After having its scheduled Pac 12 start last weekend postponed due to Covid-19 issues within its program, the women's bball team (11-0, 0-0 in Pac 12 play) is scheduled to try again this weekend. 1st off is a scheduled game tomorrow evening against the USC Trojans (7-5, 0-0), while Sunday has a scheduled late morning game against the UCLA Bruins (5-3, 0-0).
(With cancellations common, hard to know when to start these threads, but figured I'd do this now since I saw the team recently release its preview article (see below) for the 2 games scheduled over the next few days, and also see a tweet from USC showing their team getting on a bus to the airport.)

A couple notes:
  • Just to highlight what's stated in the below article, the women will evidently need to where masks during, at minimum(???), tomorrow's game.
  • Both games are scheduled to be on the Pac 12 Networks, L.A. channel only.
  • If the games happen, the Buffs should NOT be at a rust disadvantage, as both the L.A. schools have also had cancellation issues. The Trojans last played December 18th, and the Bruins December 15th. (Both had their conference opening games cancelled vs. the Arizona schools, and both have already announced that their games scheduled this weekend against Utah have been postponed (vs. Dec. 20th for the Buffs). (USC has already announced it was able to schedule a "last minute" home game against Arizona this Sunday to replace the postponed Utah game.)
Go Buffs!

BOULDER – The Colorado women's basketball team will be back on the court for the first time in 18 days, taking on Southern California (7 p.m. MT, Pac-12 Networks) on Friday.

The 11-0 Buffs were scheduled to travel to Oregon State and Oregon for the opening week of Pac-12 play last weekend. Instead, the team got hit with the COVID bug and had to postpone the trip. CU wasn't the only team that had health and safety issues last weekend, only Washington State, California and Stanford were in action out of the 12 teams in the league.

The Buffs remain one of three undefeated Division I teams left standing along with No. 4 Arizona and No. 19 North Carolina.

"We don't talk about it," head coach JR Payne explained. "I'm sure our team knows. I'm sure our staff knows. We just always want to go 1-0 on game day. If we can continue to do that, then we'll be happy."

The 18-day in-season break is CU's longest break in between games since a 21-day layoff from Dec. 8 – Dec. 29, 1979. The Buffs had six canceled games last season, but never an entire weekend of play.

"The biggest thing [for us] is just flow [of the season]," Payne added. "You get into such a rhythm during the season. It's practice, practice, practice, play, rest, practice, practice. Right now, we have no flow. There's no rhythm. We haven't gotten up and down in I don't know how many days. That is the biggest thing. We have talent. We have great players. We have toughness. We have everything we need to be successful it's just really trying to get back in some sense of a rhythm."

Colorado has been limited in personnel numbers since having to postpone. The Buffs have yet to have a full squad back at practice and will have to wear masks during the game, something the team is adjusting to.

"Every team is going to go through adversity," Payne continued. "The teams that are going to be successful are the teams that can say – I read (former CU men's assistant/current men's head coach at George Mason) Kim English's quote on Twitter 'So what. Now what?' I think that's our mindset. If we have seven healthy [players], then we're playing and we have high expectations for those seven or however many there are. We pride ourselves on playing in a certain way and to a certain standard, and we will continue to do that."

On the other side of the court, Southern California (7-3) has had to battle a long break as well. The Trojans last played on Dec. 18 against Texas Southern and have since had their game against Long Beach State canceled and their first conference weekend against Arizona and Arizona State postponed. The Pac-12 announced the USC and Arizona game will be made up on Sunday, due to Utah's continued shutdown.

Cory Lopez will be on the Colorado Radio Network, starting with pregame coverage at 6:30. Jenny Cavnar and former Buff Kami Carmann-Snyder will be on the Pac-12 Network broadcast.

Friday's game will be the second in CU's Gift Card Drive to help assist victims of the Marshall Fire. Gift cards will be accepted at all entrances at the games, and fans are asked to bring cards with the denomination visible on the card. Fowler Automotive has also committed to matching every gift card donation made this weekend up to $10,000.

The drive starts with the men's game against Washington State on Thursday night and will go through the weekend with a double-header set for Sunday with the Buffs hosting UCLA at 11 a.m. MT and the men's game against Washington at 3 p.m.

Surprisingly this game is being shown on one of the Pac-12 alternative channels on Dish so I can watch on television and not on a computer screen.

I also sync the call to the Corey Lopes radio broadcast as I don't care for the Pac-12 announcers.

If anyone wants 2 GA tickets for tonight's game send me a message and I will text them to you. I have enjoyed the games so far this year.

Buffs are a bit short handed tonight with only 9 players in uniform. All the starters + Miller, Wetta, Blacksten and Taylor.
In the first half CU has probably had 10 shots blocked in down low. Hollingshed is struggling to score. Still, CU leads 34-29.

Buffs got the lead up to 17 in the 3rd, but USC whittles it down to 56-48 at the end of the quarter. Sherrod makes a 3 early in the 4th; it's 59-48.

