington from that preview:

"...
Little of what Washington does would be possible without (sophomore 5-8 guard Kelsey) Plum, though; she is versatile and frighteningly efficient — she shoots 48 percent from the field, 43 percent from deep and 90 percent from the free-throw line. She has topped 30 points seven times this season, 40 points once, and doesn’t rely on any single facet of her game. In that 35-point outburst last season against the Buffs, Plum hit just three of her nine attempts from beyond the arc but went an unreal 18-of-19 at the free-throw line.
...

The Huskies (14-4, 3-3) can get scoring from anywhere in their starting lineup, though, even from forward Aminah Williams, whose offensive game is straight out of the Tyson Chandler mold — good screens, hard rolls to the rim and putbacks. Williams is a walking double-double and, with 10.2 boards per game, is second in the Pac-12 in rebounding. She pulls in three offensive rebounds a game, and the importance of that can’t be overstated — that’s three extra possessions every game for the conference’s best offense.

Tonight we'll begin to find out if the Buffs really have improved since the beginning of conference play. UDub is going to be a much bigger challenge than Utah. Plum is amazing in that she isn't athletic per se, but knows how to score - a bit like Larry Bird. CU will most likely use a number of players on her in the game.

Recently CU has cut down on the silly turnovers, rebounded well and gotten solid scoring from Lexy Kresl. They need to add to that by getting consistent scoring from the likes of Swan and Smith.

Re turnovers, I'll be interested to see if the Huskies employ a press, and how the Buffs handle it if they do. In the Buff's 5 game losing streak right before the wins against Utah, I believe all 5 opponents were employing a serious full-court press after almost all of their made baskets, and it led to some ugly turnovers.

All kinds of offense so far on both sides. Buffs rebounding well on the offensive boards. 11-10 Wash. at 1st media timeout.

Buffs offense generally flowing beautifully tonight. Washington countering with hot 3 point shooting (5-12). CU up 28-24 with 7:19 left in the half.

Does Washington usually put up 3pt shots at this rate? 19 or their 32 attempts have been from 3.

42-35 Buffs at the half, in spite of some head scratching officiating definitely not going the Buffs way most of the time. (Swan, Reese, Smith and Correal with 2 fouls. Hopefully it doesn't become become a factor in the 2nd half.)

Jamee Swan looking great with 15 points and 7 boards at the half- playing quick, energetic and finishing great around the basket. In general, Buffs owning the boards and inside. (Buffs lead 20-6 in points in the paint.)

Per season stats (https://admin.xosn.com/pdf9/2567752.pdf?DB_OEM_ID=30200& ), looks like they average ~23 3 pt. attempts per game, or ~37% of their total shots, so this is more than normal. Hopefully it's the Buff's greater size and good defense forcing them out.

Edit- be interesting to see if their coach adjusts their attack based on the number of 3's they took that half. It doesn't look like their bigs have done much to attack yet, and don't know if that's part of their skillset. Assume we may see their star guards try to drive more?

Down to a 1 point game. TO CU with it 46-45 CU.

3 turnovers in a row for CU, but 2 were kind of bad luck as the Buffs were in good position driving past their Husky defenders, but the defenders were able to knock the ball off the Buff legs out of bounds.

Buffs went down by 4, but then have come storming back with a big run. Up 62-54 at a media timeout with ~11 minutes left. Kresl now the leading Buff scorer with 20, probably 14 or so in the 2nd half already.

Seems weird that Washington is shooting mostly jump shots while CU is going into the paint... but Washington has taken 15 FTs to the Buffs 8. Usually doesn't go like that. Especially not against the home team.

A few mystifying foul calls, most going against the Buffs. 66-62 CU.

66-64 CU with ~7:30 left; media TO. Buffs close on many shots but gone a little cold. I'd like to see them go inside more, either by pass or drive.

Now its 76-73 Washington at the last media TO- 3:46 left. Very entertaining game, with both offenses going well. Buffs have just gone A LITTLE cold, and Washington is scoring almost every time down the court.

78-77 UDub- TO to them with 1:50 left and they have the ball.

Same score- now 1:24 left and Buffs with the ball. CU gotten lucky with Washington's 90% free throw shooter is 3-7 tonight.

Now Washington ball- same score with 1 minute left. Buffs did NOT take a good shot on their last possession.

83-82 UDub with 10 seconds left and their ball after J. Swan with a clutch 3 to give the Buffs at least a slight hope.

Edit- then, they foul, and UDub makes one of two. BUT, the ball on the rebound may have gone off the Buff. 9 seconds left. Referees reviewing at the monitor. They give it to Washington.

Darn- Buffs lose 85-82.

Still, a good performance by the Buffs tonight. Shake it off and get the Cougars in a couple days.

At least they came out strong to open the game and held a lead until late. Maybe that freshman point guard will be the spark we need next year.

Kudos to the Buffs for coming out strong and for the most part keeping the pressure on the Huskies on their home court. From the get go CU was playing with poise and confidence on offense and in the first half limited UDub at the rim. CU responded to almost every run Washington made and didn't seem to be slowed down by foul trouble with Jen Reece and Haley Smith.

Once again, the issue the Buffs had defensively was inability to prevent dribble penetration by Washington's guards and in the second half this became a serious issue. There were periods of time when the Davis and Plum were getting to the rim and drawing fouls. Until CU can limit this they will be suspect on defense.

CU did many things very well (rebounding, responding to the opposition's runs., etc.) but obviously not enough to get the win. That's the next step in games like this - find a way in the last minutes to take control and not be reliant on a last second shot or a screw up by the opposition.

CU has improved since the first half of the UCLA game, but they obviously aren't over the hump yet. You've got to love their attitude on the court and confidence. They still need to cut down on the silly turnovers - although they are much better than earlier this season. And if they can get to the point where they get a few more stops when they have a lead they'll be in good shape.

Lexy has been hitting a ton of key shots both from long range and at the rim. Jamee is an amazing athlete with good passing skills and the ability to affect a game on both ends. Haley has become a good mid-range shooter. Jen has an amazing mid-range game as well. Individually the Buffs have some weapons.
