Women's basketball (5-1) has its 2nd of 2 road games it will face this whole offseason this Wednesday afternoon as they head to St. George, Utah to face the Utah Tech Trailblazers (UT, 3-3). They then come back home for 2 - 1st playing in what has been billed since season's schedule was announced as it's headline non-conference game, a Saturday matinee against the #24 Louisville Cardinals (4-2). Then they face off against another Tech, this time the Tennessee Tech Golden Eagle (TTU, 4-2), on Tuesday MORNING.

Of course, it's probably totally worthless given changes to every team, but in what looks like the final NET rankings (dated 4/7/24) for last season, CU ended at #15, UT #202, Louisville #24 and TTU #224.

All 3 games are scheduled to be streamed on ESPN+ for those with a subscription to that paid subscription service. (Further info and links for media options available near the bottom of this post.)

Game day!
(The below has the UT nickname as the Bison, but at least from Google, it is the Trailblazers, although Google does say they have a bison (Brooks the bison) mascot. Not sure if I'm right or the below is?)

Why on earth are we traveling to Utah Tech?
This is not like football and especially with these sports you see it more often. I wonder if it was part of a package put together to make up for losing the Tenn game this year.

sloppy game. Defense was not on point as they gave up way to many 3pt buckets. Team has a long way to go. Not really looking forward to the big 12 this year.

Just going off live stats, looks like the Buffs came out STRONG and had a 22-7 lead within the 1st 6-1/2 minutes of play. After that, it tightened up a lot so that the game was still in question for a long time, with the Blazers having the lead down to 6 (73-67) as late as around 5-1/2 minutes left in the game. CU then upped their game again late to get the win 85-73.

Way to go Buffs!

Smith's Career-Day Leads Buffs Past Trailblazers

Colorado picks up its fourth straight win

By: Seth Pringle, Athletic Communications

ST. GEORGE, Utah –
Colorado fifth-year guard Sara-Rose Smith poured in a career-high 21 points and secured her first double-double of the season with 10 rebounds in the Buffaloes' 85-73 win at Utah Tech on Wednesday.

The second-year Buff was one of four players to finish in double figures. Grad transfer Lior Garzon, who scored a career-high 28 points against Utah State, followed up with a 19-point afternoon. Jade Masogayo registered 13 points, and Frida Formann rounded things out with 10.

"I don't want to say it was luck because that's what we work on," said Smith, who went 3-for-4 from 3-point range. "We're putting up shots all week. When you're working on that part of your game, you hope that they start dropping. I guess I was just feeling it a little bit."

Colorado (6-1) has now won its last four games by double-digit spreads. The Buffs hit 10 3-pointers at Utah Tech, matching its season-high of 10 last time out against Utah State. Colorado has hit 39 triples over the last four games, averaging almost 10 per contest.

The Buffs opened the afternoon with a 30-point first quarter, marking the team's highest-scoring quarter of the season. The Buffs built a 15-point lead in the quarter and led by nine after the first. The game settled back down after the furious pace in the first 10 minutes and was a three-point game throughout the remaining three quarters.

"I'm sure it [the first quarter] was entertaining, but I did not like it," head coach JR Payne explained about controlling the pace of play. "You kind of feel like you don't really have much control of what's happening. I love how we were shooting with confidence and we were making shots. All of that was awesome. But when we start to get tired, we really drop pretty significantly. It's just learning. We have to recognize when a couple of our players are tied on the floor. Maybe there's a sub at the table, but we don't get a stop in play for a minute and a half. We can't just keep racing for those 90 seconds. Recognize that we're tired. Let's slow down. Let's call something and execute it. I think I can help our point guards do well there."

The Colorado bench was quiet by this season's standards. The Buffs had five players come in in relief, combining for a season-low 14 points. Ny Diew led the bench corps with eight points.

Utah Tech (3-4) had four players in double figures. Aaliyah Ibarra led the Trailblazers with 15 points off the bench. Tech, who ranked fifth in the NCAA with 11.5 3-pointers per game to start Wednesday, finished just 9-for-25.
...

Up next
The Buffs kick off a season-long five-game homestand on Saturday, hosting No. 24 Louisville at 1 p.m. MT.