8 players had to play the entire game. Some players still not 100% from Covid. I'd say it was a good start to Pac-12 play. And Sherrod made her free throws! Frida made her 3 point shots.

During the game I saw on the scroll that Utah, Arizona State and Oregon State are not playing this weekend due to Covid. So of the 4 teams playing this weekend (CU, Utah, USC and UCLA), only CU will hopefully get in 2 games.

To take nothing away from Mya, do the records she is setting this season get asterisks because no other player has played for 5 seasons?

BOULDER – The Colorado women's basketball team took care of business after an 18-day break, opening Pac-12 Conference play with a 71-58 win over Southern California. The Buffaloes shook off the rust and improved to 12-0 on the season with only nine available players.

The Buffs used an eight-player rotation in their first game since Dec. 20, getting double-digit contributions from four different scorers. Fifth-year senior Mya Hollingshed led all scorers with 18 points and eight rebounds. Junior Quay Miller recorded her first double-double as a Buffs, totaling 13 points and tying her career-high with 10 rebounds. Junior Jaylyn Sherrod had eight assists to go with her 15 points. Sophomore Frida Formann finished with 15 points, going 3-for-8 from 3-point distance.

"I wasn't sure what tonight's game was going to look like because both teams have not played in a while," head coach JR Payne commented after the win. "This is the longest break we've had in between games since 1979, which is a very long time. I am unbelievably proud of my ballclub. We were tough. We were resilient. We pushed through. I think every team in the country is facing some level of adversity at this point of the year. I knew that our response would be tough and gritty. I'm very excited to start Pac-12 (play) with a win against a good USC team. I'm proud of who we are, not even necessarily what we did. I'm proud of who we are as a ballclub and excited to go 1-0 today."

The Buffs' 12-0 start matches its best since the 2019-20 season. CU improved to 3-8 all-time in Pac-12 openers, with two of the three wins coming in the last three seasons. CU also keeps pace with Pac-12 rival Arizona, as the two teams remain the only undefeated squads in the nation.

"It feels awesome [to be 12-0]," Payne added. "We talk a lot about going 1-0 on game day. We just want to continue to do that and play great basketball with great effort. We're excited to be where we are. It's just been a long time since we've played. As a team, we get into such a rhythm of playing every couple of days. There's a rhythm to our lives that revolves around basketball. To have that jilted with Christmas break and then some canceled games -- it has kind of thrown us all a little. I think we feel pretty good now."

Upcoming
The Buffs will look forward to UCLA on Sunday (11 a.m. MT). It will be the first meeting between the two schools since Feb. 28, 2020. Both of the scheduled games between the Buffs and Bruins got canceled in the 2020-21 season.

Notes
CU improved to 23-10 in December in the Payne era…The team is 9-0 at home this season… The win continues CU's Pac-12 win streak, moving to five (four to end last season), marking the first five-game conference winning streak since the 2012-13 season…CU had 14 steals, its eighth game of the season with 10+…USC's bench outscored CU's for just the second time this season, 29-17….Rebounds were even on the night with both teams snagging 45…The 45 rebounds marked a season-high for the Buffs (42, Texas Southern)…Hollingshed played 36 minutes, moving her past Lisa Van Goor for 15th all-time (3,271).

A couple of thoughts -

• Hopefully both Jones and Sadler will be back soon. Last night 8 of the 9 healthy players saw all the playing time, Kennedy Taylor was the one that did not get on the court. With UCLA tomorrow the Buffs could be stretched especially if there are a player or two with foul issues or injuries.

* It was great to see Friedmann hit three treys and seem to get her scoring groove back.

CU had 12 shots blocked last night. Basically every Buff that attempted a shot inside 5 feet or so seemed to get victimized.

Some of the Buffs are not yet at 100% after Covid. As they feel better, they will play better.

Buffs settling for lots of perimeter shots and missing a couple of layups. Their defense is outstanding!

It's close at the end of the 1st quarter- 10-12 UCLA lead.

Buffs were down 7, but score the last 5.

Buffs up 28-25 at the half. Just tremendous team defense! And they have the lead without significant scoring from Hollingshed and Miller.

That was a solid game by CU. They figured a way to win even though Maya started out something like 1-10 from the floor. Fun team to watch.

I'll have to say again that the team as a whole was tremendous defensively today. Players who were struggling to score were very engaged on the defensive end. This includes Mya Hollingshed who was 3-13 from the floor but was very disruptive defensively.

UCLA did a good job defending the Buffs as well. Both teams were able to disrupt the top scorers and keep them off-balance for much of the game. Thus for CU Hollingshed and Miller combined for 3-17 from the floor.

What CU did was create a lot of turnovers and hit free throws. Kudos to Sherrod for consistently hitting her chances, she really improved in this area. She was also hitting treys at key moments and at least twice exploded to the basket for a layup through traffic.
