Gottlieb on CU/ Bzdelik

From ESPN rumors.

The Big 12 really is becoming Kansas plus 11, even among coaching circles. New Colorado coach Tad Boyle joins fellow KU alum Mark Turgeon as another former Jayhawk-turned head coach in the Big 12. Boyle was stellar at Northern Colorado, but he will have to get more than just talk out of athletic director Mike Bohn (another KU alum) as CU needs the much-promised practice facility and other upgrades in order to be competitive with Boyle at the helm. I've been told that a big reason Bzdelik was so ready to leave Colorado for the NBA or Wake Forest was the lack of commitment from the athletic department to do what was necessary to be successful in Boulder.

Take it for whatever that is worth..

lack of commitment? This was the most commitment to bbal we've seen in a looonnnggg time here.... I guess he could be referring to the admissions department.

Seems like Bull-**** to me they just broke ground on the facilities as promised and on time. Bzdelik a climber he wants to get back to the pro's badly that is why he walked out on AFA for our Job and then bolted for the ACC at the first opportunity. I think Bohn knew that from the start BZ wouldn't be around long and that is part of the reason he was watching UNC at times this year.

edit- didnt think about the admissions angle.

Bzdelik was upset because the administration wouldn't allow him to hire Harvey Grant. Grant doesn't have a college degree, so it was a non-starter.

Bzdelik was upset because admissions wouldn't clear a few JUCOs that Bzdelik wanted (last year and this year) because they didn't have enough college credits that could transfer and still have them meet eligibility requirements (since we don't take D grades or PE credits). Admissions wanted these guys to take additional credits and we lost them over this issue.

Honestly, even though I liked Bzdelik and approved of how he was building the CU program, he was in the wrong. He simply doesn't belong in college basketball. He doesn't like to recruit. He doesn't like to have to deal with the admissions or academics side of things. In general, he doesn't like there being criteria outside his control that affect who he can hire or recruit. He's been looking to go back to the NBA for 3 straight years, but he's a tough hire there since he doesn't like to deal with NBA egos.

I'm at a point where I'm glad Bzdelik is gone. There wasn't a great relationship with Bohn, because Bzdelik was pissy about not getting his way on the above and because Bohn was pissy about Bzdelik shopping his services every offseason. I believe we're better off having a coach who gets along with our AD, is realistic about what it means to coach in college, and has the same goals for the program.

Jeff was pretty frustrated with the admissions 'dept'. I don't think anything will change with Tad.

It won't change, and it doesn't need to. All Boyle has to do is take a look at the job Patton did, and recruit accordingly. He got some good JUCO's over the years(Kenny Price, Jaquay Walls, Lamar Thomas, Julius Ashby), to speak nothing of his high school recruiting. It is possible to build a successful hoops program with the current admission standards.

It's also worth noting that Hawk has got some questionable juco kids in over on the football side of things. You just have sell the program and get kids that really want to be here. If they want to be at CU, they can do the work to get in.

I disagree. I think most CU fans will admit the admission process is flawed.

:yeahthat:

is a dead giveaway that Gottleib doesn't know what the **** he's talking about when it comes to CU hoops. The practice facility is WAY past the point of being "talk"...

Gottleib is a douchebag nough said, I dont like him and probably never will. Admissions are a problem but other schools deal with it and are successful so we should be able to do it here. Also I heard Gottleib likes to steal other peoples credit cards, wonder how he got on at ESPN?

It's obvious to me that we should pattern our admission standards after whoever the current National Champion is. It's obviously worked for them.

Another big piece of the puzzle, which CU doesn't have control of is the TABOR factor. I wish we could offer long term contracts to at least 2 or 3 assistants in each sport. That would really go a long way. Also attendance is pathetic. We are dead least in the Big 12, by a lot.

I would believe it from anyone else, but Gottlieb is a ****ing moron.

That ****ing moron was on Al and D-Mac about 6 weeks ago saying Bzdelik would be gone from CU and Boyle would be our new coach. I guess he's a moron savant.

Blind squirrel, nuts, etc.

He is the last analyst I care to listen to about college basketball.

The same guy that said Duke was so alarmingly unathletic and didnt have much chance when they played the long athletic teams lol. Say hi West Virginia.
