Historically black fraternity returns to CU

What's notable here is that CU is making an uncharacteristic commitment to support athletics since the drive for years seems to have been to kill the Greek system. Probably sold it internally as a diversity measure, which is valid.

These dudes had a big ol' tailgate set up at the spring game...I definitely noticed because....
Wow! The crazy. In the south, it's a lot different where only PWI Christian schools lack the divine nine presence. Definitely a big win for Greek Life at CU
They had a strong presence at CU until the early/mid 90's. Football players at CU have historically not aligned themselves with the greek culture, but many of the CU greats, back when we were competing for NC's, were members of Omega Psi Phi

Yep. You can see Eric Bieniemy throwing up the Omega after TDs if you pull up a 1990 game on YouTube. Here’s a pic of him doing it with the Chargers.

That's called the Hooks and don't throw that up unless you crossed the burning sands. I still remember Kobe having to get checked for doing it. They see Shaq and MJ do it and think it's a celebration move but it's not

What was the reason behind it leaving CU initially?

I don’t remember the specific issue, but it was in line with the rest of the scandals that have caused other Fraternities to shutter over the years. CU has not been kind to Greek culture over the years, largely due to neighborhood complaints around parties etc….

I was about 10 when EB played here, and I thought it was supposed to be buffalo horns similar to the UT horns up hand gesture.

well, in defense of the school, we didn't exactly behave very well. I wasn't in the house that had the death of the student riding on the top of the car, but I was our fraternity's rep in the Intra-Fraternity Council that year and I was intimately aware of how poorly behaved most houses were.

That was a horrible time and I can understand why the University didn't want to see us as part of the system.

I was the prez of a fraternity with 100+ members (graduated 2017) and really proud to say that our independent IFC separate from the school was significantly safer and more accepting than the stories I heard in the past. We learned from the lack of control in the past and put some bumpers on the proverbial lane

There are always bad things that can happen with that many drunk people but our risk management measures and protocol were surprisingly strong. Significantly safer than any random college party you would normally go to (EMS on site, paid security, sober member rotation, police walkthroughs, fire dept walkthrough, safety trainings with LEO). We actually caught an Air Force cadet who was roofying people at multiple chapters through our guest log system by tracking the incidents across all chapters’ guest logs

Can’t wait to have another brotherhood join the ranks and meet the leaders! Love to have these guys on campus and they’ll make the community stronger. Awesome news!

It was all about hazing and drinking incidents, some of which were fatal. Not neighborhood complaints. Parents were suing the school.

Philly would know more than I know/remember, but there was a time when the frats were pretty out of control. I’m surprised they survived.

It was a female that died... it was a group of fraternity members that drove the car. terrible for all involved. I can't believe that they didn't ban us all then either.

The driver came and spoke at my high school. It was pretty impactful.

I believe that was part of his sentence. IMHO, that is one of the best ways of taking ownership of your behavior. I hope it was impactful for the speaker and the students.
