Before ending the regular season next Saturday in Lubbock, Women's basketball (17-9 overall, 8-7 in Big 12 play) has one additional road game tomorrow before heading back to Boulder Wednesday night for its home finale. 1st off they head to Stillwater to meet the (#24 (AP Media poll) / Receiving Votes (RV) (Coaches' poll)) Oklahoma State Cowgirls (21-5, 11-4) tomorrow (Saturday) afternoon. Then, Wednesday night CU is scheduled to host the Arizona State (ASU) Sun Devils (8-19, 2-13) in what I assume will be senior day for the graduating Buffs. (Tomorrow night will I assume be at minimum a little more emotional night for the Cowgirls, as it's their Senior Day game.)

In the latest NET rankings (as of games played 2/20; available at https://www.ncaa.com/rankings/basketball-women/d1/ncaa-womens-basketball-net-rankings), CU is currently at #62, while OSU is at #24 and ASU #136.

As has been the case for almost all conference games so far this season, both games are scheduled to be streamed on ESPN+ for those with a premium ($) subscription to that service. (Further info and links for media options available near the bottom of this post.)

Go Buffs!!!

From live stats, the team got a couple key players back (Wetta and Garzon), but it wasn't enough as #24 OSU earned the 65-82 win.

Looks like fouls and turnovers hurt big in this one, as Masagayo ended up with 4 fouls and only played 11 minutes (She still managed to score 14) and Garzon fouled out after playing 21, and it was a 28 to 12 FT attempt overall advantage for the Cowgirls. Turnovers were also a big (21-11) CU disadvantage, with points off them being 12-27. Shooting from deep also wasn't helpful, with OSU making 4 more from 3 than CU while shooting 39% vs. CU's 20%.

Overall, still good to see some of the injured back - hope they can stay healthy, get quickly back both into team and individual game flow, and that the 2 key players still missing (Formann and Smith) can make an appearance before the end of the season. Also, always good to have more quality options, with sophomore Johnson producing big today coming off the bench to lead the team with 20 points in just 15 minutes on very good (7-9 from the field and 6-7 from the line) shooting.

I watched the entire game. It was not pretty. We were no match for Okie State.

Okie State is a much better team than CU.

For me, the best part of the game was seeing Buffs alum Mandy NIghtingale and Jackie McFarland at the game.

I don't think we are on the bubble for the Dance. Those hopes are gone. Will JR and team accept a WNIT bid if the team still has so many injuries?

Buffs Set for Senior Day Matchup with Arizona State

Six seniors to play final regular-season home game

By: Seth Pringle, Athletic Communications

BOULDER –
The Colorado women's basketball team is set to host Arizona State in its regular-season home finale on Wednesday. The Buffaloes will send off its six seniors in a ceremony following the game's conclusion.

Johanna Teder, Nyamer Diew, Lior Garzon, Sara-Rose Smith, Kindyll Wetta and Frida Formann will all participate in Senior Day.
...

Colorado (17-10, 8-8 Big 12) sits tied for eighth in the Big 12 standings with just two games left in the regular season. CU holds the head-to-head tiebreaker against Arizona, claiming the final first-round bye in next week's Big 12 Tournament in Kansas City.

Arizona State (9-19, 3-13 Big 12) snapped a 12-game losing streak last time out with an 85-73 overtime win at BYU. It marked the team's first win since Jan. 4 at Houston.

Wednesday's game will be the first meeting between the Buffs and Sun Devils in Boulder since the 2019-20 season. The two teams were scheduled to play at the CU Events Center in the 2022-23 season, but Arizona State was forced to forfeit the contest due to not having enough available players to compete.

Colorado is 14-16 all-time against ASU but has won the last two contests (forfeit not included) and is 7-7 all-time in Boulder.

Thad Anderson and former Buffs Kami Carmann Snyder will have the call on ESPN+.

Cory Lopez and Carol Callan will have pregame coverage starting 30 minutes before tip-off on the Colorado Radio Network.

Also, the team had its annual award banquet last night (Awardees listed on last image in the below post) -

A little over an hour away from the opening tip-off. (As noted in the article I quoted above, looks like they're doing their senior day ceremony AFTER the game.)

The 2nd quarter looks to have been very similar to the 1st (at least score-wise), with CU scoring the last 7 again to take a 41-20 lead into halftime.

