(Sorry for posting this thread so early, but I may have bad to non-existent internet starting tomorrow, so figure I'd create this when I know I can.)

Women's basketball (15-4 overall, 6-2 in conference play) head back home for what always seems to be a big series hosting the L.A. schools. 1st off is a Friday evening game against the #9 ranked UCLA Bruins (17-3, 6-2), followed up by a Sunday noon matinee vs. the USC Trojans (15-4, 5-3).

Both games are scheduled to be shown on the Pac 12 Network. (More info and links near the bottom of this post.)

Note - As I type this (1/22/23- before any Sunday games are reflected), CU was #22 in the Net rankings, while UCLA is #28 and USC #32. Edit - In more current rankings (as of 1/23), the Buffs are still at #22 after the Stanford loss, while UCLA and USC have moved up a little, to #27 and 29, respectively.

Go Buffs!!!

Preview (From yesterday) for this weekend's games, including this evening's big and fun home challenge against the #8 Bruins-

BOULDER – The basketball season treks on for the No. 25 Colorado Buffaloes who welcome the Southern California contingency to the CU Events Center this weekend.

Colorado (15-4, 6-2 Pac-12) will prepare to take on No. 8 UCLA (17-3, 6-2 Pac-12) and Southern California (15-4, 5-3 Pac-12) on Friday (7 p.m. MT) and Sunday (Noon). The Buffs have beaten the last two ranked opponents who have come to Boulder and have won their last 11 games inside the Events Center.

"I think we're confident wherever we play," head coach JR Payne noted. "Every team has an advantage when they play at home from just a comfortability standpoint. You get to sleep in your own bed, eat your own food and you're not in and out of hotels. I do think it adds a level of comfort at home. We want to win every game, but we especially want to make sure that we're winning in front of our home crowd."

The Buffs are looking to rebound from a loss to then-No. 4 Stanford last Sunday. The Buffaloes got out to a slow start in the first quarter and trailed 18-8 after the first ten minutes. Colorado got back on track in the final three quarters, playing the Cardinal to a three-point game the rest of the afternoon.

"We need to have a more aggressive mindset from the beginning," Payne explained. "We need to have better all-around execution. These teams [in the Pac-12] are too good to have a slow start. We've got to have great warmups and just be focused and ready to battle from the jump."

CU has turned to its big four in the lineup in the Pac-12 season. The Buffs' bench was averaging 22.4 points per game in the non-conference season but has seen that production dip to 12.6 points per in across Pac-12 play. Colorado totaled just one point, a free throw, off the bench at Stanford. It was the fewest bench points for Payne's squad since the 2019-20 season.

"I think we need to get more productivity and more consistent minutes [from our depth players]," Payne added. "They [Stanford] were so big that there were only certain lineups that we thought could match that size. We do have good depth. We do have people that can come in and contribute and we need to be able to utilize that to be effective down the stretch."

Colorado won both of its last meetings against UCLA and USC on the road last season. Friday and Sunday's games are the only two meetings between the Buffs and the Los Angeles schools this season. Both matchups this weekend will be televised on the Pac-12 Networks (Jenny Cavnar, Kami Carmann Snyder).

The games will also be carried across the Colorado Radio Network, the Varsity app and CUBuffs.com/listen. Pregame coverage will start 30 minutes before tipoff.

Friday's game is the Buffs' annual Play4Kay game. The Bruins and Buffs will take part in a pregame ceremony that includes five honorary starters, each of who have been affected by Cancer. The honorary starters will join CU's starting lineup and walk out together with starting lineups.

On Sunday the CU Athletic Department will celebrate National Girls and Women in Sports Day. The Northwest entrance to the CU Events Center will open at 10 a.m., and the concourse will feature stations that will showcase women's athletics. Parents will need to purchase a ticket, kids 12 and under will get a free ticket upon check-in/registration https://app.cubuffs.com/NGWSD2023

got to give it to this team. they really are playing well. It must be a huge advantage having point guards like Sherrod and Wetta, No rest for the other team from pressure and great defense. Also it is so nice to have 2 post players that can score again. AV has to stay out of foul trouble. it llooks like J.R. is building something.

Great game. Great to beat ucla.

I wish some of the men talked like Q Miller:

“I think that we’re proving to teams that like we really can compete with anybody, especially on our home floor. It’s a pride thing and we own what we wear across our chest. So we really take it personal when teams try to show up and try to win against us on our court. Like, it’s just not something we’re going for.”

