Games thread- Women's bball scheduled to visit #6 Stanford (Fri., 2/5, 7:00 MT) & Cal (Sunday, 2:00 MT))

The Buffs (6-8, 4-7) hope to head to the Bay for scheduled games this weekend against the #6 Cardinal (15-2, 12-2) and Golden Bears (0-11, 0-8).

I'm happy for Stanford that they're finally going to get to play a home game on campus as opposed to in another county (Santa Cruz), as they have had to do so far this season. And, I'm sure Cal will be excited just to (hopefully) play ANY games this weekend after having their last 5 games postponed due to Covid-19 protocol issues.

Note - As I type this, the Buffs are at #68 in the NCAA NET rankings, while Stanford is #1 and Cal #284.

STANFORD, Calif. — The Colorado women's basketball team hits the road for a pair of contests this weekend. The Buffaloes will start the trip with a rematch against No. 6 Stanford on Friday (7 p.m. MT). CU's weekend will conclude with a visit to California on Sunday (2 p.m. MT).

The Buffs made history last time around against then-No. 1 Stanford, pulling the upset off in overtime, 77-72. The last three contests against the Cardinal have all been decided by a combined 16 points with two of the three games needing overtime.

Colorado (6-8, 4-7 Pac-12) has not been able to reproduce that same kind of magic on the court since beating Stanford. CU has suffered a pair of losses to Arizona State and Oregon State, as well as two postponements since its Jan. 17 win.

After CU's win over Stanford, the team pointed to its preparation as a major contributing factor. CU hasn't gotten the same results since then, but the Buffs are still reliant on the same kind of intensity and focus in preparing for round two with the Cardinal.

"We did learn from the last game [against Stanford] that we had the ultimate preparation," Tuitele added. "We were ready. We need to have that same mindset. Not only for Stanford but for other games as well."

California offers a different kind of challenge for the Buffs. The Golden Bears have not played since their Jan. 15 loss in Boulder. Cal has had its last five games postponed and are still hungry for that first win of the season.

"Cal has had several weeks of just practice," Payne continued. "A team can absolutely transform themselves with just one good week of practice. They haven't played since they last played us, so we don't know what sort of changes they've made."

Friday's game will be televised on the Pac-12 Networks. Mary Murphy and Guy Haberman will have the call for the 7 p.m. MT tip. Sunday's game against California will be live-streamed at CUBuffs.com/WatchWBB.

Both games will be live on the Colorado Radio Network. Carol Callan and Cory Lopez will have the call locally on AM 630 and online at CUBuffs.com/listen.

The Buffs with a FURIOUS comeback effort which featured a 17-0 scoring run, but it falls a little short, and the final score is 54-62.
 
I did not watch the game as I chose volleyball. That was because the game was being shown on tv and I could record it.

Being without Aubrey Knight hurt them.

If reads like if the entire team could have gotten going before the 4th quarter, the outcome might have been different or at least closer.
 
Bad news’s we got our butts kicked for 30 minutes. Good news we fought back hard in the 4th
Better news, we found a really good PG. Finau, is finally getting her opportunity and showing what she can do.

Completely agree on Finau, she played very well.
 
Seems like Coach Payne has them improving as a team.

Teams that don't believe in their coach and their team don't come back from being that far down against quality opponents to make it a game.
 
Sila has not seen a lot of playing time in her career. I think it says a lot about her and the coaches that she is now handling being the point guard like she's been the point guard all season. She has confidence in her play.

It's hurts not having Aubrey Knight available.
 
The Buffs are up BIG at halftime in this one 45-23. The defense has earned a 13-5 turnover advantage and have a 23-2 points off turnover advantage, and the Buffs are shooting 8-10 from 3 and 62% overall from the field.

Keep it up!
 
CU ends up cruising in this one and gets the win 67-52. (Cal scored the last 7 points in "garbage time" to make the score look closer than it actually was.)

Way to go Buffs!!!
 
If Cory and Carol hadn't talked about Frida making 6 for 6 from the 3 point line, she probably wouldn't have missed any. :giggle:

CU is actually better than Cal, but Cal hasn't won a game all season.

BERKELEY, Calif. — It was all Buffaloes by the Bay on Sunday. The Colorado women's basketball team left no doubt at Hass Pavilion, taking care of business 67-52 over the Cal Golden Bears.

Freshman Frida Formann led Colorado with a season-high 25 points. The guard from Denmark let it fly on the afternoon, hitting a season-high six 3-pointers. She finished 9-for-12 from the floor with four assists.

"It felt really good [on the court]," Forman commented. "I've had a lot of up and downs. I'll have a game where I'm lights out and I have a game where I'm not really lights out. It's always nice to have those games. What I'm thinking about is how I can be a little more consistent, but it definitely gives me more confidence. I just got a lot of open looks today and I didn't really get that last game so it was just nice to be able to get those."

TURNING POINT: CU's largest run, 12-0, came in that second-quarter offensive. Cal got within eight, 33-21, and Colorado scored the next 12 points to go up 45-21. Hollingshed scored four points in the run that was also assisted by Formann, Finau and Tayanna Jones.

KEY STATISTICS: CU shot 8-for-10 from long distance in the first half, totaling 24 of its 45 points from deep. CU's 11 3's were the most since hitting 10 at Stanford last season (Jan. 24).

NOTES: Aubrey Knight missed her second consecutive game, giving way to Jones in the starting lineup…Colorado's road losing streak dated back to Feb. 7, 2020…Including neutral site, the streak was 11 games…Formann is the first freshman to reach 20 points since Jaylyn Sherrod put in 21 in CU's overtime loss at Stanford (1/24/20) last season…Her six 3's was one shy of CU's game record (7, last Kennedy Leonard)…Hollingshed now has 1,149 career points, chasing Brittany Wilson (1,194) for 23rd on CU's scoring list…Colorado has now won four straight against Cal.

NEXT UP: Colorado returns home for its final two games at the CU Events Center. The Buffs will host Southern California on Friday (6 p.m. MT) and UCLA on Sunday (1 p.m. MT).