Buffs Run Away from ASU in Senior Night Win

Colorado sends seniors off with a 35-point win

By: Seth Pringle, Athletic Communications

BOULDER –
The Colorado seniors showed up in a big way on Senior Night at CU Events Center, sending the group of six off the floor with an 89-54 win in Wednesday's regular-season home finale.

Graduate transfer Lior Garzon led all players in points and rebounds in her senior send-off. She closed the night with 17 points and a season-high eight rebounds after a scoreless first quarter.

"My mom was like, 'You have no other option,'" Garzon said after the win. "I was like, 'I have to go out and do something.' But no, I mean, it's great. It's a great feeling, and it's always good to play well, but honestly, the win is what matters today because we know we need it. We knew we needed to win today. It was great."

Kindyll Wetta, the lone Colorado native for CU, matched her season-high with 12 points and handed out six assists, finishing a game-best plus-30 in her 25 minutes. The four-year Buff passed 450 career assists, closing the night at 455.

"It's meant everything," Wetta said of her time as a Buffs. "I could not have asked for a better four years here. Getting to come and play in front of my family every night and play with the best teammates, the best coaches, and the best fans has been an incredible four years."

The biggest moment of the night came with just over a minute remaining in the contest when Frida Formann and Sara-Rose Smith subbed into the game to a standing ovation from Buff Nation. Formann has missed the last 12 games, while Smith has been out the last five, both sidelined with injuries.

"Those two [Formann and Smith] have sacrificed a lot for this program and have done everything they can to battle through injury and pain. They want to be out there more than anything in the world. Hopefully, they will be, maybe just not on this court. But it was really special to get them out there on the floor with their teammates."

Johanna Teder and Nyamer Diew rounded out the six departing seniors. Teder went 4-for-9 from the floor with 10 points, while Diew wrapped up her night with six points on 2-of-4 shooting from 3-point range.

The Buffs took control in the first quarter and led for all but five minutes. The CU lead hit 45 in the fourth quarter as the Buffs improved to 18-10 overall and 9-8 in the Big 12. The 35-point spread is the largest conference win by the Buffs since recording a 43-point win over Arizona on Jan. 20, 2013.

The win moves Colorado back into the eighth seed in the Big 12 Tournament with one final regular season game to be played.

Arizona State (9-20, 3-14 Big 12) was led by Jalyn Brown's 17 points.
...

Payne and the Buffs emptied the bench in the final 10 minutes, with all 12 players getting on the court. Diew's second 3 of the night put the Buffs up 45, 82-37, before the team left off the gas the rest of the way.

"I'll take a 35-point win any night," Payne exclaimed. "I think our preparation and our response after Oklahoma State was really good. I think [assistant coach] Matt [Hower] did a great job on the scouting report going into the game today. So again, I think we were really prepared and confident, and we did what we needed to do to be successful."

UP NEXT
Colorado concludes the regular season with a visit to Texas Tech on Saturday (1 p.m. MT).

NOTES
Colorado improves to 14-16 all-time against Arizona State and has won the last three meetings…CU recorded its ninth game with 40 or more points in the paint this season (44)…The Buffs had their 12th game with at least 30 points off the bench this season (35)…CU scored 21 points off of 14 ASU turnovers…Wetta tied De Celle Thomas for 11th all-time in CU history with 226 career steals…Ayianna Johnson finished with 10 points and has now scored double-figures in back-to-back games for the first time this season…Grace Oliver handed out a season-high six assists...The Buffs finish the regular season 14-2 at home.

QUOTES
Head Coach JR Payne
On Wette and Formann's impact at CU –
"The cool thing about those two in particular is as great as they've been on the court, that you could argue that they've been even better in the classroom. They have two of the highest GPAs in the entire university in very difficult academic areas, so we've just continued to be really proud of the amount of work that they put in. They're also two of the hardest working people you probably ever meet, which is why they excel so much in all areas of their lives. As I said on the court, they've had such a big impact on the people in this community, and I know it'll be an impact that's felt forever."

Box score - https://cubuffs.com/sports/womens-basketball/stats/2024-25/arizona-state/boxscore/17297

Feels like a team that could've done much better without the darn injury bug. Impressed by JR again. Really sad for Threeda to come back and rarely play
It definitely does. Both Frida and Sara-Rose had skills that were missed, especially Frida and her shooting.

I attended two away games during Frida's time at CU. At Marquette and at Iowa City. Frida's dad had come from Denmark for each of those games. The man and her entire family have totally supported her.

Senior Night is always mixed emotions and this is no different for me.
