Assuming no last minute changes***, the Buffs (4-6, 2-5) continue conference play this weekend, hosting Cal (0-10, 0-6) on Friday afternoon starting at 3:00 PM MT, followed up by a Sunday noon matinee against consensus #1 ranked Stanford (10-0, 7-0).
(***After the Buff men had to postpone their game at Arizona in early December the day before it was scheduled, and then the women had to postpone their home game vs. ASU, I've been trying to wait until the visiting team (or whoever) tweets out they've taken off or arrived at the home team's location. I haven't seen Cal do this yet, but assume by now that, if either they or the Buffs had any known Covid-19 issues, something would have communicated by now. Of course both teams will, I assume, still have to pass gameday testing protocols.)

Video Coverage for both games is on the Pac 12 Networks. (See below for more detail.)

Go Buffs!!!

Note - As I type this, the NET rankings (https://www.ncaa.com/rankings/basketball-women/d1/ncaa-womens-basketball-net-rankings), which are, I believe, one of the major evaluation tools used for tournament selection purposes, have the Buffs at #70, while the Bears are at #292 and Cardinal #1.

BOULDER – Colorado women's basketball returns to the CU Events Center on Friday, hosting California (3:30 p.m. MT). The two-game homestand closes out with a matchup against the top team in the country, No. 1 Stanford on Sunday (Noon).

The Buffaloes have a bit of a short week, having already played once this week. CU played at Southern California on Monday, a game that was rescheduled from Sunday. Colorado got behind by 12 to the Trojans and got back to within two in the final two minutes, before coming up just short.

"It's hard because we have to have a really short memory," head coach JR Payne noted. "Every team in the league is so good. It requires so much focus and attention to detail in our preparation. We really can't dwell on anything for long. It was really disappointing to have chances and not be able to convert. I didn't think we performed very well for the first two or three quarters. To still have a chance at the end is great, but it also reminds us that you can't just show up for any team for just a half or even a quarter. That was disappointing but to be honest, we had to move on pretty quickly to Cal."

On paper, Friday's matchup heavily favors Colorado. CU enters the weekend with a 4-6 record and 2-5 in the Pac-12. Cal has yet to pick up a win this season, opening 0-10.

The numbers shift heavily in favor of Colorado as well too. The Buffs are averaging 66.9 points per game, while Cal sits 12th in the Pac-12 with just 47.1 points per game. The Golden Bears are getting outscored by almost 25 points a game this season and are fresh off a tough 59-point loss to Oregon. Cal has a limited rotation with four of its starting five playing more than 30 minutes per game.

Colorado isn't looking at the numbers though. The Buffs have been in similar situations. They have been the team that gets written off too soon. They know that the game is played on the hardwood and not on paper. Every game is a chance to make a new statement and the Buffs know they are going to get Cal's best punch.

"Cal does a great job of getting the most out of its players," Payne added. "They play hard. There is nothing about them that says they are defeated in any way shape or form. They play their hearts out and they're aggressive. They're fantastic on the glass. I have a tremendous amount of respect for their entire coaching staff."

Once Colorado gets past Friday, it can turn its attention to Sunday. Coach Payne and the Buffs will have a quick turnaround when No. 1 Stanford town. But do not let the one day of preparation fool anyone. CU will be ready.

Nobody has forgotten the two previous matchups with the Cardinal. The Buffs were within seconds of beating Stanford both games last season, losing by a combined 11 points, but even that is a bit misleading.

The Buffs' visit to Stanford last season was the first thriller, needing overtime to determine the winner. The No. 6 Stanford built its lead in the extra period, resulting in the eight-points win (76-68). The Cardinal came to Boulder as the No. 8 team in the AP rankings. Stanford led by 12 points before halftime and Buffs fought back to lead by five in the fourth quarter. The Cardinal hit a last-second-desperation 3 at the buzzer to steal the 69-66 decision.

Both games this week will be broadcast on the Pac-12 Networks. Thad Anderson and Kami Carmann Snyder will have the calls. Fans can also tune in across the Colorado Radio Network (CUBuffs.com/Listen) to hear Cory Lopez and Carol Callan.

Wanted to mention in this thread that I posted a new thread (https://www.allbuffs.com/threads/bu...-noon-mt-1-16-womens-11-00-am-mt-1-17.146908/) earlier today that describes a new "virtual pre-game event" series the Buffs have scheduled for "season ticket holders, fans and alumni of CU Boulder " of both the men's and women's basketball teams. The 1st of those events for the women's team is scheduled for 11:00 AM MT Sunday before the Stanford game, and if I read things accurately will include Basketball Alumni Letter winner Special Guests Alexis Felts Snyder and Shelley Sheetz.

See that thread for more info and the link to the (Zoom) registration page.

Better damn well beat Cal.

At this point, it may also take a Furd upset to start making a case for JR's future.

If they don't beat Cal, I may not watch another game.

After watching a few Stanford games, I don't see how this team comes close to beating them.

I am looking forward to the virtual event. The last one was fun (no alumni players) but when hard questions were asked, they were deflected.

OK, I've been out of the loop on everything for a bit, but especially women's hoops. Cal is 0-10?!? How the hell did that happen? Weren't they a consistent tourney team the last few years?

The Buffs were experimenting some in the 2nd half, and lose a little in garbage time, but still get a comfortable 75-59 win. Also nice that, outside of Mya Hollingshed, no other Buff played over 21 minutes, so should be as rested as possible going into their David vs. Goliath challenge against the Cardinal on Sunday.

Way to go Buffs!

They were just showing other highlights, and next opponent Stanford has also won today, 82-54 over the Utes.

They are one of rather worst teams in the country, good time to play them.

Wow, Cal is BAD

Don't know exactly but yes Cal was a tourney team for a few years in a row I believe up til 2018-19. I know that they graduated a couple seniors to the WNBA after that season who had been their mainstays. Also the head coach took a job in the NBA with an assistant promoted to head coach. This season almost their entire roster is freshmen and sophomores so I have to assume they lost players to injury or transfers that would have now been their upperclass players.

That’s right, Gottlieb left. Thanks.
