I was waxing nostalgic back to days of yore and the Miracle in Michigan came to mind. I was talking to my son about it, he was 3 at the time, and we replayed it. Then I mentioned that although I thought it was the greatest Hail Mary of all time, the consensus is that the Flutie to Phelan Hail Mary is the greatest. Through my Black & Gold glasses, I call bull****. What say ye?
 
CU-Michigan. Not even close. Those were national championship contenders playing a huge game. Miami and BC were good in 1984, but that game was nowhere near as relevant as CU-Michigan.
 
I think people on here might be a little biased, but that´s just me.

Add this game to the list of the good times when breaks sometimes fell CU's way. It has been way too long.

That's what I thought as well. I think BC was ranked something like #12. I get what Jen's is saying about us not being objective, but I also think the "East Coast" bias is real and comes into play often at many different levels.

This would be a better poll nationally. Not sure anyone here could legitimately find a reason to vote for Flutie.

The only reason I can think of is that it happened 10 years earlier so was already in the national psyche as the greatest Hail Mary ever for a decade before the Miracle happened.
 
Break it down by various factors:

Game location and attendance:

BC played in Miami in front of maybe 70K, mostly 'cane fans
CU played in the big house in front of over 100K, mostly maize and blue fans
Advantage: Colorado

Game conditions:
Miami - rainy, wet and muddy
Ann Arbor - dry and clear
Advantage: BU

Distance required to score; length of pass:
BU was at about mid field and Flutie threw from just their side of the fifty to about 5 yards deep. Pass length about 60 yards.
CU started short of their own 40; Kordell released the pass around the 27 which was tipped at the goal line. Pass length about 73 yards.
Advantage: Colorado

Defense and difficulty of completion:
Miami defenders stopped short and allowed the ball behind them where Phelan caught it for the TD, unopposed.
At least 3 Michigan defenders were in position when the ball was tipped past them to Westbrook who was blanketed by an all-American cornerback.
Advantage: Colorado


You do the math.
 
I thought a number of years ago that some beat writer did a national poll on this subject, and CU came out on top? I know that Kieth Jackson who was calling the game at the time, was later quoted saying he thought it was the best hail mary ever.

the #3 LSU one was better than the Flutie one IMHO
 
The underlying point is that there is most definitely an east coast media bias in sports. It is really irritating.

Flutie's play also has that "Rocky" or "Rudy" appeal of "underdog white guy wins the big one" thing going for it. Majority of the audience eats that **** up.

And it doesn't hurt that the university is in close proximity of espin headquarters.

I've always loved the Bluegrass Miracle. Such a cool play. I was at a wedding right after that happened and talked to a dude that had been in attendance for both the Miracle in Michigan and the Bluegrass Miracle. How wonder how many other can say the same?
