KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Colorado men’s basketball program faced the nation’s 15th most difficult schedule this season, according to this week’s Sagarin college men’s basketball ratings in USA Today. Before departing the Big 12 Tournament in search of two super-sized recruits, CU coach Jeff Bzdelik told reporters to expect more of the same, regarding scheduling.

This is the way to do it! Now screw getting a scrimmage with UNC and get them on the schedule to.

Can't believe I'm saying this, but the basketball program looks to be in a huge upswing with a quality coach and talented players. We have a great chance to be special next season and I love the approach being taken with making the schedule. The program needs to work with Nike to selling replicas of the gold and silver variations of the jerseys the team wears, and market the program this summer, and the Coors Events Center will be a rocking place come winter time. Fingers crossed that the Big Ten matchup is on the road and near me in Chicago!

I think you gotta love this too:

Yeah. I've heard talk we'll be in the Las Vegas Invitational next December.

Funny how our non-conference schedule turned out to be stronger than I had expected before the season started. Still, there were a couple scheduling mistakes highlighted by putting Colorado Christian on the slate. Bohn and Bzdelik can do a better job next year to inflate our RPI a bit more. The biggest chunk of it is opponents' win % vs D1 teams, so we need to get a couple games against programs like Denver and Northern Colorado (19-13 and 23-7, respectively, but pretty certain wins).

Maybe more certain against DU than UNC. Boyle has them playing well right now. They're most talented player red-shirted this season, and they're getting the bulk of their team back again. That'd be a dog fight, and a game we'd better see next season. I'll be pissed if we are playing CC again and not UNC.

Bzdelik isn't stupid. He knows that this is our window to reach the tournament. With Higgins, Relphorde and possibly Burks leaving after this year we have to take advantage. I know that the SEC game that BZ is talking about is Georgia. Hope we schedule a good big 10 team

I wouldn't be surprised if the Big Ten team is Minnesota, since we just scheduled a home/home with them in football. These negotiations tend to spread across sports.

If we can get some effective bigs, the tourney might be a possibility. Maybe we can at least be a bubble team. I hope he does schedule some big games, ask Va Tech how important SOS is.

we could use a little payback against UGA. that was a crushing loss when they were at the CEC in the early 00's.

i'm pretty sure that series either got axed or pushed back quite amount of time.

Buffzone article (Daily Camera) had some great preliminary 2010-2011 MBB schedule info this morning:

The Buffs will host rival Colorado State and Oregon State will make the return trip to Boulder as part of the Big 12/Pac-10 Hardwood Series next season.

Bzdelik has also scheduled a home game against an SEC team for a nationally televised matchup that will be announced later this year when the date and time are confirmed. The coach is still holding out hope of scheduling a home and home series with North Carolina; it sounds like the ball is in Roy Williams` court on that one.

CU also plans to play in the Las Vegas Classic next season in a field expected to include Indiana, New Mexico and Northern Iowa. The Buffs have manageable return trips at Harvard and San Francisco on the docket.

In Big 12 play vs. South Division teams, CU will play host Oklahoma State, Texas and Texas A&M and will play at Baylor, Oklahoma and Texas Tech. The Buffs will obviously have home and homes with Iowa State, Kansas, Kansas State, Missouri and Nebraska.

Ryan Thorburn really does a nice job covering Buff hoops, imo.

And this schedule has me fired up already. When can I renew my season tix?

Sweet USF. I was at the game where they beat Gonzaga this year. That gym is like a high school gym.

Yup. VT is not in the tournament because of their SOS plus the fact that they didn't beat any of the top teams they played. Our sights are set on the NCAA tournament next year, and as we've heard over the past 2 days SOS is a huge factor. You can't just count on a good record in your conference as being enough because of the unbalanced conference schedules that teams now play.

it's pretty much an annual event to see Seth Greenberg on TV moaning about why they didn't get in. even when he was at South Florida.

I just hope that the Tar Heels have the balls to step up and play us instead of ducking us.

At least we don't have to listen to Boeheim whine about expanding the field.

Hey, leave Boeheim alone! And he gave his speech about expansion this morning. :smile2:

Go 'Cuse!!!!!

LET'S GO HOYAS!!!!!

I actually like Boeheim and the 'Cuse, but I've never rolled my eyes than more when he was crying foul when the 'Cuse were left out of the tourney a couple years back.

Yea I think it was '07 where they didn't really have a good case, but in '08 they had as good a case as some of the last few teams that got in.

I'll be pulling for all the Big East teams - except for ND, of course.

Should we play anything close to the 15th toughest schedule like they did this year. Of course, one reason it was 15th toughest was because of conference play. I wonder how tough our OOC schedule was rated? I'd say our OOC schedule should be in the 50 range because, by the end of conferenc play, we will be top 25. OTOH, we generate interest, both in fans and recruits, by playing some high profile OOC games, a la Bill McCartney in football. So, I ask you guys, what is the "perfect" balance? I mean, we could play a very weak OOC schedule and still have a very high stength of schedule by the end of the year. So, do we try to pad our wins going into conference with the danger of not being ready for conference? Do we risk a tough OOC schedule with the danger of messing up our final record but the advangage of preparing us to compete in the Big XII? Tough call. I'm all for playing a tough OOC schedule at this point if only to increase visibility and interest in the program. But it could bite us in the arse.

DBT, you definitely pad it a little bit. I'd break it down this way:

You bring in a couple/few cupcake teams like Arkansas-Pine Bluff and Texas Southern to start the year. Those were great scheduling choices because they ended up playing in their conference championship game (APB made the NCAA tourney).

You play in a major tournament. Good exposure and it gets you 3 solid non-conference opponents on your schedule as neutral-site games (very nice for RPI). Also gets you tournament experience.

You play, at most, 3 more heavyweights. In CU's case, any team from a conference that's in the BCS for football would qualify (along with the top few programs in the mid-major conference like the WCC, MVC and A-10).

The rest of your non-conference is made up of middling or lower echelon teams from the mid-major conferences. You'd expect to win these games, but sometimes you lay a stinker (see 2009 CSU game).

With this, you'll end up with about 5 "no way we should lose" games, 5 "we're favorites but the unexpected could happen" games, and 4 "we're even or underdogs" games. You would expect to head into conference play at no worse than 9-5, but see 11 or 12 wins against 2 or 3 losses as a reasonable expectation.

What you never do: schedule D2 teams. They don't count as wins for the RPI, they pull down strength of schedule, and they draw no television or fan interest. We had two on our 2009 schedule.

Our SOS was 29. Playing KU and KSU twice each certainly helped. In addition to the conference schedule, the Maui Invitational also helped our SOS, Gonzaga in particular.

It's on CUBuffs.com, with us going to Minny in '12 and hosting them in '13. Considering we have schedules that go out to '15, I would think that this series has been in the works for awhile.

All I'm saying is that Bohn must have negotiated this timing with Minny's AD already. Many times in these talks, one will say, hey do you want to throw in a basketball game or two?

i'm pretty sure that series either got axed or pushed back quite amount of time.

Bingo, this is the balancing act. For an upstart team like us, we want a good SOS (Top 50), but not an impossible SOS. Of course, the trick for a tournament team is to win all the easy games (you can't afford L's to RPI teams below 100) and steal a few of the really tough games from the RPI Top 25. Though every NCAA committee is different, I think bad losses (Colorado State) outweigh good wins (Baylor), they are not one-for-one.
