After a great come from behind conference opening win at home over then #14 (now @18) West Virginia this past Saturday, women's basketball (10-2 overall; 1-0 in Big 12 play) gets a pretty long break from games before officially re-starting the season early in 2025 with a challenging 2 game road trip to Texas. It starts with a New Year's Day evening matchup with the highest ranked Big 12 squad, the #11 TCU Horned Frogs (12-1, 1-0 ). Then, it's off to Waco to face the RV (receiving 1 vote in the latest AP poll) Baylor Bears (11-2, 1-0). (Note - TCU will have a game before facing the Buffs, a 12/29 home non-conference matchup with Brown. Baylor will be facing off with OSU on New Year's Day before hosting CU.)

In the latest NET rankings (as of games played 12/22 ; available at https://www.ncaa.com/rankings/basketball-women/d1/ncaa-womens-basketball-net-rankings), CU is at #77, TCU #8 and Baylor #18.

As I assume will be the case for most if not all games hosted by a Big 12 school, both games are scheduled to be streamed on ESPN+ for those with a subscription to that paid subscription service. (Further info and links for media options available near the bottom of this post.)

Go Buffs!!!

Buffs Continue at No. 11 TCU: Five Things to Know

Colorado opens the Big 12 road season in Fort Worth

By: Seth Pringle, Athletic Communications

FORT WORTH –
Colorado opens 2025 with a New Year's Day showdown on Wednesday against No. 11 TCU at Schollmaier Arena (5:30 p.m. MT/ESPN+).

Wednesday will mark the first meeting between CU and TCU since the first round of the 2014 WNIT. The Buffaloes are 4-0 all-time against the Horned Frogs, including a 101-56 win in CU's only stop in Forth Worth in December 1993.

Colorado (10-2, 1-0) closed 2024 with a 65-60 come-from-behind win over then No. 14 West Virginia. The Buffs trailed by 16 points with 3:05 to play in the third quarter. Frida Formann scored a game-high 22 points in the win, helping her to be named one of the U.S. Basketball Writer's Association's National Player of the Week.

TCU (13-1, 1-0) enters jumped back into non-conference play on Sunday, beating Brown 79-47. TCU has won 13 straight home games, entering Wednesday. Newcomer Hailey Van Lith leads TCU with 18.9 points per game this season.

Five Things to Know

  1. National Honor – Frida Formannn was one of five USWBA National Players of the Week for Dec. 24. She accounted for 15 of CU's 25 first-half points. Formann has hit 22 3-pointers since returning to the lineup and has had four games with at least three makes from beyond the arc.
  2. Vs Ranked – CU's win over WVU was its 71st ranked win in program history. The Buffs are 1-1 this season. CU went 5-9 last season vs ranked opponents, marking the most ranked wins since its six in 2001-02. Colorado has 17 ranked wins under head coach JR Payne (AP & WBCA).
  3. Net Gains – CU's game at TCU is the second of three consecutive games against teams in the top 20 of the NET rankings. The Buffs beat WVU (9 NET). TCU is 8, and Baylor is currently 18.
  4. On Fire % - The Buffs have hit .500 from the floor in its last five games. It's the first time CU has shot .500 or higher in five consecutive games since doing so in six straight games from Dec. 6-22, 1985. CU shot a season-high .571 (36-63) against Tennessee Tech. CU is 39-3 all-time under JR Payne when shooting .500 or better.
  5. Finish! – The Buffs shot 81.8% from the floor (9-11) in the fourth quarter against West Virginia. It was CU's best quarter-field goal percentage since shooting 84.6% (11-13) at SMU last season.
Quotable
"I felt it a lot from lots of different people. With a young team, you might get into a timeout when you're down 16, and their eyes are really big, there was none of that. It was just strategy. What do we need to do? What's working, what's not working, and over-communicating. Every time we left a huddle, Frida was communicating with the group as we were leaving, everybody was just really locked in." – Coach Payne on having a new team ready for the moment against West Virginia.

Cory Lopez and Carol Callan will have pregame coverage starting 30 minutes before tip-off on the Colorado Radio Network.

Up Next: Jan. 4, at Baylor (ESPN+/1 p.m. MT).

It's a 21-27:TCU lead at the half.
(I'm not able to watch tonight, but per the live stats looks like almost everything is VERY close except for fouls, with the Buffs having ZERO free throw attempts so far vs. TCU being 5-7.)

TCU gets the W 50-63. (Per the below Brian Howell tweet, looks like the late ~1/2 of the 2nd quarter into the first few minutes of the 3rd ended up putting the Buffs in a hole they weren't able to climb out of (although they did get the deficit down to 5 with around 6-1/2 minutes left). Also, per the live stats, CU didn't hit a field goal in the last 2:51 of the game, at which time they were down 8.)

CU shot no free throws in the first half.

CU can't win with Frida not making a field goal in an entire game. I hope that never happens again.

Arielle Roberson's sister plays for CU. The youngest sister plays for Duke.

I think I remember a younger brother who used to come to the games.

All of the Roberson siblings have gone to college on athletic scholarships if the younger brother is doing so. If not, he is the exception in a very talented and athletic family.

Game day!

WBB 50th Season Highlights: Baylor

Colorado secured its second win in Waco over the Bears in 2004

By: Seth Pringle, Athletic Communications

WACO, Texas –
The 2024-25 season marks Colorado's return to the Big 12 Conference and a renewal of traditional and historic rivalries.

As a part of the celebration of the 50th anniversary season of Colorado women's basketball, CUBuffs.com will take a look back at historic matchups.

The Game: Colorado at Baylor, Jan. 7, 2004

The Buffs headed to Waco to open the Big 12 season, having gone 11-1 in the non-conference season. CU entered Big 12 play ranked No. 14 in the country, but had only gone 1-3 in previous meetings in Waco. Baylor (12-1) was fresh to the Top 25, tied at No. 24 in the nation with Miami.

Fagan, BJORKLUND PACE BUFFS PAST NO. 24 BAYLOR

WACO, Texas (AP) --
Kate Fagan scored 17 points and Tera Bjorklund added 16 to lead 14th-ranked Colorado to a 69-59 win over No. 24 Baylor in the Big 12 opener for both Wednesday night.
...

Colorado (10-3, 1-1 Big 12) will look to get back on track following its first Big 12 loss of the season at No. 11 TCU on Wednesday. Baylor (11-3, 1-1 Big 12) opened the New Year with a 84-61 loss to Oklahoma State. It was their first home loss of the season.

Tipoff on Saturday (Jan. 4) is set for 1 p.m. MT on ESPN+.

Cory Lopez and Carol Callan will have pregame coverage starting 30 minutes before tip-off on the Colorado Radio Network.

Vonleh looks much heavier. Any idea why she left, other than transfer mania?

After I posted the 3rd quarter score a couple posts ago, the game went away from the Buffs and the Bears get the win by a 62-76 score.

A couple of ranked road games that were essentially a toss up until late. No moral victories, but it does gives me hope that this team will be able to pull out a couple of these

got to be more consistent on the offensive end and find ways to score when they can't shoot the 3 well. Not horrid but a definite lost opportunity to get a quad 1 win on the road

When a team doesn't have big scorers, they rely on defense. JR's teams have always prided themselves on defense. Defense is not that good, especially in the middle, around the basket. Nettie did whatever she wanted and we had no answer.

We need Frida to get out of her shooting slump.

If they pull of an upset, it will be at home. This team has not shown itself to be good on the road.
