Women's bball (16-7, 5-7 in Pac 12 play) is scheduled to have their last regular season road trip of the season this weekend, as they head off to L.A. to visit UCLA (11-10, 6-6) this Friday night, followed up with a Sunday noon matinee vs. USC (10-13, 3-10).

Both games are slotted to be on one or the other Pac 12 channel. (See near the bottom of this post for links and more info.)

(Note - As I type this, the Buffs are #34 in the NET rankings, so I believe still have control over their own destiny as far as making the NCAA tournament, with 4 scheduled regular season games remaining along with the Pac 12 tourney, along with 2 possible makeup games (although assume those are looking less and less likely to happen?). UCLA is #55 in NET, while USC is #82.)

Go Buffs!

LOS ANGELES – JR Payne and the Colorado Buffaloes jet back to California for the final two road contests of the season. CU closes out its current four-game road trip with stops at UCLA (Friday) and Southern California (Sunday).

Colorado (16-7, 5-7 Pac-12) picked up a road split in the first leg of the California trip. The Buffs opened with a wire-to-wire 73-56 win over Cal and then fell to No. 2 Stanford. CU was clicking on all cylinders in Berkeley and had the lead at halftime against the Cardinal, but just couldn't get to the finish line ahead of Stanford.

The Buffs left the court disappointed at Maples Pavilion, but by the team got back to Colorado Sunday night the focus had already shifted towards this coming weekend and the new task at hand.

"We have prioritized being in the moment and taking it one day at a time," Payne explained. "We are excited to play against a very good UCLA team and have poured all of our effort into that."
...

"We understand the importance of having a heightened sense of focus in this final stretch of the season," Payne added. "Focus on the scout, on doing our job and on bringing great energy."

The Buffs have already found success against the Bruins this season. CU snapped a 10-game losing streak to UCLA with its 71-63 win earlier this season in Boulder. Colorado had season-highs in free-throws made (25) and attempted (33) in the win. The Buffs trailed after the first quarter for the first time this season and got down by as many as seven early on against the Bruins.

A win on Friday would give Colorado its first season-sweep of the Bruins since the 2013-14 season. It would also go a long way as far as seeding for the Pac-12 Tournament.

UCLA (11-9, 6-6 Pac-12) currently occupies the sixth spot in the conference standings, with the Buffs sitting in ninth but just one game back of the Bruins. The Bruins have lost six of its last eight, including the team's forfeit to Oregon. The Bruins had a mid-week non-conference game against the Ducks on Wednesday, resulting in a 67-53 loss.

The Buffs will remain in LA to close the trip on Sunday, driving down the road to USC. The Trojans are behind CU in the standings with a 3-10 Pac-12 record. CU defeated USC, 71-58, in Boulder. Mya Hollingshed head 18 points and eight rebounds in the win.

Both games will be on the Pac-12 Network this weekend.

I either read or heard announcers say that the Pac-12 wants each to team to play the other teams once during the regular season and because of that the make up games for Colorado are unlikely to be made up.

Nice convincing win to start the road trip!
(The Buffs had a great start to the 3rd quarter that saw their lead quickly go up to 16 points, and although the game pretty much stabilized after that the Bruins never got closer than 8 points the rest of the way.)

Go Buffs!

LOS ANGELES – Head coach JR Payne picked up her first win in Westwood with her Colorado Buffaloes securing a 67-54 decision inside the historic Pauley Pavilion on Friday. The win for the Buffs gives Colorado its first regular-season sweep of the Bruins since the 2013-14 season.

The win moves CU to 17-7 on the season and 6-7 in the Pac-12 Conference. The 17 wins match the most for the Buffs since Payne's first season in Boulder. CU jumps into the sixth seed in the Pac-12 standings and now holds the tie-breaker over UCLA (11-9, 6-7 Pac-12) with three games to play.

"It's fantastic to see the team respond and play that way," Payne stated after the win. "Our seniors, our leaders, our veterans are all pushing the envelope as far as focus and attention to detail. Our team is really taking the lead on what we need to be doing and what that should look like. I give them the credit for holding themselves to a very high standard right now."

Fifth-year senior Mya Hollingshed led the way for Colorado with her game-high 19 points. She also led the Buffs with seven rebounds and added three, two steals and a block to her night. Friday was game 134 for Hollingshed, tying former Buff Rachel Hargis (2010-14) for most games played at CU.

"I honestly don't know [about the record]," Hollingshed said. "I just think about all the players that were ahead of me like Brittany Spears and Lisa VanGoor. I really don't know how it feels. I think it will hit me when they list all the accolades on Senior Day. I'm just so appreciative that they [Colorado] gave me an opportunity to grow and a chance to blossom."
...

