BOULDER – Colorado's Tayanna Jones hasn't always been the most prolific scorer for head coach JR Payne and the Buffaloes, but now in her third year in Boulder the fifth-year senior has carved out an undeniable role.

Jones, who transferred from Georgetown, joined the Buffs for the COIVD-delayed 2020-21 season. She's scored 228 of her 394 career points as a Buffs and is on pace for career-high numbers this season, averaging 8.3 points per game early on.

Contributing points is a bonus for a player with the 'team first' mentality that Jones brings to the table. She matched her career-high with 15 points in CU's 83-32 win at Chicago State on Sunday. It was her best scoring output as a Buff, but after the game, she wasn't as happy-go-lucky as one would expect.

"I was actually kind of upset I didn't get enough rebounds [on Sunday] to be honest," Jones critiqued. "We always score the ball [as a team] but it's the other things that win ball games. I'm more excited about that and I would have been happier if I had more rebounds."

Jones, who has started five games this season, is second on the Buffs in rebounds with 5.4 per game this season. She's been strong on both ends of the floor, with 12 offensive boards, matching her previous career-high.

"Tay is just so gifted athletically," Payne commented. "She can do a lot of different things. We're continuing to try and get her to stay disciplined and be able to play within our system. I thought she did that really well [on Sunday]. She competed on the glass on both ends of the floor. Everything that she did was within the framework of what we wanted to do. Collectively, that was a goal to play that way and she did that really well."
...

Jones and the Buffs return home on Wednesday, hosting Western Michigan (6 p.m. MT). The Broncos are making just their second trip to Boulder. CU owns a 1-0 series advantage, having won the inaugural meeting, 79-62, back in 1999.

Wednesday's game will be streamed online at CUBuffs.com/WatchWBB. Cory Lopez and Carol Callan will have the call on the Colorado Radio Network with pregame starting at 5:30 p.m.

Dominated the glass and paint. Of the 57 shots we took, only 10 were 3s.

BOULDER – Colorado picked up right where it left off in Chicago on Sunday. The Buffaloes returned home on Wednesday night and ran Western Michigan out of the CU Events Center, 75-37.

Colorado (6-2) used an offensive burst early and a defensive lock-down late to pick up the win. CU scored 47 points in the first half and led by 27 points at the half. The Buffs' defense impressed, limiting the opponent to under 40 points for the second consecutive game.

"I did not expect us to play that well," head coach JR Payne admitted. "To be honest, we didn't have a great practice yesterday. We did have a good shootaround today, but I thought we played really well tonight against a different style of team. Their offensive system is different than we typically see, with all of the switching. They switch everything defensively, which we don't typically see. I thought our defense really dictated our offense. I'm really proud of how everybody played tonight."

Three Buffs finished in double figures, led by Quay Miller's 20 points. Aaronette Vonleh and Jaylyn Sherrod contributed 11 and 10 points, respectively. Junior Tameiya Sadler was all over the floor on Wednesday. She only totaled five points but lassoed a season-high eight rebounds and a career-best seven steals.

"We all know Tam is one of the most talented players on our roster," Payne expressed. 'She can do things that nobody else can. But we have been talking about playing with more urgency – be stout. We use the term stout with her. We need to be tougher. We need to be more urgent. She's capable of doing that. I almost said, 'You messed up, you showed everybody what you're capable of,' so now we expect it. If Tam can play like that, Tam is an X-factor for us. She's a difference-maker. When she can play like that, it opens things up for other people. It creates windows, it seems, you know, for our post players. It can create transition offense. We need Tam to play like that and clearly, she's capable."

The win marked a second consecutive milestone for Payne, who picked up her 200th career victory on Sunday. Wednesday's win was her 100th as the bench boss at CU.

"I just think we've worked really hard to have a great staff and great players," Payne reflected. "I had a lot of old players reach out after 200 and I thought in every one of them, I was like man, a lot of them were with you at the point guard or a lot of them were with you hitting that jumper baseline. It's really fun to be at a place where you can stay long enough to do that because we've been at other places where we've sort of built a program and left. It's been really a blessing to be here this long. I'm excited along with these guys to have many more."

Western Michigan (2-4) was limited to 14 baskets on the night and attempted 33 of its 54 shots from behind the arc. The Broncos turned the ball over 23 times, leading to 33 points off turnovers for the Buffs. Lauren Ross was the lone Bronco to hit double figures, leading WMU with 13 points.

"We paid attention to the personnel so knowing how to guard each player on the court really helped us," Sadler explained. "We were in the gaps on defense and talking to each other. We communicated a lot tonight on defense."
...

Turning Point
Colorado forced eight turnovers in the first quarter, but none were bigger than a pair of back-to-back swipes from Kindyll Wetta in the closing minutes of the period. She converted one steal on her own on the fast break and the second led to a Miller's 3 that put the Buffs up 27-9.