This team has the mindset and confidence that they can win every game on the schedule.

In this week's Bracketology, Charlie Creme has us as a 7 seed, going to Columbus, Ohio. If that's where we go, I'm there.

Last team in is Marquette.

Last night's game was so much fun! Go Buffs!

BOULDER – For the second time this season, the No. 25 Colorado Buffaloes knocked off the No. 8 team in the country. The UCLA Bruins were the victims this time, with the Buffs prevailing on a last-second shot in overtime, 73-70.

"First of all, thanks to the huge crowd that came out tonight," head coach JR Payne expressed. "Hopefully, we'll continue to grow [in size]. Also, unbelievably proud of our ballclub tonight. So many different people stepped up in the first half. We had some foul trouble in the first half. Other people came in, gave great minutes, executed down the stretch and executed new plays and new positions. Huge shots, Kindyll that shot was just one of the biggest shots that we've seen all year, and I'm just so proud of Kin. She's been working on her game and putting in that time and has gotten so much confidence. I'm unbelievably proud of our team tonight. And I just think it was a great night."

Sophomore Kindyll Wetta hit her first-ever game-winning shot with 1.9 seconds left in overtime sending the crowd of 2,227 into a frenzy. The win was the Buffs' 12th straight at the CUEC and the team's third against a top-15 team this season.

"I've never made a game-winning shot," Wetta said after the win. "Not even in middle school or high school, but tonight I mean, it felt good. I knew that I was probably in the open. I saw them sag early, so I was ready to shoot."

Colorado (16-4, 7-2 Pac-12) erased a four-point third-quarter deficit and outscored UCLA 45-37 in the second half and overtime. Seniors Quay Miller and Jaylyn Sherrod carried a bulk of the scoring load for CU. Miller closed the night with her third double-double of the season, totaling 18 points and 12 rebounds. Sherrod led all scorers with 20 points and handed out six assists, becoming the eighth CU player to join the 400-assist club.

Wetta closed with 13 points, hitting 6-of-7 shots and six assists. Aaronette Vonleh, who fouled out in the first minute of overtime, rounded out CU's top scorers with 11 points.
UCLA (17-4, 6-3 Pac-12) was led by Londynn Jones with 14 points off the bench. The Bruins' standout guard duo of Charisma Osborne and Camryn Brown was limited to just 14 combined points. The Buffs held Osborn to just 3-for-16 shooting, while Brown went 1-for-2 from the field.

"They're two of the better guards in the conference [Osborne and Brown] and we knew that," Payne stated. " With a lot of lead changes, both teams were really trying to be detailed and specific about getting a shot and those two are both very capable of making shots. I'm not surprised they took so many shots, because they're both really good. But again, I think our deep perimeter defense was exceptional. There were times that we had to switch, Quay had to switch out, she's guarding Osborne, which is a tough thing to do as a post and did a really good job."

Quotes
JR Payne
ON THE ENDING PLAY -
"We knew that we were trying to hit something downhill and trying to be aggressive to the basket, but we had different people in different spots. A shooter here, maybe a kickback there. But I think we made the right play. Jaylyn penetrated, the defense collapsed. Kindyll was hands and feet ready to knock it down."

ON COLORADO POINT GUARDS - "We're in a conference with a lot of really good guards and I would take those two [Sherrod and Wetta] over any point guard in our conference. They're really tough. They're resilient. They like to defend. They're confident offensively. They're unselfish. They lead. I think both of them were just incredible. Throughout the game, toughness was keeping everyone together, communicating, making sure we all knew what we were in. I'm very, very proud that they're Buffs."

ON BRINGING IN A CROWD AGAIN - "We just need to continue to get the word out. People that come and watch us play love watching us play. It is fun basketball, it is good basketball. And so, we just need to continue to get the word out and get more and more people here because the more people come, the more energy in the building and it just is going to keep snowballing in a great direction."

Box score - https://cubuffs.com/sports/womens-basketball/stats/2022-23/ucla/boxscore/16131

Does a moderately cold, cloudy, wintry day help or hurt the crowd compared to if it were sunny and pushing 50 on a Sunday? I hope the word is getting out and the fans show up, this team deserves the in-person support, particularly after the big win.

USC finishes the first quarter with a 0-10 run. Their bigs blocked 3-4 shots during that stretch. Buffs trailing 9-14.

They're the best team I have seen the Buffs play. They are the only team that beat Stanford this year