Notes
Smith's double-double was the eighth of her career and second at CU…Formann made her first start of the season and the 106th of her career…Wetta had eight assists on Wednesday, giving her five or more in five games this season…Smith's 10 rebounds give her 464 in her career…CU scored a season-high 40 points in the paint and has now scored 30 or more in the paint each game this season...The Buffs improved to 2-0 all-time against Utah Tech…The win was No. 149 for Coach Payne at CU.

Quotes
Head Coach JR Payne

On getting better – "There's so many things that we're going to continue to improve. The important thing is to study it and then improve it. That's the whole point of the preseason to continue to get better and better and just be real honest with ourselves about where we need to improve. What can we actually attack and get better and then do that."

On the team's depth – "I think we can utilize our depth more than we did today. I don't think we need too many games where we have three or four people close to 30 minutes. Just another area to continue to improve."

On Louisville on Saturday – "I think the biggest difference is they're really athletic at every position. We've seen athleticism but haven't seen 6-2, big, strong, athletic yet. I'm more comfortable playing teams like a Louisville or a Kansas with just bigger bodies that are a little more similar because it's hard to play five guards and chase them around the 3-point line. We'll be excited, though, to match up with them."

On returning to the Southern Utah area – "The athletic director here [at Utah Tech] was the AD that hired me at Southern Utah and gave me my first opportunity. I love this area. I love teams like this, because we were that team that was going to be tough and gritty and play as hard as they can for 40 minutes. I appreciate and value those types of basketball players."

Our defense is not very good. The scout according to the radio announcers was Utah Tech was they shoot a lot of 3's. So many times, the 3 point shot was not guarded.

JR coaches teams have never done well in defending the 3, imo.

On the one hand, it's something to work on in what amounts to a glorified scrimmage, but you'd like to see them work on that specifically.

The team didn't do well defending the 3 against Utah State and that was supposed to be the area of emphasis according to Carol Callan. I really enjoy her knowledge. After the first 3 UT shot, Carol said that is what they were supposed to be defending and there was nobody there.

Colorado Takes on No. 24 Louisville: Five Things to Know

The Buffs host the Cardinals to start the five-game homestand

By: Seth Pringle, Athletic Communications

BOULDER –
The Colorado women's basketball team returns home on Saturday, opening its season-long five-game homestand against No. 24 Louisville. The Buffaloes' homestand will keep the team at home throughout December.

Colorado (6-1) has won four straight contests and is coming off an 85-73 win over Utah Tech. Sara-Rose Smith scored a career-high 21 points and added 10 rebounds for her first double-double of the season. The Buffs had four players in double figures for the first time this season.

Louisville (4-2) has won its last two games entering Saturday. The Cardinals opened the season ranked No. 17 but have dropped two games against then No. 5 UCLA and then No. 20 Kentucky early in the season. Louisville has nine newcomers this
season, including eight true freshmen. Their freshman class was ranked No. 6 by ESPN.

The Buffs and Cardinals have met twice previously, and the series is split at one game apiece. Louisville won the last meeting in 2013, while Colorado won the first meeting in Boulder in 2012.

Five Things to Know
  1. November Success – Colorado is 52-5 in the month of November under head coach JR Payne
  2. JR 150 – Colorado's next win will be No. 150 for Coach Payne at CU
  3. Long Range – Colorado has shot 39.2% (38-97) from 3-point range since going 0-for-17 at Boise State. The Buffs have had games of 9, 9, 10, 10 3FGM in its last four games.
  4. SRS9 – Sara-Rose Smith registered career-highs in points (21) and FGM (10) at Utah Tech. She recorded her second double-double as a Buff (10 reb) and the eighth of her career.
  5. Back in the Five – Frida Formann made her first start of the season at Utah Tech. She scored 10 points in her return to the starting five. It was the 105th start of her career.
Thad Anderson and former Buff Kami Carmann Snyder will have the call on ESPN+.

Cory Lopez and Carol Callan will have pregame coverage starting 30 minutes before tip-off on the Colorado Radio Network.