"I think tonight was a big game for us," Wetta noted. "Like coach was saying, I think this is the first time that we've all gelled together as a team defensively. Like Tameiya was saying, in the gaps talking, going for steals and I think that shows what we can do."

Up Next
The Buffs will be back out on the road on Sunday, traveling to Boise State for a 1 p.m. MT tip against the Broncos.

Notes
CU's 29 points in the first quarter marked its best opening quarter of the season…The last time CU held opponents to under 40 points in back-to-back games was Prairie View A&M (38) and Samford (39) in the 2018-19 season…It was the second straight game CU held its opponent to 20 points or less in both halves (Chicago State)…Miller passed 800 career points on Wednesday (813)…She's now scored 452 points at Colorado…CU had a season-high 50 points in the paint…The Buffs' 33 points off turnovers were also a season-high.

I did watch the entire game, but blowouts are hard to stick with until the end.

Western Michigan shot a horrible % both from the field and behind the arc.

Obviously not Pac-12 talent.

I think we are shooting better at free throws than in prior years.

Tam with 7 steals was exciting.

BOISE, Idaho – The Colorado women's basketball team will make the 814-mile trip to Boise State, taking on the Broncos for the first time in program history on Sunday (1 p.m. MT).

The Buffaloes (6-2) have been in a revolving door of late, seemingly interchanging home and away contests. CU took on Western Michigan, also the Broncos, on Wednesday and is right back out the door for the weekend.

"It's a quick turnaround for sure," sophomore Kindyll Wetta said after Wednesday's win. "We all just feel like we got back [from Knoxville and Chicago]. We're ready to go on the road again and challenge ourselves in another arena where we have zero fans. It's going to be good for us in the long run."

CU is 3-0 all-time against DI schools with the Broncos nickname. The Buffs have two wins over Santa Clara to go with this week's win over WMU. Boise State traveled to Boulder last year for the Rocky Mountain Hoops Classic but did not faceoff against the Buffs.

The Buffs do have connections to BSU. Head coach JR Payne and associate head coach Toriano Towns spent three seasons from 2005-2008 as assistant coaches for the Broncos. Assistant coach Tim Hays started his collegiate playing career at Boise State

"We're close with their coaching staff," Payne added postgame on Wednesday. "We kind of follow them. We'll dig into the scout in the next day or so and we're excited to go back to Boise and be able to play against Boise."

Both teams have been able to put up points so far this season. Colorado has averaged 75.0 ppg, while BSU (3-5) has scored 70.6 on average. The difference is in the points allowed. Boise State has given up 66.0 points per game with the Buffs keeping opponents to 54.8.

Sunday's game will be streamed on the Mountain West Network. Cory Lopez will have the call on the Colorado Radio Network, CUBuffs.com/Listen and the Varsity app with pregame starting at 12:30 p.m

BOULDER – The 7-2 Colorado Buffaloes return home to the CU Events Center for its only game of the week on Wednesday. CU will host Southern Utah (6 p.m. MT) before jumping momentarily into Pac-12 play next week.

Three of Colorado's last four games have been on the road, with only a brief layover coming last week when Western Michigan came to town. CU is 2-2 on the road this season but remains perfect (4-0) in front of the home crowd.

"This preseason has been really challenging, but I love that our team is rising to the challenge of having to go on the road so much," head coach JR Payne explained. "We're excited to be here for more than a week. I think we're here for nine days and excited to play at home, although we only have one [game] and then we're back on the road again. It's great to be here going into finals in the next few weeks. Everyone's just happy to be able to get settled and do what we need to do here."

Colorado's defense has been nearly impenetrable over the last three games. Opposing offenses are averaging just 39.0 points per game in CU's last three wins. Chicago State, Western Michigan and Boise State have combined for 65 turnovers in the last three games.

Offensively, the Buffs are averaging 76.3 points per game in the last three games and 74.6 points on the season.

"We just want to have balance," Payne added. "No matter whom we are playing, no matter what their size looks like or athleticism. We want to try to have balance in what we're doing offensively."

Southern Utah (3-5) enters Wednesday's game ranked 4th in the NCAA with 47.8 rebounds per game. SUU's Lizzy Williams is 9th in the nation in blocks per game (2.8) and double-doubles (5). She also leads the Western Athletic Conference and is 11thin in the NCAA in rebounding (11.5 rpg).

"We just want to play fearlessly," Payne noted. "We assume she [Williams] is going to block some shots. She blocks a lot of shots. It doesn't really matter to us. We just want to be aggressive going to the basket, whether that's guards attacking or post players finishing inside. Having great balance and being able to share the ball is really important."
...

Coverage of Wednesday's game will start with pregame on the Colorado Radio Network, the Varsity app and CUBuffs.com/listen at 5:30. The game will be streamed online at CUBuffs.com/WatchWBB.

The first 100 fans in attendance will receive a Colorado basketball mug.
