Waikoloa Kings Course

WAIKOLOA, Hawai'i — The University of Colorado men's golf team opened the spring portion of its season here Thursday, finishing tied for 14th place after the first round of the 29th annual Hawai'i-Hilo Amer Ari Invitational. No. 2 Georgia Tech and No. 10 Texas share the individual lead, both recording 14-under par 274 team scores; the Longhorns round was bolstered by five eagles, three coming on the par-5 3rd. No. 17 Arizona State is in third, one back at 275, with No. 44 Oklahoma State (276) and No. 3 Texas Tech (278) rounding out the top five. The Buffaloes turned in an even-par 288 score, as the five designated scorers didn't post any big numbers, either for the round (all between 70 and 75) or on individual holes. They collectively had 18 birdies, 51 pars and 21 bogeys. Sophomore John Paterson led the CU attack with a 2-under 70, which has him tied for 28th place. He had a very steady first time around the 7,074-yard, par-72 Waikoloa's King's Course, recording three birdies and 14 pars with just one bogey. All his birdies came in the first seven holes and he closed his round with eight straight pars. He played the par-3's at 1-under, tied for fifth in the field, while his 14 pars were tied for third. Junior Cole Krantz carded an even-par 72, tying him for 51st individually. He had a team-high five birdies with eight pars and was within one stroke of par after each hole throughout his round. Senior Ross Macdonald and redshirt freshman Adam Matteson are tied for 63rd after firing 1-over 73s. They had similar rounds, with Macdonald scoring three birdies and 11 pars while Matteson had four and nine, respectively. Senior Daniel O'Loughlin had an uncharacteristic 3-over 75 to open up the spring; he had three birdies and nine pars against six bogeys as he is tied for 92nd. He's coming off the fall where he owned a 70.43 stroke average, the lowest for a fall season in school history. It also marked the first time O'Loughlin's score did not count toward CU's team total since April 2017, a span of 54 rounds over 18 tournaments. He had just set the record in the final round of CU's last team tournament, its own Mark Simpson Invitational; Jeremy Paul had the old mark of 53 set in 19 events over the 2014-15 and 2015-16 seasons.