Up Next: Dec. 3 Tennessee Tech (11 a.m. MT)

After a slow 1st, Louisville's offense was VERY effective in the 2nd. Thankfully the Buffs were able to do enough on their offensive end to keep it close.

It's 33-35 Cards at the half.

Exciting game, with Louisville taking a 1 point lead (55-46) into the final quarter.

A very rough turnover stretch in rhe middle of the 4th, at least 3 of which led to easy lay-ups, dooms CU as Louisville earns the 79-69 win.

Still positive to see the Buffs VERY competitive against a team that is as good if not better than almost all squads they will face in conference.

The games are on ESPN+

25 turnovers and so many offensive boards by Louisville does not win basketball games.

At least it was close.

The score ended up being 79-71, so we only lost by 8 points. Frida was being Frida and Wetta did her thing. They need consistent help from their teammates

Buffs Back in Action Against TTU: Five Things to Know

Colorado continues the homestand on Tuesday against Tennessee Tech

By: Seth Pringle, Athletic Communications

BOULDER –
The Colorado women's basketball team continues its season-long five-game homestand on Tuesday. The Buffaloes will tip off against Tennessee Tech at 11 a.m. MT for the team's annual Field Trip Day.

Tuesday will be the first meeting between the Buffs and the Golden Eagles.

Colorado (6-2) dropped a tough battle against No. 24 Louisville on Saturday. Frida Formann led all players with 25 points. The Buffs led by as many as eight early on, but an unfortunate span in the fourth quarter allowed the Cardinals to go on an extended run, putting the Buffs behind by double-figures.

Tennessee Tech (5-2) won its first four games to start the season before falling to Middle Tennessee and East Tennessee State in consecutive games. The Golden Eagles bounced back with a 79-65 win over Samford last Tuesday. Peyton Carter scored 20 points in the win.

Five Things to Know
  1. Triple Threat – The Buffs have three players averaging double-figures this season. Frida Formann leads the team with 14.8 points in her four games. Lior Garzon (12.3) and Jade Masogayo (11.9) are also in double figures for the season.
  2. Wetta Performance! Kindylle Wetta handed out 10 assists against Louisville. Her assist total is tied nationally for the most against a ranked team so far this season. She now has two career double-figure assist games, opening the season with a 10-assist performance against Northern Colorado.
  3. Top Quarter – Colorado has scored 158 points in the third quarter this season, averaging 19.8 points per game. The team is +39 in the third quarter this season, holding opponents to 119 points (14.9 per game). The Buffs are +42 (121-79) in the third quarter in their six wins this season.
  4. NET – The NCAA released its first NET rankings on Dec. 1. Colorado is 79th. The Big 12 has four teams in the top 30 (TCU 5, West Virginia 10, Kansas State 11, Baylor 26).
  5. Creeping up the Charts – Frida Formann moved into 17th in CU history with 1,384 career points, passing Diane Hiemstra (1,376) with her 25-point performance on Saturday. She is two points shy from tying Mandy Nightingale for 16th and 15 from matching Jenny Roulier (1,399) for 15th.

Thad Anderson and former Buff Kami Carmann Snyder will have the call on ESPN+.

Cory Lopez and Carol Callan will have pregame coverage starting 30 minutes before tip-off on the Colorado Radio Network.

Up Next: Dec. 7 Southern Utah (1 p.m. MT)

I don't understand why games on a weekday are played in the afternoon. I'm sure they are bringing in a bunch of kids or something.

LOTS of offense in this one so far finds the Buffs up 52-39 at the half after a 31-14 2nd quarter.

CU gets the win 91-79.

Way to go Buffs!

(Purely off the live stats, with both teams hot from 3, looks like the difference was CU's work inside, where they held a big 20 point advantage in the paint (46-26), which overcame the turnover disadvantage (11-15 and a 10 points off turnover disadvantage). If I was there, I'd assume I would have been groaning about the officiating, as in spite of all the work in the paint CU ended up with an 8-14 disadvantage in free throw attempts, and I believe CU only had 4 attempts through the 3rd quarter.)

