Hawaii practice reports from fans

Ugh. I just threw up kool aid everywhere. I remembered that we probably would have lost to Hawaii last year, at home, if they had mediocre QB play. Then a sinking feeling set in. I really do hope we're better this year.

I like the AllBuffs add on the bottom of the Hawaii board. Nice job, Mods.

These are fans, not NFL scouts. We all see the best in fall camp. Let's see what happens when they hit the field.

I think we lose to the Bows, but then again we lost our opener to Fresno in 2001 and that season turned out okay...

Not to be greedy, but think of how 2001 might have turned out had we won against Fresno in 2001.

If you read their fan season prediction thread most are between 4 and 6 wins with the odd 2 or 3 win fan and one 10 to 11 win nut job. Most are either counting on a Bow loss, or a toss up at best. Only one said they would destroy us.

We would have had Ochs throwing the ball too much and making bad decisions. The staff looked at things again and said, we are a power team with some stud backs, let's run first and pass second. That's what turned our season around. Not letting Ochs decide games. His injury was good for that team as well.

Things that stand out to me from their fan base:

Concern at OL - there seems to be a consistent theme that the starts are the best, and there is a big drop off in the 2nds. Also, it seems Chow ant the OL coach have been at odds with each other in public. They are like the buffs with 3 returning starters, but don't seem to have the depth that we have right now. They have 9 non R-Fr/Fr on the team.
RB - Lakalaka had a decent game against the buffs, with a lot of yards coming in the second half. They have two other support backs that are short but thick.
WR/TE - the theme here is depth. They seem to have lots of guys. The TE seems to be a favorite target, with talk about him getting open quite a bit (not sure if that is a flaw of the defense that we can exploit or the quality of the TE). There are 2 WR that constantly get mentioned, but sometimes they have players who seem to be dropping the ball as well.
QB - Their best option is Wittek. He is a career 50% passer. They do mention quite a few drops, which might make the 50% a real life number. Also the mention that Wittek doesn't move laterally well in the pocket. He is a true pock passer and not a real threat to run. Slow wind up, and quick release.
Concern at DL - Lots of concern from fans here. Looks like they run a 3-4, so the big concern is at the NT. From a size perspective it looks as if they have a few big boys to put in there. One is a freshman, but the measurables are there. The DT/DE position has some issues as one of the starters was on the sideline watching practice. Two of their starting DL from last year did graduate, which is another reason why the DL is such a concern.
LB/DB - The fans seem to be happy with these positions. Lots of depth and they seem to be happy. Interesting thing is that they are praising the WR, but mention the DB's are close by when the WR catch the ball, no real mention of them making plays just that they were right there. They also don't talk a lot about interceptions. They lost two starting LB, and one starting S from last years D.

In one of the last posts a fan made what I thought was an interesting observation. He said Chow was yelling at the team, and trying to get them to focus. He then mentioned that the team didn't have any leaders right now, and that was being driven by the coaches. It will be interesting to see if they develop that on field leadership, or they could end up with a lot of guys playing for themselves on the field.

The Buffs need to make sure they are focused on this one. They can't go 4-0 without being 1-0.

One of our concerns has been at NT with Solis starting.

In one of their post they mentioned that their starting center went down. They aren't very deep, could turn a negative into a positive for us if we can control the middle of the LOS.

In terms of their 4-5 wins predictions that's pretty standard for bad teams. I would guess that if we went back over the past few years and looked at our predictions for the Buffs very few would have been for less than 4-5 wins per season even in the years we really sucked.

I worry about Hawaii only because it is a long road trip for us as a team that hasn't had much success on the road recently. If we play close to our ability we may not dominate on the scoreboard but we control the game and win. If our doubts and a sense of doom settle in then a solid performance by Hawaii could beat us.

Fortunately our HC isn't a guy who had no head coaching or coordinator experience like last time we went there and lost. This staff should be able to get us through any rough moments we have.

HCMM has only lost to Hawaii once as a head coach.

1st year at SJSU: Road L 41-7 (UH's last good season, finished 10-4)
2nd year at SJSU: Home W 28-27 (UH finished 6-7)
3rd year at SJSU: did not play
1st year at CU: did not play
2nd year at CU: Home W 21-12 (UH finished 4-9)
3rd year at CU: Road N/A

OMG! He's never beaten Hawaii on the road! We're [Orr is a child]!

Mod edit: keep this out of the sports forums, please.

@mods. Okay, okay. But I feel as though Nik baited me (no accountability).

Fair game in Junction's Pub and Barzil?

Thank you for taking the hint. We haven't discussed this issue at length yet, but I'm not going to take the time to edit there unless it gets egregious or harmful. We appreciate your discretion in the sports forums.
