So the women try to get their best win of the year as they face off against the Florida Gators this (Saturday) evening at the Keg. (Looks like in the current NCAA poll, Florida is receiving 6 votes, which makes them unofficially the 34th ranked team in the country.)

About the Gators win over Ball State last night (per the http://www.cubuffs.com/ViewArticle.dbml?DB_OEM_ID=600&ATCLID=210537418 article )-

"
In Friday night’s first game, Florida (4-1) had five players in double figures, topped by Haley Lorenzen’s 20 points. The Gators pulled away in the final 2 minutes at the free throw line. Florida finished the game at 88.5 percent (23-of-26) from the foul line, including 90 percent (9-of-10) in the second half.

1st media TO, Buffs down 4-8. CU cold as ice so far. Lots of turnovers by both teams partially due to a frenetic pace.

12-6 and the defense is playing lights out. Drawing a bunch of charges. Swan has drawn 3.

Well, that changed. Gave up 21 points in the 1st quarter.

Down 21-8 going into the 2nd.

Oh boy, CU is completely intimidated, missing open looks, turning the ball over and getting hammered on the boards. Florida is athletic and CU is mentally out of its.

Down 8-21 at the end of the 1st quarter.

Media TO in 2nd quarter, Buffs making a run at it down 25-30. Good minutes from Bri Watts on D and Kennedy with steals and scores.

Buffs down at the half 33-39. They're shooting themselves in the foot with silly turnovers and missed open shots. Too often missed shot by CU leads to an easy basket by Florida.

When the Buffs were making a run in the 2nd quarter they had all 3 freshmen in the game.

Very frustrating as Buffs make a run only to hurt themselves with aTO or misused shot. Down by 6 at the media TO.

Game appears to be over as CU completely fell apart over the last 4 minutes of the 3rd quarter and are down 48-61.

Buffs were non-competitive the last seven minutes or so. They looked worn out mentally and physically. Having a short bench doesn't help and also doesn't bode well for the rest of the season.

What sticks in my mind about this game is the number of points Florida got in transition after a missed CU shot. And the shots CU was missing weren't bad ones, they were just missing ones that one night before they would have made. There were other issues as well, but I would bet that the points scored by Florida in transition were major reason why CU could never really get themselves back into the game.

Unfortunately I think that last night we saw a preview of what conference games will be like for the WBB Buffs this year. The freshmen are talented but they got beat by players with both the talent and the experience. For many minutes, CU had 3 freshmen on the floor. Florida doesn't even have 3 freshmen on their roster! I hope that the coaches learn pretty quick that they need to have more than 11 players on the team. One transfer sitting out, 1 freshman out for the year with an ACL, and you only have 9 players max. Take another one out of the rotation with a possible concussion and you are down to relying on the players who should be on the end of the bench.

Florida played exactly like the team Jamie Carey described in the club room. She also said the Gators were 12 deep. It's going to be a long season.

Bri Watts game them so good defensive minutes and she sparked the team during that run, but it didn't last any longer than she did. She was so winded when she asked to be taken out of the game.

Zoe Beard-Fails wasn't even on the bench. Injuries can't be helped but why do we not have more players than this.

We shoot our shooting percent average from the first four games we win. Missed a lot of open shots and lay-ups. No need to panic or write off the season, those can be fixed.

The team has no depth. The team doesn't have a lot of size. The team was no that good last year. We play 3 freshmen because we have to, and, yes they have talent. Pac 12 players are much bigger and stronger than our players.

I'm being realistic.

2 of the freshman would start or play significant minutes on any team in the conference and Swan is a potential 1st or 2nd team PAC 12 player. I'm not saying they'll finish top 3 in the conference but they'll compete and surprise some people. No doubt more depth would be nice.

- Yes, and in the past I think I've been a bit unrealistic by over rating the potential of the team.
With the short bench and several weak recruiting classes CU will struggle in conference play. They can't afford any injures or foul problems, period.
My guess is that the team will frequently get warn down during conference play, especially late in the season.

I've been extolling the ability of both Kennedy Leonard and Alexis Robinson since they verbally committed. I think both will go down as all-time greats in CU history by the time they graduate. But right now they are still freshmen with a long season ahead. So far both have had at least one "off" game. Alexis struggled last night and Kennedy the night before. Once conference play hits they will be known commodities by the opposition and they'll have to step up. It's putting a lot of pressure on them to carry the team.

Jamee has as much talent as any player to wear a CU history, and she is a bit inconsistent. It doesn't help that she has to carry so much of the load offensively around the basket. She has to be fantastic on a regular basis, if she isn't on her game the team is really in trouble.

Beyond individuals the issue of turnovers and inconsistent defense are still there - as they were the last two season. For this team to have shot at the WNIT they need to figure both of those issues out.

I hope they have their heads on straight when they go up to Fort Collins Wednesday night as CSU has been close in recent seasons and as always will have a chip on their shoulder.

Mark I don't argue that the margin for error come conference play will be very narrow. However, I'm not sure about how "off" Leonards game was against UMass; I'll take 6 assists, 3 steals a couple boards and a block as a pretty decent outing (and a 2-1 assist/to ratio). Granted not her best shooting night but you're going to have those nights, showed maturity by recognizing that and not pressing. And Robinson has brought energy, rebounding and solid D to every game even if shooting was off

One of the constants with CU's major sports right now is the inability to consistently bring in significant numbers of high level recruits. I pretty much understand it with football but I don't understand it with either of the BBall programs. Just don't get it. The state of Colorado is pretty popular/interesting in reality and in myth with the young folks, and Tad and Linda are not psychos or ogres. So I don't get what gives.

Jamee can not do it all in the post. She was out of this world on Friday and had a difficult time scoring on Saturday.

Pac 12 teams will key on Swan, Leonard and Robinson. It's my opinion the other players can't beat the Pac 12 teams. I hope they prove me wrong.

Right after I posted this I thought of Steve Carrell saying "that's what she said"…..Holy crap.

There are getting to be many good 6'4" and 6'5" post players now in WBB. The really great ones are few and far between though. Look at South Carolina and how fast that turn-around has happened. Linda needs to be scouring the country for bigs.