Buffs Ground Golden Eagles in Payne’s 150th win at CU

Colorado hits 90 points for the second time this season

By: Seth Pringle, Athletic Communications

BOULDER –
Colorado head coach JR Payne became the second bench boss in program history to reach 150 career wins in Boulder as her team dismissed Tennessee Teach, 91-79, in front of 2,734 fans at the CU Events Center Tuesday afternoon.

"We've had a tremendous amount of great players come through here, long before I was here, and ever since I've arrived," Payne said about the milestone win. "I had no idea it was 150 wins. That's clearly a testament to the great players we've had through our program. That's really cool for the program."

11 of the 12 Buffaloes who got on the floor on Tuesday contributed points. Nyamer Diew and Ayianna Johnson paced Colorado, each with a season-high 15 points. Diew went 6-for-9 from the field and 3-for-4 from behind the arc, while Johnson closed 7-for-9 in her 12 minutes. The Buffs, as a team, had their shooting numbers of the season, closing the day at 57.1% from the field.

"I thought the offense was phenomenal tonight," Payne continued. "In an early time out, I said to these guys, 'If we keep executing and doing what we're supposed to do, we can get any shot we want.' And I think the percentages show good offense overall and great balance. We were clicking offensively, so I'm proud of how we fixed up the turnovers a little bit from the last game and the defensive rebounding. Those were two areas we had to improve, and we did that today. A lot of good things."

Colorado (7-2) bounced back from its first home loss of the season with its second 90-point effort. The Buffs took control of the afternoon with a 31-point second quarter and held on in the second half to preserve the victory.

Tennessee Tech (5-3) outscored CU 40-39 in the second half. The Golden Eagles were led by Reghan Grimes, who had a game-high 25 points. TTU used the 3-point ball to its advantage, especially early on, hitting 13-of-24 for the game.

Nearly all of the CU Events Center crowd comprised elementary school-aged fans as a part of the team's annual Field Trip Day. The energetic crowd made its presence felt late in the game, encouraging the Buffs to the finish.

"I love these games," Diew said after the win. "Personally, I love the kids screaming. It brings energy, especially at 11 a.m. Having these kids out here made me really glad, and I loved them."
...

"One thing, we're pretty healthy," Payne noted about the team's offense. "Knock on wood, getting Frida back was a big asset because she's such a deep threat and such a consistent scorer. We have so many new players who can do so many different things. AJ [Johnson] and Ny [Diew] led us in scoring today. It could be Grace the next night. It could be Lior [Garzon], it could be Frida, it could be Kindyll [Wetta]. You can pretty much go down the entire roster, and I think that balance is great. We just have to continue. It's better, but there are still areas we can be even better offensively. So as coaches, we tend to prioritize and focus on those."

The Colorado lead hit 21, 66-45, with another 3-ball from Sanders midway through the third quarter, and the Buffs seemed on their way to a blowout win.

TTU had other ideas and closed the third quarter on a 17-9 run that cut the CU lead back down to 75-62 at the end of the quarter.

"Everything can be better," Payne expressed. "There are so many great things that we did, but I think we'll watch the film and go, we can be even better. We can be even more organized. We can have even more people on the offensive glass. We're going in the right direction and improving, but we can keep getting better for sure."

The Golden Eagles climbed back to within six points, 78-72, with just over six and a half minutes remaining. The Buffs dug in for the final stretch, getting a key 3 to fall from Diew that sparked a 7-0 run to put the Buffs up 85-72 with 5:05 to play.

The CU lead didn't dip below double figures the rest of the way.

Up Next
Colorado continues at home on Saturday, taking on Southern Utah at 1 p.m. MT.

Notes
Payne holds a 150-105 (.588) record at CU…Lior Garzon scored seven points, putting her over the century mark at CU (105)…Jade Masogayo also surpassed 100 points at CU with nine on Tuesday (104)…Formann closed with 14 points, jumping her into 16th all-time with 1,398 career points…Oliver led the team with a season-high seven rebounds…The Buffs have scored 90+ points seven times in the last two seasons (5 in 2023-24)…CU's 31 points in the second quarter was its highest-scoring quarter of the season…Colorado had a season-high 54 points off the bench, its most since hitting 54 against Le Moyne last season...Tuesday was the first meeting between Colorado and Tennessee Tech.
