TEMPE, Ariz. – As the clock hit 0.00 in Colorado's 81-76 win over Southern California last Sunday there was a sense of relief that spread across the Buffaloes women's basketball program.

Colorado's first Pac-12 win of the season snapped an 11-game slide for the Buffs, but it also marked a turning point for head coach JR Payne's young club. CU, coming off a tough loss to one of the top teams in the nation at Oregon, was just a few possessions away from a 2-0 weekend.

"I thought we had a great weekend of basketball," Payne explained. "I thought we had a great week of practice. I told the team that a lot of teams that have been through the adversity that we have in the past couple months would have splintered and gone their own way—or turned on each other. This group remains really close and hard working. I think it speaks to their character and I think it speaks to where we're going as a team."

The Buffs had gotten close to picking up wins earlier in the conference season. CU's most notable near misses came at home against Arizona and Arizona State to open the New Year. Colorado dropped the first weekend of 2019 by a combined eight points. Other conference games haven't been so kind.

This week Colorado gets a shot a redemption, traveling to Arizona for rematches with the Sun Devils and Wildcats.

"They are both teams that we have seen before," Hollingshed explained. "We are familiar with them already, so we are just working on the things that we didn't do as well in the last games. We are getting better at those in practice. We will just continue to work hard and play hard."

Friday's game is available through Arizona State's live stream. Tip is set for 6 p.m. MT. Sunday's game at Arizona is a noon MT start and will be broadcast across the Pac-12 Networks. Fans can continue to find the Buffs all season long on the Buffalo Radio Network.

The Game: Colorado heads to Tempe on Friday for a rematch with the Sun Devils. Arizona State escaped Boulder with a six-point win, 76-70, in the early days of the Pac-12 season. Kennedy Leonard led CU with 20 points. The Buffs got within two points inside the final minute, but could not complete the comeback.

About the Buffaloes: Colorado's broke an 11-game losing streak with its 81-76 win over Southern California. The win moved the Buffs to one game back of .500 (11-12). CU has four players averaging double-figure scoring this season. Senior Kennedy Leonard (14.1 ppg) leads the group. Senior Alexis Robinson (12.8), junior Quinessa Caylao-Do (10.9) and sophomore Mya Hollingshed (11.7 ppg) round out the top-scorers.

About ASU: The Sun Devils had an unexpected bye due to the cancelation of their game at Washington on Sunday. Arizona State opened last week with a 61-46 win at Washington State. The Sun Devils jumped up one spot to No. 19 in the AP rankings this week. Kianna Ibis leads ASU with her 14.9 ppg.

Last Time Out: Colorado avoided it's first ever 12-game losing streak with its win over USC on Sunday. CU built up a 14-point fourth-quarter lead and was able to hold off the Trojans' comeback attempt. Alexis Robinson hit a key 3-pointer with 32.7 seconds to go play and Mya Hollingshed converted a pair of free throws to secure the win. Hollingshed led the Buffs with 21 points. Robinson added 16.

Wanted to mention there's an update on Kennedy Leonard in the Buffzone (Brian Howell) ASU game preview article linked to in the below tweet-

"
The Buffs are hoping to get a boost from Leonard soon, however. The senior won't play against Arizona State, but could return to the court for a few minutes Sunday at Arizona.

"She's still pretty limited," Payne said. "She's progressing exactly the way the doctor wants her to. She's definitely on her way to being back on the court."
"

Buffs had a tough start to the 2nd (went scoreless until the 5:00 mark), then got it down to 6 with some good play, esp. by Caylao-Do who I believe scored 7 straight before the Buffs suffer 3 straight possessions with turnovers ((1) unforced throwaway and then 2 straight offensive fouls (charges)) that leads to the sun devil 10 point lead. Defensively, the Buffs have looked a lot better recently after switching to a zone.

Alexis Robinson hurt her knee at practice yesterday, so she didn't play. Kennedy Leonard did play some., 12 minutes. It wasn't pretty.

Without Robinson and Leonard only playing 5 minutes, tough go on the road.

Leonard played 12 minutes according to the box score.

The poor shooting from both the field and the free throw line did them in, as well as too many turnovers. Buffs did stick with Zona on the boards.