Turning Point: UCLA took a 20-17 lead to start the second quarter before Frida Fromann tied the game back up at 20 with her only three points of the night. From that point on CU outscored the Bruins 50-34 and never relinquished the lead.

Up Next: The Buffs move on in the Los Angeles tour, heading to USC for the final road game of the season. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m. MT (Pac-12 Networks).

Notes: Friday as CU's first win at UCLA since Jan. 5, 2014…CU has its first two-game win streak over UCLA since the 2013-14 season (3)…The Buffs attempted the fewest 3-pointers (10) since last season's meeting with Air Force (6)…CU's two 3FGM was the fewest this season…All nine players who played scored for the Buffs…CU's bench outscored UCLA's 22-13…Hollingshed passed Tracy Tripp for 11th on CU's all-time scoring list (1,588)…Tuitele recorded two offensive rebounds, giving her 201 for her career.

(One of those rare games where one team (the Buffs in this case) seemed to have an advantage, or at worst a tie, in pretty much every positive statistical category.)

Was on a Zoom call with WBB before the game. It sounds like Tay Jones will be back for a Covid year next season.

Buffs played team basketball today.
The defense is salty. With that as a foundation, if they make sure to get good shots without so many empty offensive possessions then this team gets very dangerous.

LOS ANGELES – Head coach JR Payne's Colorado women's basketball team completed its first-ever road-sweep of UCLA and USC after a 67-54 victory over USC Sunday afternoon at the Galen Center.

Colorado has now won four of their last five, including three on the road, and has now beaten USC for the second time this season. The Buffs record improves to 18-7 with a 7-7 mark in Pac-12 play while the Trojans fall to 11-14 and 4-11 in Pac-12 competition.

The Buffs led for all but four minutes in this one and an 8-0 run at the end of the first quarter set the foundation. Colorado continued to add to its lead and defend USC well, forcing them to shoot just 30% from the field and go just 1-for-12 from behind the arc. In the fourth, the Buffs led by as many as 20 and held off the Trojans the rest of the way.

"Our team was really focused for this game," Payne enthused. "Even though it was a short turnaround, we were ready and I think that's a testament to our team knowing how important it is to be prepared."

In an overall balanced effort from the women in black and gold, Colorado shot an impressive 47% from the field and their bench outscored USC's 27-11. Colorado also had every player that stepped on the floor score for the second straight game.

"Everybody scored. That's huge," said Payne. "The teams in this conference are too good to beat with just one or two players playing well. We need everyone to be confident and ready to contribute, and we had that today."

Fifth-year senior Mya Hollingshed led the Buffs in scoring and rebounds with 16 points and six boards as junior Quay Miller followed with 13 points.

Rayah Marshall led the Trojans with 13 points followed by Jordyn Jenkins with 12.
...

"We're really excited to come home," explained Payne. "When you're on the road for two weeks, it's a long time. We're excited to have our fans back. I really hope Buff nation will come out and support us because we are playing great basketball and these are the last games for our seniors at home. I think we should do everything we can to get a huge crowd at both games next week and send them out of the [CU] Events Center in style."

Up Next: The Buffs will get set for a midweek matchup when they welcome the Oregon Ducks to Boulder Wednesday night at 7 p.m. at the CU Events Center (Pac-12 Networks).

Notes: Buffs have now won their last three against USC, the team's longest streak in the series…First regular-season sweep over USC…CU's 18 wins is the most since the team's 19 in the 2013-14 season…CU now has four Pac-12 wins on the road, the most since its six in 2012-13…Second consecutive games with a 67-54 outcome…USC's 11 turnovers match the fewest the Buffs have forced this season (at Arizona)...Hollingshed moved into 9th on CU's scoring list passing Jamillah Lang and Bridget Turner…Hollingshed was +23 on the afternoon, her highest rating in Pac-12 play this season….Held USC to under 30% shooting in the first three quarters.

Head Coach
JR Payne
On battling through the ups and down in a season
"Every team goes through ups and downs. Sometimes it translates to more wins or losses, but every team goes through that a little bit. It's all about how your veterans handle those ups and downs and I think our team was very self reflective about, 'What can 'I' do better?' In this day and age, sometimes that's hard for people to do. A lot of people point fingers and our team chose not to do that. I think that's a huge part of our ability to turn it around. "Everybody said, "Okay, I can do better here, and I can do better there.' I think when we bought into that is when we really started playing well again, and I do think we're playing good basketball right now."

Watching the game live, the biggest difference was shooting. Thee Buffs were making a much higher percentage of their open looks than USC. The Buffs struggled to rebound at time, but they more than made up for it with their shooting, relative to USC.

It also helped that USC's Jordyn Jenkins didn't play in the second half due to injury.

Sadly the injury to Jenkins did help the Buffs. I do hope she will be okay. Never like to see players get hurt.
