Women's basketball (10-3 overall, 0-1 in conference play) heads to the PNW to restart Pac 12 play after regaining mojo with a 2 game winning streak at the end of non-conference play (including a convincing win at Marquette) after starting conference play with a loss a couple weeks ago to a VERY tough Utah Ute squad (now ranked #11 in the country). This week's action begins tomorrow afternoon with a game in Seattle against the Washington Huskies (9-2, 1-0), followed up with an early Sunday evening game in Pullman against the WSU Cougars (10-2, 0-1).

In the latest NET rankings available for the season (dated 12/28), the Buffs are at #33, while the Huskies are #112 and Cougars #49.

Both games are slotted for the Pac 12 Networks. (Further info and links for media options available near the bottom of this thread.)

Go Buffs!!!

Preview in front of this weekend's games - https://cubuffs.com/news/2022/12/29/womens-basketball-buffs-back-on-the-road.aspx

SEATTLE – Colorado's road excursions continue this week with visits to Washington and Washington State as the Buffaloes dive fully into Pac-12 Conference play.

Being on the road is nothing new for Colorado this season. CU has played seven of its 13 games away from Boulder. The Buffs are an even .500 on the road this season and have a neutral site win over Louisiana.

Friday's game against the Huskies will be the team's first since splitting from Milwaukee for the holiday break after last Wednesday's win at Marquette.

"I was a bit worried because of all the canceled flights, people getting stuck and things like that," head coach JR Payne explained about everyone coming back from the break. "I was worried about how we would respond, but our last couple days of practice have been really good."

Colorado (10-3, 0-1 Pac-12) has held opponents to under 50 points in six of its last seven games. The Buffs have led from start to finish in each of its previous two games and are ready to hop back into conference play after opening the Pac-12 slate with a disappointing loss at Utah.

"I think we're really comfortable with starting Pac-12 play," Payne stated. "It's been a really challenging few days with travel, cancelation and the snowstorm. It's just been a pretty chaotic week. But overall, we're comfortable in who we are and what we're doing. We feel great entering Pac-12 play."

Even with CU starting the week winners of six of its last seven games, the team is still striving for more consistent play.

"I think the biggest thing we need is consistency," Payne explained. "We played really well the last time out [at Marquette] and that was our most consistent game. We're striving for more of a consistent effort on both sides of the ball every single day. We can't have not great practices and then average practices or great halves and then average halves. We need to be playing great all the time."

Washington (9-2, 1-0 Pac-12) leads the all-time series by two games, 16-14, but the Buffs have won the last two meetings. Colorado bounced the Huskies from the Pac-12 Tournament last season. UW was picked to finish 10th in both Pac-12 preseason polls and return eight players from last season. Haley Van **** was the Huskies' lone Pac-12 Preseason All-Conference selection, earning an honorable mention. Washington has four of its last five, including the opening leg of the Apple Cup series against Washington State.

Washington State (10-2, 0-1 Pac-12) has won seven of its last eight heading into the weekend. The Cougars will open the week at home against Utah on Friday. WSU was picked one spot ahead of CU, seventh, in the preseason polls and holds a 13-8 series advantage over Colorado. The Cougars won last year's lone meeting in Boulder, 63-56.

Both games this weekend will be televised across the Pac-12 Networks. Friday's tip is set for 3 p.m. MT, while Sunday is a 5 p.m. MT scheduled start.

Cory Lopez will have the call on the Colorado Radio Network, the Varsity App and CUBuffs.com/Listen. Pregame coverage will start a half-hour before tip.

This is a 2 PM tip in Seattle. My guess is the place will be swarming with little kids.

Media after the team gets the WIN in Seattle!

SEATTLE – Colorado picked up its first Pac-12 win of the season but it was not without drama. Colorado led by as many as 19 in the 64-56 win over Washington at the Alaska Airlines Arena.

