Helfrich out at Oregon

I wasn't sure they had the courage to make that move, but it was the right one.

Helfrich is a good dude, he just got put in to a situation he was woefully under prepared for in a desperate effort to maintain continuity.

Absolutely no surprise to Colorado fans. Though selfishly I was hoping they would try to ride it out for another year. Open season on Oregon's recruits. It'll be interesting to see what happens with their recruiting class if they go with a guy without a ton of west coast contacts like Fleck.

I always liked Helfrich when he was here. Damn good OC and QB Coach. Was smart enough to get out, though the timing of that still pisses me off.

I'm not sure he's a HC, though.

maybe a qb coach/ Passing Coordinator when lindgren gets the SJSU job? lol

I snickered the day Oregon hired him as the HC. He did a fine job of not screwing up the Mariota teams which is more than I thought he was capable of. UO was too proud of their "we promote from within" culture and after Kelly left they didn't do the right thing and hire Peterson.

Would not be a shock if Kelley comes back. He isn't getting another gig in the NFL and there aren't a lot of places where he only has to keep one booster happy like Duckland.

Classy statement from Helfrich. If he wants to work next year I doubt he'll have trouble finding work as an OC.

They were in a tough spot, though. Had a National Champion caliber team with the best QB in the nation. Not exactly a good time to change systems. In hindsight, they should have promoted Nick Aliotti to captain the ship for a couple years.

Gundy might be interesting there as well, guy can run an offensive and has unique expertise in dealing with uber-boosters.

He is going to be available at latest at the end of this NFL season and maybe before.

Also my understanding is that the standard NFL head coaching contract provides for an offset against the money still owed if the fired coach takes another NFL job. That doesn't apply to a college job.

If this is the case Chip could do a big time double dip taking a healthy salary from Oregon while still collecting the full amount owed him by San Francisco.

According to Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports, the 49ers made the decision to fire Jim Tomsula after Kelly was let go by Philadelphia. ESPN's Darren Rovell added that Kelly figures to be making at least $12.5 million for each of the next two years between his new deal with San Francisco and what the Eagles still owe him. Paul Gutierrez of ESPN reported Kelly would be getting a four-year, $24 million deal from the team
.

That's a lot of cash he could make adding a salary from Oregon.

I like Fleck at wmu he has energy and personality. He seems like a coach who could do something for a lot of programs.

Are we sure we really want Sparkles at a recently high performing team in our conference? I concur the guy looks like a goober, but all he has done in two stints as an HC is win..,
I think he's perfect. The conference would be stealing a successful coach from SEC! SEC! SEC!, which would amuse me. He's a great coach, so he'd restore credibility to Oregon, which isn't bad, but my hunch (seriously, I can't justify it, so don't ask) is that he has a ceiling.

Also it will be fun watching Florida make a worse hire.
