Wish only the best to the lacrosse team as they travel across the country this week to open the season, facing off against the Wolverines (now coached by a former Buff assistant) in Jacksonville Florida on Friday afternoon (3:00 PM MT), and then the #5 Gators in Gainesville on Sunday at 10:00 AM MT!

Hope a northern Florida Buff fan or two can make it to one or both of the games!

BOULDER — The 17th-rated Colorado lacrosse team opens its fifth season on Friday, February 9, with a neutral site contest against Michigan at Episcopal School in Jacksonville, Fla. Then on Sunday, Feb. 11, the Buffs will square-off against No. 5 Florida in Gainesville, Fla.

HOW TO WATCH: The game against Michigan will not be streamed, but live stats will be available at CUBuffs.com. Live stats and a live stream will be available for the contest against Florida with links at CUBuffs.com.

ABOUT THE BUFFS: Colorado finished the 2017 campaign with a 16-4 record, setting a school record for wins in a single season. The Buffs also earned a second-place finish in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation with a 7-1 mark.

The Buffs return seven of its 12 starters from last season, most notably senior Darby Kiernan, who led the Buffs with 77 points. The IWCLA Third Team All-American tallied a team-best 52 goals and added 22 assists. She led CU with 120 draw controls, which was 11th in the NCAA. CU also returns senior Sarah Brown, an IWLCA Second Team All-American, who recorded a team-best and CU single-season record 33 caused turnovers. She added 41 draw controls and 39 ground balls.

ABOUT MICHGAN: The Wolverines recorded a 5-12 overall record in 2017 and were 1-5 in Big Ten play. UM lost its top six scorers from the season, but does bring back Bianca Brueckner, a 12-point scorer from last season.
...

ABOUT FLORIDA: The Gators are ranked fifth in the IWLCA Preseason Poll, and for good reason. They finished the 2017 season with a 17-3 record. In the second round of the NCAA Tournament (after a bye in round one), UF fell to Southern California.

While Florida graduated its top player from the 2017 season, Mollie Stevens, the Gators bring back a great deal of depth. Three of their top five scorers return and recorded at least 50 points. Lindsey Ronbeck was second to Stevens on the team last year with 73 points (Stevens had 75). Ronbeck also scored 53 goals and added 20 assists.

Article on the Buff's win (Congrats again to the team, and to Ms. Stinson (with I'm sure huge assist from the team) for setting the CU record for most individual goals in a game!)-

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – With the jersey of fallen teammate Julia Sarcona hanging on the Colorado sideline and her memory weighing heavy on their hearts, the Buffaloes opened the 2018 season with an emotional 20-10 win over the Michigan Wolverines on Friday night at Episcopal School in Jacksonville, Fla.

Junior Miranda Stinson led the way for the 17th-ranked Buffs, scoring a school-record seven goals, while senior Darby Kiernan tied a career-best five goals and dominated draws.
...

NOTABLE:
  • CU never trailed in the game, despite Michigan tying the score three times
  • CU has won its last three season openers, and improves to 4-1 all-time
  • CU improves to 3-0 all-time against Michigan
  • Miranda Stinson's seven goals are a school record.
  • Three Buffs earned their first career start: junior Sophia Castillo and freshmen Sadie Grozier and Devon Bayer.
  • Miranda Stinson scored seven goals, setting a CU single-game record. The previous record had been five, which had been done 14 times in the previous four seasons.
  • Samantha Nemirov recorded a career high three goals and four points.
  • Sophia Gambitsky earned her second career win in as many starts.
...

UP NEXT: Colorado will head to Gainesville, Fla. for a matchup against No. 5 Florida at 10 a.m./12 p.m. Sunday. The game is Florida's season opener, while CU holds a 1-0 record.

QUOTEABLE:
Head Coach Ann Elliott
On Darby Kiernan and Miranda Stinson's 12-combined goals

"It was our first game and a lot of emotions all around. I thought we came out pretty well. We had a couple of tough stretches and we had people step up and make plays. For us it's always about seven people doing their jobs. I think when we did that, Darby [Kiernan] and Miranda [Stinson] were able to find and create a lot of great opportunities and we finished them."

In what I'm sure is going to be a season filled with emotional heartfelt times, looks like Florida may be a strong one.

Didn't get to watch the game, but from the tweets- after being down 5-8 at the half, Buffs closed it down to a one goal difference (8-9), but then looks like the Gators took over to win by a 9-16 final. No disgrace losing against the #5 ranked team in their place. Now just need to shake this one off, as it's a relatively quick turnaround before the Buffs hit the road again for a Thursday game at Coach Elliott's alma mater, Northwestern.

Article (Not sure, but as I write this it may still have more added to it later.) - http://cubuffs.com/news/2018/2/11/lacrosse-buffs-fall-to-fifth-ranked-gators-16-9.aspx?path=wlax (Interesting the Buffs outshot the Gators, but sounds like their goalie had a great game.)

"
GAINSEVILLE, Fla. – Colorado battled hard against the fifth-ranked Gators, but Florida scored six consecutive goals in the second half to down the 17th-ranked Buffs by a final score of 16-9 on Sunday afternoon.
...

KEY STATISTICS: Colorado outshot Florida by a final tally of 34-28, but Florida goalie Hayley Hicklen stifled the Buffs', recording a career-high 14 saves. CU held a narrow edge in nearly every statistical category, winning the ground ball battle (28-25), the turnover battle (16-17), and leading the Gators in draw controls (14-13).
"

Congrats to Ms. Stinson!