Colorado (11-3, 1-1 Pac-12) had four players hit double figures on the day. Senior Quay Miller made her return to Seattle with a 14-point-eight-rebound performance. Sophomore Kindyll Wetta converted three 3's and contributed 12 points off the bench. Aaronette Vonleh and Jaylyn Sherrod each finished with 10 points.

"Today felt really good," Wetta commented. "I've been working a lot on my shot and it just hasn't been falling. To be able to hit three 3's today really gave me a boost of confidence. Hopefully, I can carry that into other games."

Friday was a story of two halves for the Buffs. CU shot 53.6% in the first half but saw its production drop to 37.5% in the second. The Buffs led by 15 at the half, before Washington battled back to within six points in the fourth quarter.

"I wished the full 40 minutes had looked like the first 20," head coach JR Payne expressed. "That doesn't always happen. When it's ugly and it's not going your way – to find a way to get it done sometimes is enough. It was enough today. It may not be another day but I thought we sort of dug in and did what we needed to do."

Washington (9-3, 1-1 Pac-12) was led by Jayda Noble and her 14 points.
...

"To not really play your best and still win on the road is tough to do in this league," Payne continued. "We just have to make sure we don't have those lapses because it's hard to do that against teams in this conference."

Up Next
Colorado will ring in the New Year from the Palouse on Sunday. The Buffs will take on the Cougars at 5 p.m. MT in Pullman.

Notes
The Buffs improved to 4-3 on the road this season…CU is now 15-16 all-time against UW and 5-8 in Seattle…UW shot 42.0% from the field, the third highest by an opponent this season…CU lost the rebounding battle, 32-26…Sherrod had six more assists to give her 376 in her career.

Buffs lost focus in the 2nd half. There was a long delay while a person in the stands who got sick was attended to. Sounded like it was someone in the CU section.

Looked after that the Buffs were playing not to lose and they let UDub back in the game.

Good job getting the W and for Wetta to find her scoring touch.

It's been a while since the Buffs could get 4 players in double figures.

PULLMAN-The Colorado women's basketball team started 2023 off right with a gutsy 65-54 win over Washington State Sunday here at Beasley Coliseum.

Colorado (12-3, 2-1 Pac-12) had 25 points off Washington State (10-4, 0-3 Pac-12) turnovers compared to just seven by the Cougars. The Buffs were also dominant on the offensive glass, out-rebounding the Cougars 19-5 in that category.

"We're not as great on the glass as we've maybe been in past years," Payne explained. "But when we do rebound like that, we're a different ball club. We can really limit opponent's opportunities on one end and secure those extra opportunities that we need on the offensive end. That was huge for us."

The Buffs were led by sophomore center Aaronette Vonleh who scored a career-high 20 points and brought down six rebounds. Quay Miller followed with 14 points and led the team with eight boards. Kindyll Wetta tacked on 10 points of her own while Jaylyn Sherrod served seven assists to lead the Buffs.

"Scoring a career-high was definitely a confidence booster." said Vonleh. "It's also nice because when the ball goes inside, it opens up stuff for the guards outside, so me contributing like that helps the team and I just want to continue to do that."

Colorado took WSU's best punch and held off several runs. Leading by just three at the end of the third, Colorado put together a dominant fourth quarter to help secure the win, outscoring the Cougars 20-12 in the period.
...

"We're so excited to go home," Payne said. "It feels like we haven't been home in forever so to come out with two wins then come home for three games is really great."

Up Next: The Buffs will return home on Friday, January 6 for a rematch with undefeated and 11th-ranked Utah at the CU Events Center at 7 p.m.

This team and program deserve more support. Quietly having a damn good season.
RG doesn't care about women's sports. The Athletic Department is not out promoting the team or the players.

Nettie played very well last night. I don't know if you have seen any video, but she has dunked in practice. Now to get her to do it in a game.

Utah is going to be an extremely tough W, but that's why you play the games.
