Goodbye MWC, Conference USA: New Conference Emerging

It will be interesting to see if anyone is left out in the cold. The WAC only has like 5 teams now, will they do some poaching or fall into the mix somewhere?

The newly named league would have a membership in 2013-14 of: UNLV, New Mexico, Wyoming, Colorado State and Air Force, Hawaii (in football only), Southern Miss, Tulsa, Marshall, Rice, UTEP, UAB, Tulane and East Carolina.

14 teams. They'll poach from the WAC and/or Sun Belt if the 16-team superconferences become a reality.

This really is making lemonade from lemons, though. Not too many interesting matchups.

CSu better hope a new television deal is included, or some of their new found stadium money will need to be used to pay for the increased travel costs.

They shall be known as: "The Mountain Conference West USA Conference Association of Schools Stretching from Carolina to Hawaii" or the MCWUSACASSCH for short.

At least they're taking the initiative to solidify themselves as the second tier rather than waiting for the inevitable.

Wonder if they'll make some by-law changes to pull up some of the better DII teams to form a bigger league and get their playoff experience.

Just another step in consolidation of college athletics, as the have-nots seek safety in numbers. Hopefully five years from now, there will be 64 schools in the elite division, with each conference having its own monster tv deal, albeit fairly uniform across the 64. And hopefully, a 4-team playoff while still preserving the regular season (I don't want any team sitting players or quarterbacks because they are in the top 8-16, like in the NFL, moreover, if you lose twice you don't deserve the shot at a national championship: you should have simply won your games.).
Hard to believe Larry Scott started all this and CU got in on the ground floor.

Run Ralphie.

How is this "new association" different than a merger? Sounds like semantics.

It allows new by-laws and flexibility on existing contracts, which teams to take or leave out, etc.

Look at what happened when the Big 12 was formed as a new association instead of a Big 8 expansion. The impact was much more than a semantic consideration.

This is going to be expensive as hell for the non-revenue sports.

thank God for that faithful day back in Feb 2000

gulp I could have been a toothless rammie

Would Fresneck and Nevada be joining after 2013-14? They're supposed to be joining the MWAC at some point IIRC...

Is it just me or does this look a lot like the old WAC that imploded into the current MWC? Maybe not exactly, but the WAC tried to go super conference on a Sun Belt budget a while back and that didn't quite work out...

Wow, a position coach from UT-Juarez? I fear McElwain may have jumped at the wrong HC gig....

How long before AFA takes a look at that conference and asks the Big Everywhere for a second chance to join?

Are they positive or negative on this?

Do they see it as a sign that the Big 12 invite may not be coming after all?
Well they think that they will be able to fill a 50K stadium with these new teams because Boise does it. And yeah they still think they have a shot at the Big 12, little do they know, they were 12 years late for that train.

I see two things wrong with that statement.
