A little bit about the Trojans from that preview:

Southern California is 9-5 overall and 1-2 in the Pac-12. The Trojans have lost three of their last four, splitting last weekend’s games against the Oregon schools at home. Friday’s game will be USC’s first road contest in over a month as the Trojans played their last seven at home. USC averages 75.7 points per game ranking fourth in the Pac-12. The Trojans shoot 45 percent from the field and 66 percent from the foul line. USC gives up 67.1 points per outing while allowing opponents to shoot 42 percent. The Trojans lead the Pac-12 in steals at 11.2 per game.


USC sports a balanced scoring attack with four players in double figures. Senior forward Alexyz Vaioletama leads the Trojans at 12.8 points and 6.6 rebounds per game and ranks eighth in the Pac-12 in field goal accuracy at 54.3 percent. Freshman guard McKenzie Calvert is averaging 11.6 points per game and hitting 44 percent from 3-point range. Senior forward Kaneisha Horn and junior guard Brianna Barrett are both at 10.1 points per game. Horn is USC’s second leading rebounder at 6.5 an outing. Barrett tops the Trojans in both assists (66) and steals (36), ranking in the top six in the Pac-12 in both categories.


Cynthia Cooper is in her second year as head coach of USC with a record of 31-18. She is in her 10th year as a collegiate head coach with a record of 181-124.

Jen Reese not starting due to severe cold or bronchitis. Sounds like she might still play. Game has started.
 
Buffs already have 4 turnovers in just a few minutes to start the game
 
Buffs down 20-8 with 11 minutes left, now 7 turnovers against them.
 
34-20 at the last media timeout of the half. Buffs offense waking up; unfortunately, so has the USC 3 ball.
 
Tough half for the Buffs, down 40-27. The Buffs did score I believe the last 6 points, so hopefully will get some momentum from that.
 
Buffs offense looking much better now, but they aren't getting enough defensive stops. Still in it though- 58-47 USC with ~12 minutes left.
 
73-58 with ~3:30 left. Too bad the Buffs started so badly in this one. It could have been a coin flip game otherwise.

As cmgoods indicated in earlier posts, turnovers have been the main killer- the Buffs down 17-6 in that category. Making it even worse, 10 of the turnovers have been steals, often leading to easy and/ or fastbreak USC buckets.

Fouls have been the other killer (where's the home court advantage?). USC actually has the same number of field goals made as the Buffs, but are 19-25 in free throws vs. the Buffs 5-9.

19 turnovers now and that's been the story of this game
 
Lappe needs to swallow her pride and teach this team to play zone defense. CU does not have athletic guards to keep up with the caliber of opposing guards in the Pac-12. This team does not have a single point guard. They went all in on some top level recruits and missed on every single one. Lappe better be recruiting junior-college guards hard because next year it's just Brecca Thomas!!!

I feel bad for Kresl. She's had to switch positions. She is playing hurt. She plays 30+ minutes a game. She gets to chase the opposing teams guards all over they floor because her coach is too stubborn to make a change in defensive philosophies for one season.
 
In my opinion, we need a new head women's basketball coach. It's sad because she is a great Buff and this was her dream job. But the team looks awful. And over the past two years, the team has regressed. We will be battling for 11th place and we will be lucky to win one single Pac 12 game. Can anyone really see any difference from the results under the previous coaching staff?

Maybe she will get lucky and get another year while the focus remains on football? I'm sure there are a bunch of great candidates out there. Not sure how much RG cares about womens basketball attendance. But won't it be pretty hard to get the C-unit and other fans in the arena with this product?

Next year it's not just Brecca available at the point. Kennedy Leonard and perhaps Alexis Robinson will be capable at that position. Leonard looks to be a fantastic point guard prospect and will most likely get major minutes immediately. She is versatile and thus could play at the same time as Brecca. Currently she averaging close to 18 points and 8 assists per game. She started at point guard on one of the top club teams in the country. Robinson is also considered a combo guard, but my guess is she'll be more of a shooting guard at CU than a point guard. Where I am advocating for the Buffs to go after a juco player is at the 2 guard as they really need to increase their athleticism to be competitive in conference play. Also, they should consider looking for a juco post player who can take defend and be at least a threat to score. This would take some pressure off of Jamee to do it all.

I have not given up on Lappe. I do think she should switch to the zone with the players they have this year. However, I remember Coach Barry stubbornly sticking with the player to player defense and that may be drilled in to Lappe's mind.

We have a good recruiting class coming in and hopefully they will bring in somebody on the scholarship that Desiree Harris' departure left open.
 
WBB can have 15 scholarships, I believe. Lappe right now has 12 players. Three are seniors. So if there are no other changes than the 3 seniors graduating and the 4 signed freshmen joining the team, they will start next fall with 13 players, still 2 short of the scholarship max. So there should be room if they can find JUCO or fifth year senior transfers to provide upper class depth.
