RENO, Nev.—The Colorado women's basketball team faces its first road tests of the season at the Nevada Nuggets Classic. The Buffaloes will open the holiday tournament on Friday against Nevada, before facing Utah State on Sunday.
"I think we are excited to have the opportunity to go on the road," head coach JR Payne noted. "Our preparation might be a little different since it is a different gym. For us, we try to keep things the same as we would at home. We have the same type of practices. The same type of shoot-a-rounds. We try to eat the same type of food when possible. We are excited for the opportunity to go out on this trip."
The Buffs went 3-1 on the road last season in non-conference play, with two of the wins coming at Colorado State and Air Force. The team's only non-conference road blemish was its overtime loss at North Carolina.
...
The Buffs have shot just 38.0 percent from the field in its first three games but went 30-of-64 (46.9 percent) in the win over North Carolina. CU has dominated the glass in the early season, ranking 29th in the NCAA with 46.3 rebounds per game. Colorado has outrebounded its opponents by an average of 10.3 rebounds per game, leading to 18.3 second-chance points per game.
The series with the Wolf Pack is tied at a game apiece. The two teams have not met since the 2006-07 season. The Buffs won that matchup, 80-60, in Boulder. CU's last trip to Reno resulted in a 69-59 loss in 2004.
UNR (1-2) returns four letterwinners from last season and added seven newcomers to its roster. The Wolf Pack stunned the Mountain West Conference last season, advancing to the MWC Tournament Championship game as the No. 7 seed.
Nevada picked up its first win of the season at Long Beach State last Sunday. The Wolf Pack got 20 points from Camariah King in the 76-67 win. Jade Redmond, Essence Booker and Da'Ja Hamilton also hit double figures.
Friday's game is set for a 3 p.m. MT start. Fans can listen to the Buffs all season long on AM 630 (KHOW)
